On Friday, it was revealed that Newcastle’s new board would target players with Premier League experience entering the final years of their contracts. Their plan was to supplement these more economical signings with a few marquee names.
The list of targets has been plentiful over the past 48 hours with a handful of stars touted as being the new regime’s first big signing in January. We’ve already had Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly cited as top winter targets.
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has pinpointed Burnley center-back James Tarkowski as the likely choice to become one of the first players to spark Newcastle’s revolution. The 28-year-old certainly meets the criteria with 166 Premier League matches under his belt while in the final year of his contract.
Edwards reports that Tarkowski is very keen on the move. While Burnley boss Sean Dyche would love to keep his star defender at Turf Moor, he can do little to stand in his way as they could risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard is also of interest to Newcastle. Like Tarkowski, the 28-year-old’s contract ends next summer. However, his interest in coming to the North East is uncertain.
Lingard recently rejected a new deal at Old Trafford and has only had only one start this season, which was in the Carabao Cup defeat against West Ham. He spent the second half of last season on loan with The Hammers where he scored 9 goals and provided 5 assists.
Edwards also reports that the new owners believe every area of the pitch needs new blood. He says in addition to Tarkowski, a full-back, center-forward, central midfielder, and a winger could be targeted in January. That would, of course, mean a lot of the current squad would need to be moved out.
This winter we could see a grander version of 2013 when Newcastle added Moussa Sissoko, Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran, Massadio Haidara, and Kevin Mbabu to the ranks.

Comment #81Toney is going to be a future England ST, probably near future.
Should be all over resigning him, developed into a really well rounded player with great physicality and seems laser focused on being the best he can be.
Plus, if we’re targeting Europe in a couple of years, we’ll have to make that quote of players trained at the club which I believe he just qualifies for with us given his age when he first arrived here.
Likes of Dummett and Woodman aren’t going to cut it.

Just checked, I don’t think Toney does count as homegrown for us actually, arrived here at 19yo. Thought he was a bit younger when he signed.

Manchester United are amongst several Premier League clubs that are reportedly upset with the recent takeover at Newcastle United.
Flex pointed how the hypocrisy of United complaining after they were one of the founding members of the Super League.

Comment #87Karen Brady at West Ham.
Another morally bankrupt individual mouthing off about the takeover of NUFC.
Her Co Directors made their fortunes in sleazy porn.
Her club has been funded by dubious financial arrangements for their stadium.
These people need to give their mouths a rest.
True West Ham fans will never forgive her for what’s happened at their club.
She like Levy and others would have jumped at the chance of selling up a d missed the bus hence the whinging.
Methinks the lady doth protest too loud.

Comment #96Hayden is one that can stick around, see how he fares with better players and manager for a few years.
Top pro, very dependable and will at the very least be a good squad player for a couple of seasons.
Shelvey is the opposite. Pretty much epitomises the ‘ticking over’ happy to scrape by, zero drive culture of the last decade. Hope he’s sold by next summer.

Comment #99Steve Carney’s smirk…now that takes me back…Steve always has and always will be a Newcastle legend in my books…in the good old days when defenders were allowed to tackle…Carney was up there with Chopper Harris, Terry Cooper and Norman Hunter…but as the title suggests…when he saw a bad tackle on one of our own, he smirked, and within 5 minutes the offender was left on the floor in a different world of pain.
If we ever have a Hollywood style hall of fame in the pavement outside SJP, then Steve Carney is one the first people who should honoured in that way.
Love the man!

Comment #102Jail, what’s the panic about your money for membership? Who else can It go to? It goes to the club. Ashley has nothing whatsoever to do with the club any more. He’s sold. I know it is a bit of an odd concept to get used to after 14 years. He has no claim whatsoever on the club or it’s affairs.
Also, the matter of Sports Direct signage will be settled with Sports Direct, which isn’t Mike Ashley either, though he is a majority shareholder. Their signs will stay up for as long as currently contracted unless they are paid off.

Comment #110Typically clubs jack up prices when they know a cash rich buyer is interested in their players. Wouldn’t it be brilliant if we already had agreements in place to buy certain players prior to the takeover? Might also be another reason for all of the twisting going only clubs now the takeover is announced. Probably not but would amuse me lol

Comment #114Weirdly, I knew Karen Brady in the early 90s, she was shagging one of her dancers in the Ann Summers Stripergram stuff they did at the time, lived in Croydon.
She was off her head on goodness knows what, I think it was Speed and Coke (not Cola), trying to think of her boyfriend’s name, worked for Canon in SE1 at the time, it’ll come to me.
He was dumped then they started to be respectable.

Comment #115Lindgaard is a terrible signing and wouldnt be anywhere near England if he wasnt on Man Utd’s books. Southgate is a nice guy but useless. Will be sacked quickly whenever he moves into club management. Which will be after we play conservative garbage when he has endless brilliance at his disposal in Qatar. Declan Rice is awful an all and is a handbrake to any team. Makes David Batty look like Gazza
