Steve Bruce has survived another day at Newcastle United as the clock ticks down to Sunday’s match against Spurs. The head coach’s future remains on life support but he has reportedly made a positive impression on the new owners.
In an exclusive in The Telegraph, Luke Edwards sheds some light on Bruce’s continuing presence with the club. The 60-year-old took training on Tuesday which reportedly was a surprise to some staff.
On Monday, Bruce met with members of the board and was impressed with the way he was received. They reportedly listened intently to what he had to say hoping to gain as much information on the club that could be gleaned.
This was also the approach the new owners are taking with Lee Charnley, who reportedly will remain on for a bit longer than initially anticipated. Charnley knows all the inner workings of the club and can be of immense help with the transition.
With the takeover happening unexpectedly last week, the new owners are taking advantage of the wealth of information that Bruce and Charnley are able to provide. This will help ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
Edwards states that Bruce was commended for keeping Newcastle in the Premier League. The new owners also were pleased with his public stance on the takeover before and after its completion.
Bruce has been told that no final decision has been made and that more dialogue will take place in the immediate future. However, it is still believed that Bruce will be let go later this week.
The Northern Echo has added that the consortium prefer to have a replacement identified and ‘all-but-guaranteed’ before letting Bruce go. New non-executive chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan will have to greenlight a decision on Bruce’s future as well as his replacement.
The PIF governor is expected to be at St. James’ Park on Sunday. Edwards suspects the delay in a decision on Bruce could be due to Al-Rumayyan needing to be briefed on Monday’s meeting. Both The Telegraph and The Northern Echo still feel it is highly unlikely Bruce will remain on board by Sunday’s match against Spurs.

Comment #5Heard from a fella who knows another fella that Bruce is toast. Good riddance to another charlatan appointed by the fat cockney sh1t. Utterly useless and uninspiring. Does 9:30 till 3 every day and thinks he’s pulling his puds out. 2 hours for dinner an all. Blessed.

Sky said he was due to record some media work this afternoon, ahead of Sunday’s match marking his 1000th game. This has been postponed to later in the week .. another sign that he’s unlikely to be there Sunday?

Comment #7Mctoon problem is the closer its gets to Sunday the more cruel it will be to sack him. Because its like waiting all this time dangling his 1000th match in front of him and taking it away at the last minute. They definitely won’t do that imo. So I reckon if he’s not gone by tomorrow he’s definitely here for the Spurs match.

Comment #14It’s not negativity it’s just a realisation IF TRUE, that they are weak and let their hearts rule their heads, and to an extent they wouldn’t be listening to the fans.
However that isn’t the case unless it happens tbf, I thought that was pretty obvious to glean from what I wrote.

Comment #15I suppose they have told him they will be looking for a replacement, and until they have decided what to do, they would like him to remain in the role.
I think he’s still likely to go before Spurs, and he’ll of course be well compensated when he does, and I think on balance he has done a tough job reasonably well in his time for us, but in terms of performances and points, he really hasn’t done near enough to continue beyond the very short term, particularly under the circumstances.
He’ll come out of all this okay I think, reputation wise, even on Tyneside given a little more time. Decent bloke, and capable if perhaps limited manager, who kept the club up until the sale went through, that’s how he’ll be seen, and maybe he will get his 1000th game in management in the Newcastle dugout.
I wouldn’t really begrudge him that, all things considered, even if it isn’t ideal, but I still think he’ll be gone before Spurs.

Sorry for the late response. Haven’t seen any of Bob’s show with Paul Whitehouse yet. I keep planning on catching it up on the BBC iPlayer. Hopefully soon!
And the name generator may have coughed up 10,000 possible names for me, but I bet none of them can beat Refectory Chubs 🙂

That’s assuming he’s not aware of it happening?
I could be miles off for sure, but all the members of the consortium will likely be there together for the first time, I very much doubt the PR team advising them will want him anywhere near the stadium.
They will be presenting themselves to the fans (and through sky) Saudi, and the world. They won’t want the sound of booing or dissenting chants heard (no matter who it’s aimed at) nor will they want continued speculation by Sky on Bruce’s future to steal some of their limelight.
As I say it’s just my opinion.

Comment #22IrishRob – you have to read the room. That’s Luke Edwards doing the report – Bruce’s mate and a thorn during the drawn out takeover, that he often said wouldn’t happen.
‘Impressed’ means he ‘listened’…oooohhh. As well as ‘kept us up’ – wow. All of the little indicators suggest he will be gone this week #fingerscrossed

Comment #26I doubt Bruce impressed anyone. They’re probably trying to avoid paying the tw@t millions.
They haven’t got anyone in the club nor in the consortium who can explain the toxic effect of Bruce’s position!
They will know after Sunday if we lose!

Comment #34For the majority of fans , keeping Bruce on board is a disaster and will be a major disappointment dulling the feel good factor at the weekend .. players expect a change , fans expect a change , media expect a change …will be a bit gutted if he takes credit for player bounce this weekend.
I guess it means there is nobody in line to replace him and his useless staff and Jones can’t do everything but it will be a major disappointment to see him in the dugout at the weekend

Comment #35Bruce deserves pelters from the crowd if he’s anywhere near the pitch on Sunday. Its the fans club and we have had enough of the sh1t craic and Sh1t football. The new owners really need to know from day1, if they misread fan opinion to the extent of letting this turd carry on they need a little rethink. Its common sense and good business to shed the burden of Bruce and his lower league coaching team. Not good enough for Pools.

Comment #40Just a diffrent view. Bruce by many is always called a Players manager, ( I listern to many players podcasts and they all love him) Well then, give them one game to show it. I do not get it but most of the squad is available by all accounts. The Mecca will be bouncing … do not duck up Bruce your chance. I hope Miggy is back . No excuses
