Sky Sports reported earlier today that Brendan Rodgers has become Newcastle’s number one target to take over when Steve Bruce is let go. The report comes from Sky Sports Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio.
Here is a report on Sky Sports with local journalist Keith Downie providing some more information.
?BREAKING ?
Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers is the 'number 1' target to take over as Newcastle manager according to Sky in Italy.
It would cost €16m to get Rodgers out of his contract which will not be a problem for Newcastle.
[@SkySports_Keith via @DiMarzio] pic.twitter.com/ldO5ahTNte
— Football Daily (@footballdaily) October 13, 2021
Downie emphasizes in his report that the claim comes from Di Marzio and not from his sources. Looking at Di Marzio’s initial report it is very scant on details. The most prevalent one being that Rodgers has a €16m (£13.6m) release clause in his contract.
If you combine the cash to take Rodgers from Leicester with the close to £8m Newcastle would have to pay Bruce in compensation, it’s quite a large amount of money for this particular managerial swap.
It didn’t take long for someone to refute this breaking news. John Percy with the Telegraph has rebutted this claim and emphatically states that Rodgers has no desire to leave the King Power Stadium. His colleague Luke Edwards has vouched for Percy’s accuracy in his reporting.
That’s this story killed and wrapped up in a body bag. JP knows. He always knows #nufc https://t.co/ghLRS3rmSd

Comment #48Well we know now they’re willing to spend £13M compo for a manager, surely Conte is willing to come on £10M a year. Maybe they will go for Mourinho?

yes but then again money ( or lots of it) is very persuasive
He is doing very well for them but will it last? who knows and how well could money be used
I remember my utter disbelief when a Man U supporter at work came gleefully to tell me that Andy Cole had been sold to them by Keegan
Made no sense financially competitively or for long term development but it did to KK and Board

Comment #52James, if they are interviewing 2 DOF’S and both rate Rodgers, or another manager, then we could plough ahead with a managerial appt. Personally I’d love Poch is the summer. Or the Ajax guy, Favre, Potter. We need a high press high energy game to get StJames bouncing.

Comment #53Shearer has already said he’s obligated to TV work on Sunday so can’t be there.
Maybe he can slink his way out of it somehow, but didn’t sound like it when he spoke to Newcastle Fans TV a few days ago.

He told us we’d get our club back one day mate!
He has the right to come out and say he told us we’d get our club back, maybe he’ll mention that in the pre-match presser 😆
Or he’s just keeping schtum and enjoying it all from afar.
His silence is deafening though isn’t it? Bizarrely so!
Wouldn’t do any worse than Bruce and he’s already got the European finalists attacking coach in position.

Comment #56Don’t want Potter personally. Achieved nothing to date. Even Howe is more accomplished with his 9th placed Bournemouth finish and he turned out to be bang average.
Doubt he’s even under consideration, not high profile enough. Better than Bruce is all he has going for him in my eyes, beware of flavour of the month managers.

Comment #57Poch to get sacked in the summer?
He mustn`t be doing a very good job to predict that.
Is he really the sort of man we want at the club. If he can`t get a tune out of Mappe and co then he has no chance here.

Comment #77Well that’s Rodgers seeming off the list then. If we get Luis Campos as DOF then I can see is going for Mourinho as they are good friends. Maybe not right now but potentially end of season if we get an interim in. Personally hope we don’t, Mourinho usually has fall outs with players and is another excuse specialist. Blaming everyone but himself, including throwing players under the bus. His conduct often leaves a lot to be desired. I just hope whoever we get in is a professional thought and through.
Rangnick I think did talk before about wanting to manage in the premier league. Maybe that’s changed now he’s gone more into a technical sporting type of role. Still could be tempting for him to have his shot at managing a premier league team.
