Bruce Once Again Finds Himself With An Injury Crisis To Navigate

Steve Bruce has a potential injury crisis on his hands once again. It’s nothing new as muscle injuries have been a constant since the 60-year-old was appointed just over 2 years ago.

The biggest worry is with striker Callum Wilson, who according to various reports could be out anywhere from another week to the end of October. Newcastle could find it difficult to absorb his loss if it ends up being the latter.

Newcastle have the following six fixtures through the end of October:

17 Sept – Leeds (Home)
25 Sept – Watford (Away)
2 Oct – Wolves (Away)
17 Oct – Tottenham (Home)
23 Oct – Crystal Palace (Away)
30 Oct – Chelsea (Home)

The probable scenario for Wilson’s return is the Tottenham match after the second international break. Wilson is so important to this team that Bruce may err on the side of caution. So waiting until after the two-week international break seems to make sense.

That would still mean Wilson misses three critical matches against teams in and around us at the moment. Watford and Wolves have just three points while Leeds are on two heading into Friday’s match.

Martin Dubravka and Jonjo Shelvey are the other two long-term injuries. Dubravka is out until November while Shelvey should be getting close to a return to training. The other unknown is Paul Dummett who has just struggled with fitness over the past few seasons.

The defender was close to a return against Southampton a few weeks ago but reaggravated his calf injury. Hopefully, Dummett is close to being available as he provides another option at the back.

Bruce currently has three 18-year-olds training with the senior squad. Dylan Stephenson was called up this week while Joe White made the bench at Old Trafford. Elliot Anderson is working his way back after missing the entirety of pre-season with a chronic hip problem.

Anderson got a 60 minute run out with the U23s on Monday. A match which both Stephenson and White also started. The lads lost 2-0 at West Brom but getting Anderson some minutes on the pitch is at least one positive to take away.

Bruce is unlikely to rely on any of the youngsters at this stage. Though Anderson could provide an option upfront. However, Bruce went with experience during difficult times last season and probably will do the same barring more injuries in attack.

We’re also waiting on news on Javier Manquillo, Ciaran Clark, and Joe Willock. The three suffered knocks over the weekend forcing their early exits. Hopefully, the news on them is better than what we’ve heard on Callum Wilson.

Bruce also confirmed last week that Ryan Fraser’s ankle injury wasn’t serious. The winger was again injured on international duty but it was later revealed to be just a twisted ankle. We’ll hopefully hear positive news on him and some others during Bruce’s press conference later this week.

The under twenty three players involved in bar brawl, involving friends of Steve Harpers son. Oh dear more bad news for the club.

It was probably just what young lads get up to, but the press could have a field day, the club could well do without things like that happening. Especially when they’ve lost their academy coach after just a few weeks,

I think Bruce walking would be the best option as opposed to Ashley binning him. It would give Bruce some credibility and be a real statement that no self respecting manager should work for this bunch. The focus then stays on Ashley and how he runs the club, or doesn’t. If they sack him the focus will be on Bruce’s inadequacies and not Ashley’s.

The leak about Bruce arguing with Chumley could be a ploy to make fans think Bruce is finally pushing the senior mgt for more so we give him an easier ride.

    Carltoon,

Liam Kennedy was saying the other week (on Steve wraiths show) that the guy who came in to coach in the academy (sorry, I forgot his name) was only ever there short term.
What I mean is that it was understood beforehand that his appointment was only very short term.

Ambani is the guy who notoriously owns and occupies Antilia, ‘a private residence in the billionaires row of Mumbai, with slum views all around it. It has 27 stories, three helipads, air traffic control, a 168-car garage, a ballroom, 9 high speed elevators, a 50-seat theatre, terrace gardens, swimming pool, spa, health centre, a temple, and a snow room that spits out snowflakes from the walls, the skyscraper-mansion is one of world’s largest and most elaborate private homes, costing between US$1 and 2 billion to build.

Tata Group former chairman Ratan Tata said Antilia is an example of rich Indians’ lack of empathy for the poor. “The person who lives in there should be concerned about what he sees around him and asking can he make a difference. If he can not, then it’s sad because this country needs people to allocate some of their enormous wealth to finding ways of mitigating the hardship that people have. It makes me wonder why someone would do that. That’s what revolutions are made of.”

This guy is a genuine maniac. I’d welcome him of course, after 15 years of Mike Ashley, but bloody hell, elite professional football really is rotten to the core.

Don’t know but could be to gain sympathy for Bruce so we go easy on him on Friday. This lot have been playing us for years. I think we just ignore them and any noise they like to create about impending takeovers and just react to what we see with our own eyes.

    Beer,

From what I read, woodman was physically on his way to Bournemouth (on loan) when the club recalled him because of the dubs/darlow being out.
I have no idea if that’s true….but seems plausible.

He’s had an unexpected chance, I so wanted him to do well…..but I think he just hasn’t grasped it.
I’m guessing here, but I think he will be dropped now that darlow is back and that probably sadly signals the end of his NUFC career.

It was alarming on total sport, only a couple of NUFC fans, i may have missed the start, all the pundits backing Bruce, Steve Howdy saying the players need to take responsibility, then the journo, who evidently was Bruce’s friend, god it was embarrassing, at the end of the show, pleading don’t get on Bruce back at the game. 🙄

Yes, I was hoping Woodman would come good, he did so well at his loan club, Cardiff, it may be he didn’t get enough protection from the defence. You need a special player to be goal keeper at Newcastle, your have to stop the most shots out of any team in the PL. How daunting is that for a young lad.

What a coincidence eh, it`s just another load of bollocks to appease the masses , and to try and decrease a toxic atmosphere.

I didn’t clock that at first. How incredible, blaming lee Ryder and The Chronicle, for the fans anger toward the club. He’s from the area. His Dad was a diehard fan, he’s mates with Alan Shearer, and it’s like he just came down in the last shower.

    It’s pathetic, it really is.

Saudis are a big time investor in Mukesh Ambani’s business activities. It would of plausible if the old deal is repackaged with Ambani in the front. However, the development sounds very negative to me.

Mukesh Ambani’s wife has almost completed the process of destruction of football in India in partnership with a few politicians, movie actors, and cricketers. Now that she is pretty much done siphoning money out of the pockets of Indian sports fans, she could be running after the deluded elsewhere. That the group is after Newcastle doesn’t look to me to be very uplifting.

I’m more worried about Leeds than I was Man Utd. Bruce saves his worst performances for when he’s up against managers who play high intensity pressing modern football. Biesla, Potter, Frank, Rodgers and even Farke usually make us look like a team of 50 year olds. Hassenhutl is the only one he sometimes beats. These teams probably train intensely, while Bruce prefers to give the lads a day or two off so he can be pally with them and delay any player revolt, keeping him in a job. Or perhaps he just gives them the day off as he’s lazy and wants time off himself.

The pundit’s who usually start their defence of Bruce with ‘I’m good friends with Steve,’ are a disgrace. They’re clearly impartial and are only winding people up and making themselves seem clueless to fans of all clubs. They might as well get players Mams on as pundits. ‘So what’s your opinion Mrs Woodman.’…’Eee well, I think our Freddie was man of the match against Man Utd.’ Why do people listen to them? I turn it off at half time and full time.

Great post yesterday from Carltoon. You have to think the atmosphere will be toxic if mild-mannered equable posters like Carltoon are getting that angry. It also seems a few are going just to vent their anger.

Bruce will be praying for an early goal or a Leeds red card. Biesla won’t be praying, he will be drilling Leeds to go after us.

By trying to maintain a high line, Leeds tend to be vulnerable against fast counterattack. If we keep Murphy and Almirón on the wings with Saint Maximin in the middle and leave Gayle to poach we should be alright assuming our defense can grind out Leeds. Although I don’t know how far this is achievable (this is where better coaching could do us a lot of good), but the front four should try to improve their game reading and positional play. That way they could press for ball control farther up field without dropping back all the way.

To please the crowd, Bruce has been deploying his slow moving defenders farther up the pitch and in the process the defense is leaking goals. It would be more effective to put four defenders (my choice: Dummett, Schär, Fernández and Manquillo) and ask them staying put and go direct to Almirón and Murphy (Schär is capable of doing just that). Oh, and Darlow needs to keep the goal.

    Unused,
You are assuming Bruce does tactics. He hasn’t won in 5 so we will see a random change in tactics. My guess is Dummett and Krath will come in as fullbacks/ wingbacks to shore up the defence. Or he’ll play 8 defenders to fix the problem at the back, then be bewildered when we stop creating chances.

I’ve had a change of heart. I think Bruce will think nine at the back is the way to go, but won’t dare as fans hate it. I think he’ll go with whatever Jones suggests on this one, although with fullbacks shored up. At least that way he can blame others. Also I think he’s been too scared to drop Ritchie after he called him a coward so that will be interesting.

ZG: the guy should at least be able to do that are obvious to anyone watching the game. I just don’t know how he got his coaching license. With that said, Bruce is not the only one who should attract all the blame.

Many of our players are equally blameworthy. Let’s say I learnt a few things from someone that are critical for my professional performance. Would I ever unlearn them? That’s what precisely quite a few of our players have managed to do under Bruce’s watch.
