World-Renowned Sporting Director Linked Last Year Is Keen On NUFC Role – Report

Soon after the celebrations of Thursday night ended, the speculation began on who was in contention for key positions at St. James’ Park. We were inundated with managerial candidates and that list seems to grow daily.

It was not only who would replace Steve Bruce that made the headlines. The new role of Sporting Director immediately became an intriguing prospect which garnered a lot of attention in the press.

Manchester City’s Academy Director Jason Wilcox was immediately put forth as a potential candidate. There was also brief speculation surrounding former Liverpool Chief Scout Frank McParland, who is reportedly currently occupying an informal advisory role.

Ralf Rangnick’s name soon starting doing the rounds. The former Sporting Director of RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg is one of the top recruiting talents in football. However, he just accepted a position with Locomotiv Moscow in July.

The Athletic’s George Caulkin believes the 63-year-old is not currently in the frame for a position at Newcastle writing:

For a variety of complicated reasons, I was told there’s “no chance” of Rangnick coming to Newcastle, but I’m not setting that in stone either yet. I just don’t think the club are at the decision-making stage and won’t be for a while.

One man who appears to definitively be in the conversation is Antero Henrique of Porto and PSG fame. The 53-year-old was sounded out by the consortium last year and recent reports have him still high on their list.

Sky Sports has added another name that was touted as a candidate last year in Luis Campos. The 57-year-old was with Lille at the time and turned down the consortium’s advances.

Campos left Lille in December of last year after the club was sold and has still not linked up with another club. Pete Graves has tweeted the following scoop from his colleague Gary Cotterill.

Campos was a manager with a number of clubs in his native Portugal before joining Real Madrid as a scout. He made his name when he joined Monaco in 2013 becoming their Sporting Director the following year.

Though he left the previous year, his recruiting talents led to a dream season in 2017 when Monaco won the Ligue 1 title and reached the Champions League semi-final. The following summer Monaco was raided as Kylian Mbappe, Anthony Martial, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy, and Tiémoué Bakayoko were all sold.

Here is Graves’ conversation with Cotterill on Sky Sports.

    Aye 100%.

They don’t need to rush and I imagine it will be a well thought through process.

It would be a mistake to keep Bruce for Spurs. Clean start please.

The energy of the new era is greater than what Bruce has to offer.

Isn’t it great to have hiod back. We are linked with fantastic football Brain’s for leading us forward for years. I know Bruce is still in place but I can’t see this being for too long. We have to walk before we can run. Amanda says she wants the infrastructure in place first and I totally agree. Let’s try and sort out league position etc now and then move forward as one united team and fanbase. Be honest, thoughts of maybe signing icardi, bale, hazard etc its just amazing to have that feeling of hope back. Sorry for long message I’m just so happy.

Captain James T Kirk of the starship Enterprise boldly went where quite a few had been before. Although none were as experienced.

Given the structures being mentioned, you would want to bring in these director roles first and then come to an agreement on Manager. You can’t go hire xyz manager and then assume they get on with the director.

In some ways the neglect of the squad will help us. There are quite a few players who are coming to the ends of their contracts who can be replaced without much cost, and only a few on longer contracts who need removing asap. The timing of the takeover isn’t bad either, a new manager coming in gets a good chance to assess the squad and see who he wants to keep on before January.

It’s a building process, doubt they’ll bring in more than three or four first team players at at time.

Too many new faces at once would cause all sorts of problems, plus some of the current squad will step up with new coaches.

As I’ve said I expect the spine to be looked at first, striker CM CB.

Maybe one possibly two more, can’t see them signing 5 or 6 for first team off the bat, be crazy to do so.

I think they’ll go for a cpl of the soon to be out of contract players available.

    Tchaikovsky from Burnley
    Kessie from AC

The striker I couldn’t tell you, I reckon that’s where they’ll spend, not massive but that’ll be their marquee signing.

I think easiest way of looking at January is to consider the areas even Bruce wanted to improve (reportedly) as a priority which Iwouldn’t disagree with and 2 clear ones were CB and DM

I would also expect another striker and maybe RB and LB but those positions could depend on which way we are going to set up

Looking from that perspectve I would start ny squad trim with Woodman ( loan) Clark (sale) Hendricks ( sale) Kraft (sale) Gayle ( sale) might have to be loans and there are other options of course depending on who might be coming in

As Freddie Shepherd used to say there are only so many pegs in dressing room and those would free up places without any major impact and give us room for 5 incoming

Speculation on outgoings is easier I think 🙂

Quite possibly, too many cooks an all that.

We should have DOF and Manager in by then so I’ll trust their judgement when it comes to it.

Even though we have all the money we should still box clever and not get carried away.

Got to be the right players, no players looking for a final paycheck!

No idea what role Bruce ( director of what??) could be offered at the club, but I would hope he would take his millions (football truly is an obscene sport financially) and slink off.

As for the physical references to him, as someone was saying earlier. I agree not in good taste lads

I think they should give Bruce some sort of job but make him work nights, I very much doubt there’s anything in his contract to say they can’t make him work nightshift, see how long he puts up with it before he raps.

Feel like these Rodgers rumours could be true.

Odds came in strong yesterday (almost evens now which has been as short as anybody has been) when there wasn’t much talk about him, no more than anybody else anyway, which suggests some people somewhere putting heavy bets on him.

    Now talks of a clause.

If it’s true, bring Ndidi in January please 🙂

Seems like some momentum behind it.

It’s one of those football tropes that rarely happens. Like players being swapped.

Rudiger is available on a free end of season, how`s that for a steal, bring Tarkowski in in January for 15M, his contract is up in the summer too.
You don`t have to spend shed loads to buy quality and a good DOF will know that.
The sooner we bring him in the better.

    Rudiger
    Romagnoli
    Sule
    Christensen
    Tarkowski
    Luiz Felipe (of Lazio)
    Ginter

7 Cbs I’d take who are out of contract in summer 2022

Move on to summer 2023 and you have:

    Koulibaly
    Skriniar
    Milenkovic
    Soyuncu

A complete revamp of our ageing, tired looking CB options is very possible.

I don’t like Rodgers but if that is the choice then i will be 100% behind it because that is what being a fan now means

Mind £16M stings a bit if only because I am a VFM sort of guy 🙂

All speculation without much foundation though i think

I keep thinking that Board woud be considering DOF and manager together or at least the former role first but maybe not

However just because you have money it isn’t a good look to be prepared to waste it on chopping and changing in short order

I agree about January, 3 or 4 players in to fill positions we can all see are seriously lacking ability and strength of depth. It’ll be easier for surplus players to leave for another club as they’ll know they’ve nee chance of getting another chance at the toon. Plus there will be more people that just Shola working on loan scenarios, a dedicated department you’d imagine.
I don’t see a big spend in January unless we’re really in the clarts, just a conservative spend to ensure safety which gives them time to prepare for the summer window.
Other clubs all over the world will be scrambling to tie down any of their top players who are out of contract at end of season before the Toon can potentially speak to them in January. Exciting times 🙂
