Bruce Once Again Finds Himself With An Injury Crisis To Navigate

Steve Bruce has a potential injury crisis on his hands once again. It’s nothing new as muscle injuries have been a constant since the 60-year-old was appointed just over 2 years ago.

The biggest worry is with striker Callum Wilson, who according to various reports could be out anywhere from another week to the end of October. Newcastle could find it difficult to absorb his loss if it ends up being the latter.

Newcastle have the following six fixtures through the end of October:

17 Sept – Leeds (Home)
25 Sept – Watford (Away)
2 Oct – Wolves (Away)
17 Oct – Tottenham (Home)
23 Oct – Crystal Palace (Away)
30 Oct – Chelsea (Home)

The probable scenario for Wilson’s return is the Tottenham match after the second international break. Wilson is so important to this team that Bruce may err on the side of caution. So waiting until after the two-week international break seems to make sense.

That would still mean Wilson misses three critical matches against teams in and around us at the moment. Watford and Wolves have just three points while Leeds are on two heading into Friday’s match.

Martin Dubravka and Jonjo Shelvey are the other two long-term injuries. Dubravka is out until November while Shelvey should be getting close to a return to training. The other unknown is Paul Dummett who has just struggled with fitness over the past few seasons.

The defender was close to a return against Southampton a few weeks ago but reaggravated his calf injury. Hopefully, Dummett is close to being available as he provides another option at the back.

Bruce currently has three 18-year-olds training with the senior squad. Dylan Stephenson was called up this week while Joe White made the bench at Old Trafford. Elliot Anderson is working his way back after missing the entirety of pre-season with a chronic hip problem.

Anderson got a 60 minute run out with the U23s on Monday. A match which both Stephenson and White also started. The lads lost 2-0 at West Brom but getting Anderson some minutes on the pitch is at least one positive to take away.

Bruce is unlikely to rely on any of the youngsters at this stage. Though Anderson could provide an option upfront. However, Bruce went with experience during difficult times last season and probably will do the same barring more injuries in attack.

We’re also waiting on news on Javier Manquillo, Ciaran Clark, and Joe Willock. The three suffered knocks over the weekend forcing their early exits. Hopefully, the news on them is better than what we’ve heard on Callum Wilson.

Bruce also confirmed last week that Ryan Fraser’s ankle injury wasn’t serious. The winger was again injured on international duty but it was later revealed to be just a twisted ankle. We’ll hopefully hear positive news on him and some others during Bruce’s press conference later this week.

How Will Newcastle Do Against Leeds On Friday?

Well at least it made the Nationals.

Newcastle United are investigating after several Under-23s players were involved in a bar-room brawl with the friends of academy manager Steve Harper’s son, leaving some of them with facial injuries

    The buck stops with Bruce.
    Setting standards.
    Looking after the players welfare.
Ensuring that they know the boundaries and don’t put themselves in these positions.

In such situations the leader has to fall.
    Resignation or dismissal.

    Ashley won’t.
    Written warning maybe?
    Nah. Won’t even be discussed.

    Shambolic at every level.

    From Nufc.com
“Sniping at journalists – or banning them – wilfully avoids the fact that we are regressing on and off the field under the guidance of Bruce and his employer, neither of whom actually seem bothered”

What standards are being set at the club now. Gayle being given a new three year deal sent out a message of neglect, as snippet above suggests Bruce does not seem bothered, all he seems to care about is his wage and being able to call himself a PL manager in the loosest sense of the word. He doesn’t give a jot about the mess he’s helping leave behind.

The WSL does not use goalline technology or video assistant referees.

    Surely not?
You mean that the FA and associated sponsors don’t want to spend money or be associated with events that don’t generate large audiences and revenues for them?

I thought the idea was to have equality in sport.

This all too familiar territory for Bruce I don’t think he has lasted past 3 seasons at one club in the premiership? Usually results in relegation or he gets sacked before that

We really are in line to do a Sunderland full of aging players on big money probably with no relegation clauses

The sooner we get rid of him the better cant take anymore pundits blindly backing because “Steve’s a good friend of mine” well I am sure he’s a good laugh on a night out but he’s not worthy of a Premier league club and neither are you! Which is why these pundits are on talksport rather than working with a club

To be fair TDSarf has to be right about lovely Mike, I mean he only appointed Bruce, its not like he has any say now in what he does and how he runs the team, be really hard work to replace him. Remember, Mike only made an extra 700 odd million throughout COVID, barely enough to live on with all his expenses, so not like he could really afford to invest in the team. Lets face it, its not really Bruce’s fault either way things are going, everything is down to the Chronicle isnt it. So on Friday, shouldnt be anyone shouting for Bruce’s head, Ashley’s or even the league, all of us need to turn on the Chronicle and get them out of business. Once they are gone, Newcastle will just take off and go on a massive winning run

Poor Mike and Bruce, they’ve done everything they possibly can to make fans happy and get behind them with support. Yet some fans still don’t like them or are unhappy with what they’re doing. You can’t win sometimes 🙁

Jail, I was posting about BBC Total sport, last night they had North East Journalist, good friend of Bruce, only one fan said it exactly how we feel. This Journalist, had just been talking to Bruce, saying “well he’s entitled to a holiday, and Bruce had met other Managers out n Portugal”. But at the end of the program, he pleased not to get onto Bruce’s back.

I think that’s potentially a good thing that we’re hearing journalists come out and try to defend him, pleading not to get on his back. Shows that clearly Bruce and the club are worried about the protests and fans reaction on Friday. The more we hear people come out and plead not to boo and get on his back, the more it shows that he and the club are worried. Keep cranking up the pressure and hopefully one of them is going to find the heat too much.

Ahh, Total sport, I don’t listen to it nowhere near as much as I used to, for no particular reason mind, maybe because I listen to more podcasts these days. I heard a little bit on the radio last night, I loved Howey as a player but he gets on my nerves a bit as a pundit with his ‘probablies’ St Maximumum and his strong mackem accent in general, added to the fact I don’t agree with much of what he says.

Very few former players will ever criticise Bruce. He’s one of them. There is absolutely no objectivity in football.
Which is why I respect Gary Neville as a pundit. He is objective in his assessments, irrespective of whether they are ex Manure, Liverpool or anyone else.

Bruce will face the media tomorrow according to The Chronicle:

I wonder if he’ll be asked about his outburst or give an apology in an attempt to calm the storm coming his way Friday. If he doubles down and stands by what he said then he can expect an even bigger wave of negativity coming his way Friday evening.

I no longer listen to Talksport, they are no different to any other biased radio station who tow the line and don`t give it out how it really is.
I bet not a single one of their hosts has mentioned the constant put down of our club by Bruce, and probably back him for the job he is doing.
Unless you support one of the greedy 6 Talk Sport will probably be one big yawn.

    Leeds will beat us comfortably.

Norwich play Watford at home on Saturday, a very winnable game for them.

So by 5pm on Saturday NUFC could be bottom of the league.

You need to sell Mike. With Bruce at the helm, the ship will sink. 100%

A good manager adapts to injuries, at backs. Bruce unfortunately will try and force players to play this 532 formation still.

Freshen it up, if Manquillo is fit. 433.

    Manquillo, Lascelles/Schar, Fernandez, Lewis
    Willock, Hayden, Longstaff
    Saint-Maximin, Gayle, Joelinton

Almiron, Murphy, Anderson can impact the game from the bench.

If Willock isn’t fit or up for defensive duties, then Hendrick will have to play or White possibly.

Lastly, I really like Dummett but is he another who needs to be moved on. He’s been injured more in the last year than Carroll was!

“You can talk about tactics as much as you like, it’s all about players”

Then, he proceed playing players out of position. No wonder, whichever team he manages, plays like headless chickens.
