Newcastle have picked up a point in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace. The lads defended well overall but were put under enormous pressure all match. A moment of magic from Callum Wilson canceled out Benteke’s second-half strike. It was a dominant performance from the hosts who will rue their missed chances.
There were no changes after a scoreless first half. Newcastle enjoyed a rare bit of possession to start the second forty-five but couldn’t muster a shot.
Palace got their first opportunity of the second half just five minutes in. Conor Gallagher’s cross was met by the boot of an acrobatic Benteke. However, his shot was sent over the crossbar.
Benteke didn’t miss his next chance. After some brilliant play from Gallagher to keep possession, he laid the ball off to Tyreke Mitchell down the left. The fullback’s lofted cross was nodded past Darlow by the Belgian to give the hosts a 1-0 lead after 56 minutes.
Benteke almost added his second in the 62nd minute. Michael Olise’s cross was found the rising striker, whose header clipped the crossbar as Newcastle were scrambling to keep within touching distance.
Out of nothing, Newcastle leveled the match at 1-1 just minutes after Benteke’s effort. Ritchie’s corner was knocked back twice before Callum Wilson performed a terrific overhead kick for his fourth goal of the season.

Jones had readied Joe Willock and Miguel Almiron to come on before the goal. He decided to keep with the double substitution as Sean Longstaff and Ryan Fraser made way.
Benteke soon had another chance that he should have put away. A through ball was dummied by Odsonne freeing Benteke on a one-on-one with Darlow. However, the Belgian’s shot was wide of the target.
Jones made his final change in the 80th minute. Palace had resumed their ascendency after the brief spurt from Newcastle. Jones brought Joelinton on for Allan Saint-Maximin, who could just never get going all afternoon.
Palace seemingly took the lead late on a free header from Benteke. However, VAR alerted the referee to check the pitchside monitor. The goal was disallowed as Marc Guehi had fouled Clark in the box.
The lads were able to hold out for the draw but it wasn’t pretty. Newcastle offered precious little in attack but did defend marginally better. The job was to pick up a result to halt the slide before our next manager is appointed. We’ll take the point.

Somebody who uses Twitter wants more Geordies involved?
He must have his egos confused – that’s the sort of inanity one’d expect him to post on here!

Comment #45Also madness getting rid of players like Yedlin and Diame. They’re much better than what we have now. What was Steve Bruce thinking letting Yedlin go and signing Krafth?

Comment #48Electronic billboard for the Saudi GP at the Brighton game. Wonder how much Brighton are getting for that? I’m guessing they don’t have any issues with that Saudi association then.

Never said I was happy with Krafth’s performance. You insisted he was starting at RB when it was obvious to everyone else he was starting as a RCB.
That was my point.

Comment #51Didn’t see or listen to the match but we should be happy bringing a point home. How many times have we seen the lads’ heads go down when we’re behind? It appeared from the BBC text commentary that Jones was prepared to go for all three rather than sit back. I’ll be proved wrong when I see it on MoTD.

I wouldnt put it past them considering the way there going on with just the takeover, I do blame the premier league for our standing in the table and I also have a sneaky look at match day officals as well, the thing is if we are relegated I will accept it but when we come back they will suffer the most not us

I think we will get relegated as I can see us struggling to get rid of layers in Jan unless we terminate contracts
If we get relegated we will come back strong and stick it up them
Wouldn’t put it past them – My only worry is they band together pass some law and try and stop us getting promoted

Comment #59Longstaff again at fault for their goal, honestly don’t know how he gets selected, runs around a lot but does nowt.
Willock, Almiron and Fede for Fraser, Clark and Longstaff, then probably the best we can muster without Dummet but a much better drilled performance.
Krafth man of the match for me.

Player power and financials are king. Empty threat. Not like there’s not a whole world of talent out there too.
—————————–
Longstaff’s contract expires end of season, so yeah, everything to prove under a new manager.
I can’t see him making the grade without a drastic turnaround. Just don’t see the mental agility and technical ability required.
Those 9 matches 3 years ago now seem like a dream.
Only way he gets a contract is if we go down.

Comment #70Happy with the point the players certainly were putting a shift In:
The positives
Kraft and Manquillo chucking their bodies on the line
Wilsons goal oh ya beauty
The team were trying
Negatives
Weird formation and players out of position so not just Bruce !
Wilson and ASM not effective no real pressing efforts that will need to change under a new manager!
Why do we not pass it on the deck just hoofing it for no reason ? Palace who used to do the same Viera now has guys like Mcarthur and Benteke playing lovely 1 2 link passes
Almiron Willock Joelinton ASM and Wilson need to play together in a formation that suits their strengths figure that out and we will stay up

Next week – if we play anything like today it will be a cricket score against us.
Folk saying we need about 4 -5 new players in January probably should double their numbers.
A point is better than nowt – but when you look at out team they a really very poor. some crap players have been bought.

The Premier league are totally responsible for our league position because if they hadn’t delayed approval of the takeover, we would be well into the necessary team rebuilding by now and not struggling with a team of largely Championship players.
That’s not to say Bruce wasn’t directly responsible because he was, but with better players even he could effect an improvement!
