Jones Pleased With The Result But Admits There’s Work To Be Done

Newcastle picked up a point at Selhurst Park this afternoon. The performance was lacking in certain areas as the hosts dominated much of the match. Crystal Palace had 75% of the possession the bulk of the chances.

The lads defended very well in the first half limiting Crystal Palace to a few chances. The second half was a different affair as The Eagles could have put 4 or 5 into the back of the net.

However, as Newcastle fans are well aware, you have to take your chances or you can easily end up losing points. The aim for Jones and the lads was to pick up a result, and in the end, they did just that.

After the match, Graeme Jones spoke to the press. He thought Newcastle deserved to get something out of the match but conceded the performance was far from where he wants them to get. Here is some footage of Jones speaking after the game.

Jones was also asked about his team selection which had some notable omissions in Miguel Almiron, Joelinton, and Joe Willock. As far a Willock goes, Jones revealed he was resting the midfielder due to his lack of a pre-season and his recent toe injury.

This is what Jones said about the midfielder per Newcastle’s Twitter account:

“Joe Willock never had a pre-season. He’s been having an injection in his toe since before Watford. He missed a couple of weeks of training and taking an injection to play.

“He’s going to be a fantastic player for this club but he’s building his fitness up.”

If Jones gets a point against Chelsea then I’ll be even more over the moon than today.

    GJ on Joelinton:

“Joelinton has been excellent the last few weeks. Now he’s giving a level of performance I’ve said he needs to add goals. He’s got a good base, but today I wanted to play a front two and I think his best position is left wing which is why he didn’t start.”

Not so much of a bounce today, more like a dull thud. 🙁

Shame VAR didn’t make it on to the MoM vote. 😉

Still, happy with a point, could be the difference between Europa and Champions league come May. 😆

I googled it, Scythe. It was when Brighton beat Citeh earlier this year & Potter had to apologise to Pep over some remark he’d made.

    GJ on the performance:

“We have to improve. We have to be better, but I have to give the lads credit. Mentally, physically and tactically we were excellent, especially in the defensive aspect of the game. There’s lots of work to do but it’s somewhere to start.”

It doesn’t really matter if all the other clubs blackball us with their players, we can get all the players we want from the rest of the world. Many clubs need the revenue these days, including English clubs, silly buggers

    Graeme Jones on #CRYNEW:

“It’s a base for us to start. I want us to be better on the ball but that doesn’t happen overnight. We’ve concentrated on trying to shore up and not concede as many goals and I think that worked today.”

Man City’s away shirt has the words ‘Man City’ in big letters across the front. Looks weird. Never seen that before.

Really want us to get Lamptey. His pace and is fearless going forward is such a threat and would improve us. Don’t know how good he is at defending tbh but attacking wise he is a major threat.

Brighton making Man City uncomfortable and really going for it.

Why does every single team look better than us?? It’s Brighton against City ffs yet they still play well and going for it even if they’re losing 3-0.

You do worry the longer we leave it the harder it’s going to be to stay up

Especially if clubs do decide to not sell us players although that feels just like code to let us know there will be a premium to pay although what I would say to that is find out what players have release clauses and target them

The reason every other football team looks better than us is that they have owners and coaches with ambition.

NUFC had Ashley and all his yes men coaches.

    I think that explains it.

I wonder if today’s selection was to light a fire under some of the underperformers that GJ feels could make the difference.

Joelinton, Willock and Almiron dropped to show they need to perform more.

Boring but at least we were organised. If we’re gonna play like that we need Willock of last season to link up play.

Plenty of history to suggest SB is a beast of 2 faces, so it would be interesting to know his true feelings about today’s result.
Chuffed we got a point and pleased for GJ…or
Bitter that Jones the coach didn’t face plant in his absence.

I could see why Lascalles and Clark played against Palace because it was an aerial battle

But I think Fernández and Schar need to come back in they are better at dealing with nimble forwards and can pass it better which we will need against Chelsea

Fitness and confidence will improve I am sure given time. They have had way too many days off, training more will help build their fitness levels and their confidence will improve through time.
They need to get behind Jones first of all and get some self belief..

    ————————–Dubravka——————————–
    ————–Schar—Fernandez—Lascelles—————–
    Manquillo————–Hayden——————Lewis/Fraser
    —————-Willock————–Almiron———————–
    ——————————ASM————————————
    —————————–Wilson———————————

That would be how I would set the team up. ASM instructed to drift wide from that 10 position to create space for Wilson. Willock and Almiron to take turns in supporting Wilson and ASM. One goes, the other drops back in line with Hayden. Manquillo/Murphy and Lewis/Fraser to provide width in attack.

With Dummet fit you could play him LCB and Kraft RCB in a back three. That way you have a CB on each side capable of covering the flank meaning that the back 3/5 depending on how you look at it could transition to a back 4 when either wing back pushes up.

I wonder if Palace fans or an unbiased observer would agree that we deserved something from that. We were so much worse than them.

    Still, Wilson’s effort deserved something.

Why was Almiron left out? Strange decision. With him, Joel and Willock on we were a different team. No big damage done, Jones, but next time start them.

A good but lucky point. I,d like Lascelles and Ritchie and Clarke dropped all were awful today bring back Fernandez, Scharr and Lewis. Not sure whats happened to Lascelles but he offers little.
If we defend like that next week against Chelsea i don,t see them missing chances like Benteke today.

Two fingers up to press , PL6 and the jealous Gary Li- nackers

“Those who wish to support the club by wearing appropriate culturally-inspired clothing should feel free to do so as they see fit. We are inclusive to all.

“To reiterate what we said previously, neither the club nor its new owners were offended by attire worn, and appreciate the overt statements of support and acceptance by our great fans.”

I really think we should have won the game, not based on our terrible performance but in order to keep us in touch with teams above. We have a very tough schedule coming up so the new manager will have a hard task. Can’t see a first win coming before the Brentford match and by that time we’ll probably be many points behind.
We need a miracle win or 2nd half of the season or I think the rebuilding will have to start from the Championship on.

Also Lascelles, Clark, Krafth, Ritchie and Longstaff MUST be dropped. We need more peaceful and techical players instead of these slow bunch of hoofers.
ASM also very poor today. Cant remember him completing a single dribble.
Wilson, Almiron and Willock are our key players. We need better defenders soon.
