Places Could Be Up For Grabs As Bruce Tries To Turn The Tide

Newcastle have a massive match against Leeds at St. James’ Park on Friday evening. The problem The Magpies could face is that it is also a very important fixture for Leeds, who likewise have yet to pick up their first win and have had struggled defensively.

According to The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, there was a dressing room inquest held after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Manchester United. Poor defending was the primary topic of discussion.

Newcastle have conceded 12 goals over our first four matches, which is the most in the league so far. While the defending was better against The Red Devils early, it ended in another lopsided defeat with Newcastle just unable to prevent the opposition from hitting the back of the net.

Leeds have struggled at the back as well and share our -7 goal difference. Though they have had a more difficult start to the campaign with matches against Man United, Everton, and Liverpool.

Bruce will have some decisions to make as Lee Ryder suggests places could be up for grabs, especially at the back. We could see both Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez recalled for Friday. Hopefully, Paul Dummett will be available after a calf injury has kept him on the sidelines since pre-season.

Karl Darlow could also get the nod over Freddie Woodman. Bruce may opt for Darlow’s experience after Freddie made a few mistakes on Saturday. He stepped up and accepted responsibility but it’s another area where a change could be made.

The Chronicle is also backing claims from The Athletic that Callum Wilson will not be risked until October with his thigh strain. This means he’ll miss our next two matches with Wolves on October 2nd being a potential date for his return. The Athletic reckon he may not be back until after the next international break ruling him out for the Wolves match as well.

We’ll also have to wait on news of Javier Manquillo, Joe Willock, and Ciaran Clark, who were all forced off with knocks at Old Trafford. Bruce could already be facing an injury crisis early in the campaign.

This season’s start has been calamitous. However, all it takes is a couple of wins to turn our fortunes around. Newcastle really need to find that first win quickly and the match on Friday is of growing importance.

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards is suggesting that Bruce’s position is not currently under threat. He is also calling on fans to not be so vocal in their displeasure with things on the pitch.

That may be wishful thinking as Friday’s match could get very ugly. Especially if Newcastle limp out of the gate like against Southampton. The lads really need a quick and positive start. That should be one of the many focus points in training this week.

Scissor challenge and ref bottles a yellow because it’s early in the game. A yellow’s a yellow

Calvert-Lewyn who has trained this week, not even on the bench, as he’s recovering from a slight muscle strain much like Wilson was.

How do you get a thigh injury after 1 month of playing. For a physical specimen Wilson’s body is just not up to the PL. I’d be amazed if we get 20 games out of him this season. Never mind, the back up is not bad!

Don’t think it was even a card a few seasons back when Kane could have ended Lejeune’s career

and last night an injury from a fair looking tackle earned a red card, with talk of a broken leg, although it appears to have been a very painful dislocation ?

So here we are at yet another watershed moment for the club during Ashley’s tenure. For my money if there is still the possibility of a takeover then we need to do whatever it takes to stay in the PL this season. Which means as fans we need to avoid creating an overly toxic atmosphere, which means full unconditional support inside SJP. But it the takeover is dead in the water then I’d be happy for the fans to rip into Bruce. Why? Because he agreed to work for Ashley. I don’t want any manager taking the job whilst Ashley is there, if he’s not selling. I want it to be the job that no one wants, thereby making it untenable for Ashley to continue to be our owner. But of course we haven’t a clue about the takeover. So what do we do? Lay into the PL? Ashley? Bruce? We love our club so much but have been taken to the brink where we’d be happy to see it completely crash and burn. I blame the PL, Staveley, Ashley, Bruce, all of them. How could they make such a mess of such a great opportunity. They are meant to be experienced business people. And it’s us just left in purgatory. F**k the lot of them!

I know they are making up for some over spending in the last few years but let’s look at how much Everyon spent on their FIVE signings this summer….calculating….calculating…wiat carry the one….oh wait…what….1.7m???? Can’t be right….hmmmmm. We spent about 15 times that and couldn’t sign a free or a loan because we could make a spot available taken by our 4 GKs.

Willoock was our highest rated outfield player. Ignoring the goalkeeper, our lowest ranked outfield player was, unsurprisingly the played out of position Hayden.

After Rafa kept us back up for two seasons, Ashley’s approach finally allowed for money to be spent in the transfer market, but they wouldn’t allow Rafa to have the final say on who came in, so he was lost, and we ended up with Steve Bruce, Joel at 40 million quid, Krafth, St Max, Wilson, Fraser, Hendrick, Lewis, Shelvey, Clark, Ritchie, Gayle and Fede on new deals, and Willock for 25 million.

Am I wrong in thinking if they’d just guranteed Rafa the same transfer budget and the final say on how it was spent, he’d very likely still be here, knowing Staveley and PIF were still in, and we wouldn’t be in this mess, in fact we’d be a solid top ten proposition?

    Ashley just hasn’t a clue.
