Newcastle Collapse Late To Suffer 4-1 Defeat At Manchester United

Newcastle put in a valiant effort until collapsing late at Old Trafford. Manchester United found their stride in the second half as The Magpies continue their poor start with a 4-1 defeat. A goal from Javier Manquillo made it interesting for a few minutes but the hosts grabbed three goals in the second half to seal all three points.

Steve Bruce made no changes for the second half after trailing 1-0 at the break. The lads started brightly offering a threat on the counter.

Newcastle found the leveler through an unlikely source in Javier Manquillo in the 56th minute. Almiron started the break with some superb dribbling. He found Saint-Maximin who laid it off for Manquillo in the box. The Spaniard provided an excellent finish for his first goal as a Magpie to make it 1-1.

It took just over 5 minutes for Man United to answer. It was another goal from Ronaldo in which Woodman should have done better. Luke Shaw surged up the pitch playing Ronaldo into the box. He took a touch before firing a shot that went through Woodman’s legs to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

Newcastle came close in the 67th minute. Ritchie received a pass from Joelinton on the left. He played it back to the Brazilian who showed strength to keep upright in the box. His shot was punched over the bar by De Gea for a corner.

Bruce made his first change in the 77th minute. It was an attacking one with Jacob Murphy coming on for Javier Manquillo, who put in an excellent shift down the right flank.

Bruno Fernandes made it 3-1 with a beautiful strike in the 80th minute. It started with a superb kick from De Gea to release Mason Greenwood. He was pushed wide but played it to Pogba who found Fernandes outside the box. Newcastle’s fatigue showed as they failed to close him down resulting in his long-range effort that sailed into the top corner.

Jamal Lewis came on for Ciaran Clark soon after the goal. A few minutes later it was Jeff Hendrick on for Willock. Both changes were straight swaps with Lewis on the left side of that back three and Hendrick into the midfield.

The changes did little to affect the outcome. Newcastle were out of gas and unable to mount any late comeback. Jesse Lingard added a goal in stoppage time to make it another lopsided result.

It was a decent effort for around 75 minutes. However, that is little consolation as we have just 1 point and have conceded 12 goals in our four matches. We now are only above Norwich in table as the slide continues.

Manquillo needs to start. Yes, he does not have the pace that Murphy has but he does push forward and has an excellent footballer brain. More significantly, he understand the defensive structure well and that’s the first area we need to address at the moment.
Agree with previous statements about Woodman. However, he is still very inexperienced at this level and the prospect of facing Manure and Ronald McDonald must have been daunting. In reality, he should be our third choice behind Dubs and Darlow.

NADJ no, if tactics not spot on I think we’ll get more of a humping off Leeds on Friday.

I know we have the number 4 on our shirts but how many times are we going to leak 4?

We now have the highest conceded in the league.

    This season stinks of relegation.

I was only for Woodman starting the season but he has his chance and just like when I last saw him a few years ago I don’t get what the hype was about …not good enough to be a number 1 in the Prem…should of sold him because no doubt now his value will be decreased

TomkaThor Woodman should have been the no2 this season playing cup games and getting his confidence built ready to come in as a No1 if needed. Gillespie should have been a starter till Darlow came back.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but considering that Bruce has such a big “behind” you’d think he’d make some better decisions.

2nd bottom and already -7 goal difference after 4 games of which was considered a somewhat generous start of fixtures for us

Before the home game on the 15th January against Watford I only see 8 points being added to our total, seriously think we will be well adrift at that point and unless Ashley has already acted then it’s too late.

Not going to blame any players, if Bruce ordered the team to play like this. Any player is wasted under Bruce. Just look at Willock.

IMO he’s not up to the premier league!

    My take on today’s result.
    1. Overall it was a good performance, especially first half when we had the better chances.
    2. Conceding in the final minute of each half is poor. We are looking a bit suspect defensively, with not enough closing down of the danger.
    3. Has Woodman actually made a save in his 4 games yet? He’s either rubbish or very unlucky, but I’ve always thought him too lightweight and without presence. Perhaps he just needs to win a game for us, but I’m not convinced.

Never saw him play for Swansea, but with all the plaudits he received I assumed he must have improved. But no, he looks the same keeper we saw in the cups a couple of years ago.

Today’s match at least gave me more hope than the other 3. Manquillo needs to start from now on and Woodman needs dropping.
Bruce needs to go back to Portugal.

When the question was put to Bruce by ChronicleLive, he responded: “Wow… Go on . . . Do you think I really have to answer that to you?

“That’s what the fans are asking are they? We have trained all week and we were in every day.

    “The preparation was meticulous.

“Let me tell you. There is nothing more in preparation…

“What was I supposed to do? We had six of them away.

“The preparation was fine and we have been in all week.

“You could see the game plan was what we worked to.

“To have to answer questions like that is typical to the question I would get off you – and your newspaper.

“If I am being brutally honest.

“That’s why they are the way they are, the way you are and your negativity and your newspaper.”

    Wow 😆

He just has limited cababiities….its the owner.. who….stupidly saw us as a golden goose…..how this person is a multi billionaire is a global mystery.
I think this is a time when big Mike has been, found out…for some reason he’s never been able to seperate the selling of a shirt from one of his tat shops to buying and selling a talented footballer …..he doesn’t do humane

IMO, the season so far, the whole team is very, very low in confidence, team morale does not seem great and not interactive with Manager, coaches etc. The defence which was quite strong a couple of seasons back are now shocking and do not gel at all. Midfield players do not know their role at all, headless chickens comes to mind. Forwards do their best but apart from Wilson lack a lot of quality. We concede far to many simple goals, also Woodman is not very experienced at this level and it is showing unfortunately. It’s going to be a very tough season as we are all aware. Cheers all.

I think the only way we’ll get rid of Bruce is if he has some sort of breakdown. But he doesn’t seem emotionally invested in us enough for things to effect him.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. A bit of promise and 4-1 does not reflect the game.

I was anticipating 5-0 but, to be fair, we were competitive against the current league leaders away from home.

Did we make the fatal mistake on two occassions of not passing to unmarked players who would have scored.

Top teams do that before seeking glory goals.

I think that us Newcastle supporters, expectations have fallen that low over the last decade that we are seem happy just not to be heavily beaten off a top six side or we get a away draw against a bottom eight side ! We are being slowly deflated by the football standards thrown at us by the people who run our club, who do not care one iota ! Things have to change ASAP or we will end up like a Sheffield Wed, Derby or a Sunderland. God help us !!!

TTB, At any other club, that would be the case. Charnley hasn’t proved himself proactive in any department, and he’ll have to spend money to get rid of him (ignorant of the huge cost in keeping him). I suspect he’ll just hope things improve and do nothing until it’s too late.
I only hope Jail’s speculation that maybe there’s a ‘fired with no compo’ clause if we’re bottom 3, is true.
