The Newcastle U23s picked up a 4-0 win over Birmingham City in their Premier League Cup match on Monday evening. A trialist got the scoring started with a goal in the 8th minute. Elliot Anderson added two second-half goals while Dylan Stephenson continued his hot streak with his 8th goal of the season.
Jonjo Shelvey started the match and got 79 minutes under his belt before being replaced by Jack Young. Shelvey launched a long ball early in the match that the trialist was able to bring down and put into the back of the net for the opening goal.
After the match, Shelvey spoke to NUFC TV and was asked about his recovery from the injury that has sidelined him since the season’s opening match. Shelvey revealed that he hopes to be involved for Spurs on Sunday as he said the following:
“I just assume that we are going to sit down tomorrow and make a plan and hopefully be involved in some sort against Tottenham.
“I’ll recover tomorrow and then train again Wednesday. Go from there, I feel good. I’ve been working with a nutritionist off the pitch so things are looking good.”
Of course, Sunday is the first match of the new era at Newcastle United. Both the U23s and the Newcastle women have now picked up wins since the takeover was confirmed. Hopefully, the lads can follow suit on Sunday and pick up our first win of this campaign.
Shelvey was asked about the crazy past few days which has transformed the club. Of course, he thinks it’s massive for the fans. Jonjo also hopes to mark the grand occasion with a good performance in front of a sellout crowd at St. James’ Park.
“It’s been massive news for the fans and for the club. It’s terrific. All that matters now is Sunday.
“We’ve to really put a show on the fans. I’m sure they’ll be behind us as they usually are.
“I’ve heard it’s a sellout so I’m looking forward to hopefully playing a part in it.”

Comment #82Bill, apparently Shelvey gave a master class, and mind he’s looking very fit. I know we’ll need an upgrade but we need him to be playing well to get us to January.

Interesting you should say that, wonder if he found the U23s easier to play way cos of their energy and willingness to chase more and take up better positions for his passes.
Perhaps Jonesy should draft a couple of them in now to replace Hendrick and Gayle!

Comment #89NYmag I’ve got a photo of me on the pitch, taken after a matcha couple of season’s ago, I put it as my avatar, but it distorted my face, so I took it down fast, I will allow Mandy to take my place with pleasure, I’m still worried about getting points on board, but looking forward to the game.

Comment #91I’m just hoping, it’s not going to be an anti climax, you just know Spurs will be up for it, as will every other team. Let’s hope they’re drilling the defense, line Rafa used to. It was amazing watching how the defense moved as a unit, now we’ve been a shambles.

Comment #93I think from an engineering perspective, you can surely add another tier to the Gallowgate and its corners, and the on the East Stand side, relocate the corporate and press boxes, going straight up one on top of the other, Bombonera style, and so create space for a few thousand extra seats in the Milburn too, altogether pushing the capacity to over 60 000.

Once Bruce is gone (hopefully very soon) I was thinking of just changing my name to Scythe, but if Refectory Chubs is popular then that could be a possibility!
I’m not even chubby, but I don’t suppose that matters on the Internet, does it?

Comment #95I really would like us to consolidate our Premier League position by going for quality players like Matheus Pereira, Ward-Prowse, Adama Traore, Zaha etc sprinkled with a marquee signing like Coutinho, Koulibally etc.
That to me is the way forward and would go a long way to making us a formidable team that would quickly rise up the table.

We’ll we’ve got enough grass here for that to make sense. I never lived in a house with a single blade of grass or a tree when I was in Shields, and now I’ve got all of this open space and a million trees, it’s a bit mental.
Not my favourite time of year with all of the leaves coming down. You don’t think about that when you buy a house. Still, I’m very lucky to be where I am 🙂

I like that idea too, of buying known quantities in the league who have proven themselves for a few seasons already and know the league well. Combined with some quality talent from the continent. Surely a winning formula. Problem is, everyone else knows how much money we have now and they’ll be asking silly money for players, especially if we want to get them in January.

Comment #99Scythe – yeah I am afraid we can’t escape inflated prices. Not too sure many know of our sound footing regarding FFP, if not we could use that to our advantage.
I am just overjoyed and so so excited to see the players we bring in. We can look forward to transfer windows and exciting football again.
I am still in shock about it all.

Comment #100If we know about our situation regarding FFP, then you can be sure that every other club does too. It’s pretty well known that Ashley didn’t splash the cash and our finances are published every year.
We need players in January and teams are going to be even more reluctant to lose their best players in the middle of the season and will want to be compensated in a major way to let anyone go.
Southampton and Leicester are two great examples of teams who recruit well and then sell on at least one player per season for big bucks. We could grab Ward Prowse and Tielemans from each of them for a good amount and that would definitely reinforce our central midfield.

Comment #102Someone earlier was asking about goalkeeper who played for England the other day. That was Sam Johnston at West Brom and he’s out of contract next summer. He’ll be getting some nice offers I bet.
We could also try for Rüdiger and Süle, two German centre-backs who are out of contract at the end of the season as well.

Comment #103What’s peoples expectations for this season? I think mid-table is realistic. I’d be happy with 10th.
I’d definitely like to see Jones given a chance – at least a few games – as caretaker. If he keeps winning perhaps leave him in until the end of the season.

Comment #104If We’ve got 200m budget, it can go quite sharp. It would get you three players from Toney, Maddison, Benrahama, Bowen, Watkins,Traore etc. I still think we should use smart scouting and bring in players around the 20-30m range. All the above stood out like sore thumbs in the Championship and I can’t believe we didn’t get any. I’d still like a small bid for Jon Swift from Reading. He would have been about 3m before this season, and he’s been excellent for several years so no flash in the pan. Maybe 10m now. Huge upgrade on Shelvey who isn’t half the player he used to be.

Comment #106I think it’s tough to say where we’ll finish this season without knowing what we’re working with. A workman is only as good as his tools and we don’t know who our workman is yet, or what tools he’ll have at his disposal.
You have to think we can get 17th at a bare minimum, right? To attract the right players next summer though we really have to show our potential between now and the end of the season. We can start negotiating with out of contract players in January so if we can get into the top ten before then, that’ll be advantageous.
Way too many unknowns and variables to predict anything right now for me.

Comment #107One problem is We’re a team everybody wants to beat now, but we arent good enough to beat teams that are on point. Every now and again we catch a team napping or struggling with injuries or we get a lucky 90th minute goal. That’s how we beat teams generally. Almost any team that spends a tiny bit money can accumulate points like this, and it will get you close to the 38 pt mark. You have to be very bad and have poor players to not be able to do this. Usually Championship teams.

Comment #108Having Bruce at St James next week, would be like 9 friends secretly organising a stag holiday, but not telling or inviting a tenth friend, only for the 10th friend to coincedentally turn up at the same hotel asking ‘what you doing here?’
It would be awkward and bring everybody down and perhaps cause rows. Who is to say some player with a grudge isn’t just going to tell Bruce to go ** himself?

It would be nice to see Anderson, and possibly Stephensen and Young get some minutes. After Jan it will be difficult for them, and a nice cameo or two would help secure them a better loan than poor Matty got.

Comment #110There are certain people on Twitter who still read the blog (despite being smart enough to get themselves banned from said blog) who are constantly whining about how stupid everyone is on here. They claim that Bruce isn’t as reviled at SJP as he is on here and we’re all idiots (much stronger names are used) for thinking he’s unpopular.
I think the general consensus on here reflects the feeling inside the ground and that the new owners will know that too. Having Bruce at the Spurs game would be a major mistake. They’re smart (unlike us lot apparently) and they’ll do what is right.

Comment #111Some people have drawn their battle lines and just want to say the opposte of their enemies because disagreeing allows them the opportunity to say they are stupid (which really means I am so smart and superior). I suspect others with contrary opinions are just white Uncle Toms who want to suck up to those in power. Then of course, some just don’t know much and are easily swayed by what the opinions of pundits or influencers etc they read.

I think some of the stuff written about Bruce being a stain is unpleasant and doesn’t reflect well. Im pretty sure the % level of vitriol on here is higher than the ground, but obviously I can’t be certain, but I’d imagine that to be the case.
That said, i think he has to go, asap, and despite all their money and communication, it would be a poor start from Amanda and Co to keep him on.

Comment #115I too would like to see KK involved, if only for his abundant passion and leadership skills. I think Jones and Keegan could very well be a good partnership until whoever the next stepping stone is becomes available or will take the leap of faith and we break their contract accordingly.
KK has been out of football too long to take training and develop game-day strategies, but his presence on the training ground and in pre match motivational speechless could well prove priceless

“but obviously I can’t be certain”
Just as you got the crowds feelings over our former manager badly wrong you have managed to do it again with Bruce. There has never been a more disliked manager in our modern history, not one that stayed so long anyway. Had we not have still been in the game against Leeds he would have been called a lot worse than a stain.

Comment #120The thing about Bruce that’s always annoyed me (note the past tense) is how utterly lost and clueless he looks when watching the game. He has that haunted look only alcoholics have, his eyes are glazed and you can tell there’s absolutely nothing going on behind them…he’s sort of in a daze and has no clue what to do.
It’s not east to describe what I mean…he can see what’s happening but has no answers. You can see Pep is always thinking, analysing and developing a new strategy if the game is not going as planned, Jose famously subbed someone after about 15 minutes because he could see his initial strategy wasn’t working…but our man Bruce just doesn’t have the capacity to think stuff through like the elite.
He should never have been appointed in the first place.
