On Friday, it was revealed that Newcastle’s new board would target players with Premier League experience entering the final years of their contracts. Their plan was to supplement these more economical signings with a few marquee names.
The list of targets has been plentiful over the past 48 hours with a handful of stars touted as being the new regime’s first big signing in January. We’ve already had Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly cited as top winter targets.
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has pinpointed Burnley center-back James Tarkowski as the likely choice to become one of the first players to spark Newcastle’s revolution. The 28-year-old certainly meets the criteria with 166 Premier League matches under his belt while in the final year of his contract.
Edwards reports that Tarkowski is very keen on the move. While Burnley boss Sean Dyche would love to keep his star defender at Turf Moor, he can do little to stand in his way as they could risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard is also of interest to Newcastle. Like Tarkowski, the 28-year-old’s contract ends next summer. However, his interest in coming to the North East is uncertain.
Lingard recently rejected a new deal at Old Trafford and has only had only one start this season, which was in the Carabao Cup defeat against West Ham. He spent the second half of last season on loan with The Hammers where he scored 9 goals and provided 5 assists.
Edwards also reports that the new owners believe every area of the pitch needs new blood. He says in addition to Tarkowski, a full-back, center-forward, central midfielder, and a winger could be targeted in January. That would, of course, mean a lot of the current squad would need to be moved out.
This winter we could see a grander version of 2013 when Newcastle added Moussa Sissoko, Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran, Massadio Haidara, and Kevin Mbabu to the ranks.

Comment #128Evening All, Just catching up on the chats today, they say a week is a long time in politics, well this time last week we were all feeling empty and in despair, so what a difference a week has made in the lives of all Newcastle UNITED fans all over the world. Fellow Toon fans this has been an incredible journey in more ways than one, along the way we have had the pandemic, our club have been going from one crisis to another, the takeover has been on and of so many times, on the blog there has been total anger and frustration which has caused infighting and rows, we really have been put through the mill in more ways than one. I want to congratulate each and ever member of this fine blog, the posts this week have been nothing short of exemplary, some fine and intelligent people on this blog, and i think its been a total honour to chatting to you all in the past fellow toon fans. This week has been a tsunami of unbridled joy and happiness of Toon fans around the world, and its been very well articulated by ever fan on this blog. In conclusion i have not been able to celebrate due to my work commitments until now, well ive just opened my first can of Carlsberg, later on ill be opening anpotcheen unopened 10 year old bottle of potcheen which ive kept for a very special occasion, well i can`t think of a better occasion than tonight ladies and gentlemen. To all my friends and fellow Toon fans, ill say a big Irish SLAINTE.

Comment #140Actually KK could do a job as caretaker with Jonsey as he will explain to the players what it means to wear the shirt and inspire them until we appoint a quality manager
I’m sure he will get an extra 20% more than Brucey gets out of them

‘We are the Geordies’
Saved it as I didn’t want to watch it whilst being so low having Bruceless here and no sign of Ashley leaving.
Enjoyed it, was nice and uplifting.
What capped it was right at the end before the credits it says
In 2020 Mike Ashley accepted a bid which would make Nufc the richest club in the world.
The rest including Ashley is History…..
O Happy day

Comment #147Need a DOF and manager first, and to work out our targets through the interview processes and in their first two months on the job.
I hope they go young and high quality and of course in the positions of highest priority.
Spine first, then defense, and you really do want top appointments at DOF and manager, that must be the top priority first of all.
I like do like the idea of Jones taking the team v Tottenham, with Shearer and Keegan saying a few words to the lads in the dressing room before the match, or even just poking their head round the door to wish them luck. That’d give them a big lift.
