The Newcastle U23s picked up a 4-0 win over Birmingham City in their Premier League Cup match on Monday evening. A trialist got the scoring started with a goal in the 8th minute. Elliot Anderson added two second-half goals while Dylan Stephenson continued his hot streak with his 8th goal of the season.
Jonjo Shelvey started the match and got 79 minutes under his belt before being replaced by Jack Young. Shelvey launched a long ball early in the match that the trialist was able to bring down and put into the back of the net for the opening goal.
After the match, Shelvey spoke to NUFC TV and was asked about his recovery from the injury that has sidelined him since the season’s opening match. Shelvey revealed that he hopes to be involved for Spurs on Sunday as he said the following:
“I just assume that we are going to sit down tomorrow and make a plan and hopefully be involved in some sort against Tottenham.
“I’ll recover tomorrow and then train again Wednesday. Go from there, I feel good. I’ve been working with a nutritionist off the pitch so things are looking good.”
Of course, Sunday is the first match of the new era at Newcastle United. Both the U23s and the Newcastle women have now picked up wins since the takeover was confirmed. Hopefully, the lads can follow suit on Sunday and pick up our first win of this campaign.
Shelvey was asked about the crazy past few days which has transformed the club. Of course, he thinks it’s massive for the fans. Jonjo also hopes to mark the grand occasion with a good performance in front of a sellout crowd at St. James’ Park.
“It’s been massive news for the fans and for the club. It’s terrific. All that matters now is Sunday.
“We’ve to really put a show on the fans. I’m sure they’ll be behind us as they usually are.
“I’ve heard it’s a sellout so I’m looking forward to hopefully playing a part in it.”

Comment #161I would find it very surprising if the new owners hadn’t already got some advice and a manager already lines up. They must have been aware that the takeover was going to get the green light for some time. Perhaps they have put those thoughts on hold until a DOF is appointed and give him/her the choice.
Perhaps their choice is not available until the end of the season and it is proving problematic to get a quality manager to accept a short term contract managing a poor squad by their usual standards.

Comment #162For me Keegan/Jones is the ideal interim solution until a new manager is found.
Keegan would slot into Bruce’s role which involves no football knowledge anyway. So Keegan s lack of tactical nouse and current players etc would have no bearing.
He could be the media face and the motivational/ team spirit man. Those qualities don’t fade with time away from football. Jones can take care of the football side, training, tactics, formation etc with Keegan learning from Jones.
Would be cheap and an exciting experiment whilest we wait for the new appointment.

Morning mate, I still cannot stop smiling, just to be able to look at players that are possibilities and not free transfers or players looking to use us as a stepping stone – just forgot what that was like.
See Bruce is at work early today !
See what today brings eh.

Comment #164On contracts, serious question, don’t know genuinely.
If a totally new Ownership/Company buys out another company, do contracts of employment made with the 1st Company remain valid and binding, or can the new Company tear them up and renegotiate terms of employment with all remaining staff, players, coaches etc??
Anyone good on corporate HR law??
Asking because if all previous contracts are void, then we could be in a much healthier position than we thought, re players on long contracts etc and of course Bruce’s contract.

Comment #165@162…I can see that working as well. Not sure if it’ll happen but it wouldn’t worry me one bit if that’s what transpired.
Keegan infectious enthusiasm and making the current crop of players understand what playing for Newcastle is really all about is key IMO.

Comment #168KK never had an immediate effect when he turned up last time and that was with players who knew all about him. Love to see him in an ambassadorial role but not sure about as manager, although the romance effect is there.

Comment #169Shelvey, I don’t want you to “put on a show” this is not Strictly Come Dancing. I want you and the players to play with purpose, physicality, attitude and determination.
Forget what Bruce has been telling you, as Dehlia says “let’s be having you”.
Not a good idea putting Keegan in the dressing room as interim manager, he’s not coached in years. Might give a good Pep talk but must be ring rusty on tactics.
Give an Ambassadorial role or PR with a link to TV and media. I’d love that.

Comment #170Cleveleysbob, having been through it I know a little bit about it if, but not loads. If the company you work for gets bought out then your terms of employment go across exactly the same to the new owner. Its called TUPE. But on day 1 the new employer can easily change your terms of employment, they just have to go through due process.
However that is a long term contract of employment. It must be different for those on contracts which run out, otherwise you would see the decks cleared a lot more easily when teams are bought out.

I think it’s important KK knows and understands he is NOT going to be the manager. In this scenario we are talking about, Jones is the interim manager and Keegan is in a support role…it has to be made clear KK will never be manager and not in charge of anything but motivational aspects and helping out with player recruitment…attracting players to the north-east will still be difficult but he’s proved brilliant at that job on many occasions when managing us previously.

Comment #175Re Newcastle in the Middle East, all I’ll say is I saw a Toon shirt (with sponsor on) in a Sports Shop window yesterday for the first time ever (previously they wouldn’t even order them for you), so yes, I’m guessing it’s a big thing.

Comment #178Dele is good if he is played as a Nr10 and not CM.
Harry Kane dropping deep has killed Dele at Spurs.
But his attitude is awful, absolutely no go. If you watched the spurs documentary on Amazon Prime you would see. Jose was pulling his hair out with this guy.

I think we have to be careful signing guys who’s careers look like they have burned out! The top 6 will be dying to sell us their cast offs but we just have to be careful same with Barca, Madrid etc players
Delli Alli is a flash pansy who hasn’t played well in about 3 seasons now!
Coutinho is the same would only be interested in the money and would no doubt get injured
Getting some young hungry players who have experience of the premiership and doing well would be better for long term and short term names such as:
Tarkowski
Phillips
Gallagher
Traore
Ward Prowse
What I think with guys like that is you will get guys who would love to play for us are quality enough to help us get established and young enough that they can also grow as we get better

He’s been given two fresh starts under two different managers and doesn’t seem interested, I think he’s more in to his Instagram account than playing football. A top class RB, CB, Van De Beek and Lacazette in January and we’ll be fine.

Comment #198A bit of background checking on some players should easily tell you who would be perfect for the club
If they love the big City life and are always out in clubs best to avoid them
There are plenty of amazing players from Germany, Denmark and Holland who can be quite humble family orientated people who are amazing players who would instantly improve us!
