Poll – How Will Newcastle Do Against Leeds On Friday?

Friday night at St. James’ Park will host a battle between two of the five clubs looking for their first win of this campaign. Leeds sit in 17th place on 2 points with the same -7 goal difference as Newcastle.

After an extremely disappointing transfer window, Newcastle have limped out of the gate with just one draw over our first four matches. We also bowed out of the Carabao Cup at home to Burnley, who are one of the five winless clubs

There were some positives at Manchester United over the weekend. The defending was much improved until some late goals led to a lopsided defeat. While we probably didn’t deserve a result, the scoreline was a bit harsh.

Miguel Almiron and Javier Manquillo were both excellent on Saturday. Unfortunately, Manquillo was forced off with a knock. Hopefully, it’s a minor one and he can play a part at home on Friday. They duo top our poll as Newcastle’s best players.

This is a prominent match despite it being so early in the season. Steve Bruce is facing increasing scrutiny and with the fans back in the stands, he’s not been able to juke their displeasure.

Injuries have been a running theme under Bruce’s tenure. That is no different this season. Callum Wilson will be out for the foreseeable future with The Mail reporting he could be sidelined until the end of next month.

Wilson joins Martin Dubravka and Jonjo Shelvey as long-term injuries. We’re waiting on news about Manquillo, Joe Willock, and Ciaran Clark, all of who suffered knocks on Saturday. Paul Dummett has yet to play this season with a calf injury but could return Friday.

We could see plenty of changes against Leeds as Bruce desperately tries to jumpstart this campaign. A bright, quick start is a must or it could get very ugly at St. James’ Park.

I 100% agree that some of the football is dire. But Bruce’s number 1 task on his job description is to keep the club in the PL. He does that by setting the team up not to lose and counter attacking with some our pacey players. If that means grinding a draw, that’s a result for Bruce.

That’s not Bruce’s fault. That will be what he’s told to do. Relegation would set us back years.

If I don’t get back on, perhaps someone else can adjudicate.

Bruce has been here 2 seasons and has never felt the wrath of the fans, if we are a shambles and get turned over on Friday and the fans don`t turn on Bruce , it will never happen.
Live on Sky on a Friday night , no other games for other fans to watch so a good tv audience is expected, should be a perfect opportunity to show the nation just how pissed off the fans are with the current regime. Will it happen? Probably a few boos at the end of the game is about the jist of it.

onmeedsun – we haven’t really gone backwards. We’ve been relegated twice and recovered twice. Some clubs have gone past us due to big investments but we just haven’t moved forward.

Name a better player Newcastle have than Hayden to stop Man utd overrunning the midfield? Yet he plays Hayden in CB with Federico on the bench. Nobody expect Newcastle to win Man Utd.

Steve Bruce have a history of being bad. You will have a terrible time defending him.

Turning on Bruce is pointless, thinking you can make the club toxic and force Ashley to sell cheaply is pointless (study Ashley’s history!) If the club get relegated, Ashley will hold onto us for longer because he knows a PL asset is worth much more than a Championship asset and we won’t stay in the Championship for long. Ashley doesn’t sell cheaply, he buys cheaply!

Best thing we can be right now is a stable PL club that (hopefully) doesn’t look like getting relegated and a new owner comes along to bring some fun back to the club.

The fans have been turning up in their numbers for near enough 15 years under Ashley’s ownership they don’t need to keep showing up for a “sale” buyers will be more than aware of the potential of the club if they do their homework

What they will notice is no one in the city is buying the tops or buying the tickets and the fanbase is done with it new owners would have all of them rushing back to be involved

Tyran21 – I try not to be too meticulous in analysing football like that as I have no coaching qualifications nor do I know how the players trained, whether anyone was carrying a knock or whether players were placed in certain positions to counter a specific player in the opposition.

I DO remember Bobby Robson getting all sorts of crap for playing wingers on their opposite sides. I also remember reading people annoyed with players taking short corners…

TDS, to continue my comment from last page.

What I don’t like is there is never a plan or tactics. You can see it clearly in the way we play.

We play counter attacking football and get into some really great situations. But when we get there we don’t score because the players don’t have a clue what they’re supposed to do.

Our players are buying into his negative attitude, constantly belittling us. Their heads are hanging on by a thread, waiting for the slightest thing to go wrong before they drop.

Goodness knows what he says to the youth players who need support and their confidence backed.

Mike Tyson said when he was first being trained by Cus D’Amato that he had no boxing skills, but Cus was constantly shouting and cheering “That’s beautiful, You’re amazing, Fantastic work”. And eventually Mike started to believe him, and the rest is history.

    We can’t compete financially
    We’ve had covid
    We have injuries
    I needed more players
    They have more experience
    They’re fitter than us
    The referee was against us
    Their fans were behind them
    They’re a big big club
    Our target is 17th
We can’t compete in the cups

Negativity from the manager is like a poisonous seed sown into the minds of our squad, fans and pundits. Its bringing us down and this might be the year it sends us to the championship.

This season we have played and failed to beat West Ham, soton and Villa in the league and had burnley knock us out of the cup in our first 5 matches this season. We have conceded 12 goals already in 4 games and have a GD of -7 already.

Bruce deserves the criticism for this.

Id also suggest he deserves criticism for the volume of muscle injuries we have had since he has been here(which have followed him everywhere he has been).

also re setting expectations – we finished 10th, 13th, 13th and 12th in the last 4 seasons, we arent a newly promoted team anymore – should we not aim to improve each season? Therefore 10th/top 10 for eg isnt unrealistic at all imo and should be the clear aim for this season – giving off a defeatist attitude and constantly lowering expectations can rub off onto the players too.

    Positives from the game

    – Very happy to see Manquillo back and glad he took the opportunity
    – Willock one of the top in the league for most tackles (good to see his defensive game get some merit)
    – Almiron having his first good game of the season and showing he and St Max can run a good defence ragged (if only we had a striker in the team and a GK that could save a shot)

Bruce is going to get us relegated this season if it continues the way we are all the teams around us have improved their teams and our players are not organised enough to fluke results like we have did in the last few seasons

There’s really only a few ways out of this either Bruce gets replaced by someone else who know what they are doing

Bruce suddenly becomes a Bielsa, Rafa level with the hard work ethic and attention to detail

Jones takes over all football duties and becomes a new superstar coach

Or we get relegated Sheffield United level from last season which as the games go on looks more likely

These players are all tremendously talented. They’re in the best league in the world.

The difference at that level in sport comes down to what’s inbetween your lugs.

And if your leader, who is supposed to inspire you, is bringing you down, then you’re knackered before you even start.

What’s the phrase that always comes out when a team is destined for relegation? Their heads have dropped. As soon as the players stop believing in a manager then you know that you’re in trouble.

And we know from comments made recently by a few players that they don’t believe I Bruce.

TheTinman – of course the players know what to do! But if Almiron had a final ball then he’d be playing for a top 6 club with his speed. If ASM was clinical with his skill, he’d be playing for a top 6 club and worth £100m too! If Wilson wasn’t injured all the time, the same. Our players are mid table/bottom half players with a few having a chance of pushing forwards and playing for a top 6 club but most are just not good enough for that and never will be.

There’s negativity and there’s realism. Toon fans love to dream and dreaming is pointless with Ashley in charge, it’s just going to be a nightmare if we try…

When Almiron was under Rafas coaching he was being linked with Athletico Madrid. The lad has a problem with his final ball and sadly he has now had to put up with two seasons without coaching.

Gothmog – what comments like your last fail to acknowledge is that there are 19 other clubs in the league! They’re not all remaining static so we just have to improve to gain positions. We actually have to improve in relation to the clubs around is, which is massively difficult! To do that we either need to have a fantastic coach/manager (we do not), invest a lot of money in players (we will not under Ashley), have a crop of amazing youngsters (we don’t have them), or just have a load of luck with all/most top players in the form of their lives (like Leicester had).

We have to keep improving just to remain mid table, that’s the reality. Especially when some clubs invest a load of money (some of which will fail and fade down the leagues).

Gotta get on a work meeting soon. I don’t have the answers but I certainly don’t believe that the negativity helps. Wish more fans would get behind our manager, players and club, boost us up a little and make sure that someone buys Ashley out. I know it’s a big ask to spend so much money, time and emotion for very little return though…but hopefully it will pay off sooner rather than later…

Why on earth would fans get behind a manager who plays down the club and fans consistently? If he actually built a good relationship with the fans, they would be more inclined to get behind him. He has done the total opposite, to expect fans to get behind him is i’m sorry to say, nonsensical.

Don’t like to single out players, but Woodman needs to raise his game. He’s already admitted as much.

In recent seasons, we’ve relied on Dubs and Darlow putting in big performances to earn us points.

Now that Darlow is available, Woodman needs to step up or step aside PDQ.

And you wonder why The Frog insists there is PR on here. “You can’t blame Ashley for not spending money the club hasn’t got”
They’ve released an unsigned statement telling us they’ve spun£ed £160M on Steve Bruce in two seasons and us not buying tickets has affected their spending. We have a manager who has gone out of his way to belittle us at every given opportunity to mask his own failings and to cosy up to his paymasters.
There won’t be protests on Friday not of the organised sort anyway, what will happen is years of pent up anger made a whole lot worse by the admission that they have wasted £160M on Steve Bruce while a guy they chased away has Everton sitting joint top of the league with a minus £4M net spend. TDsarf telling us to get behind Bruce is just another slap in the chops from someone who hasn’t got a footin clue about the club.

Ashley being Ashley can not camourflage what a desperately poor coach Bruce is. Bruce is the guy who said NUFC ”went above and beyond” to get Willock.

If Wilson hadn’t been injured we would have had 55M worth of players on the bench in Joel and lewis.

Bruce is entirely negative. He exudes negativity and misery and that translates to the fans. With Bruce there is always the lowering of expectations, bigging up of the opposition, ie Newport made to sound like playing Barcelona and always especially getting his excuses in early. Not to mention constantly insulting the fans at every club he’s been at.

Bruce was a good player, not a great player but a good one but he’s still dining out on that as his coaching ability is negligible.

The situation is I am afraid totally and wholly negative and Bruce can’t hide behind Ashley as he is the only one apart from mclaren who ashley has backed and he even had the option of Jones being parachuted in to effectively do the job he can’t or won’t, although he did claim to do the defence coaching. Enough said.

Bruce is stealing a living here and everyone knows it.
