Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle 1 – Extended Video Highlights

Newcastle were second-best overall today at Selhurst Park, but at least we only conceded a single goal, and it was a wonderful equalizer from that man Callum Wilson – his second goal in as many games – that gave us a point.

The home side though had enough chances to win the game, especially their goalscorer Benteke.

But some stout defending and considerable luck that allowed us to come away with a point today – and we will take it.

And it seemed that Benteke had brilliantly headed in the winner after 86 minutes, but VAR over-ruled the goal – for whatever reason.

Well – we are a rich club now, of course.

But most of our players must improve their form before the end of the year, so we are well clear of the relegation zone come January.

At that time the new owners will hope to bring in around five players to strengthen the side for the remainder of the season.

Let us know who you think Newcastle’s best player was this afternoon in London.

Two fingers up to press , PL6 and the jealous Gary Li- nackers

“Those who wish to support the club by wearing appropriate culturally-inspired clothing should feel free to do so as they see fit. We are inclusive to all.

“To reiterate what we said previously, neither the club nor its new owners were offended by attire worn, and appreciate the overt statements of support and acceptance by our great fans.”

“We were so much worse than them.”

i think it looked that way more than i was because of our defensive counter attacking style.

there seemed to a long time between the disallowed goal being scored and celebrated and the commentators realising there was a VAR check. i can’t remember many instances as long as that.

we still have a short blanket and will with our current squad. we have over-achieved the last 4 years largely because of the pragmatic style of play Rafa played. it encouraged me that Jones straight away reverted to the all hands to the pump stop a goal at all costs approach. if you stay in a game you have a chance.

I think because we were so passive in closing them down they had the freedom to get passes into Bentekes feet far too much for me

Longstaff and Hayden were all over the place but not in a good way this formation doesn’t work for me long term also Fraser and ASM did nothing at all both of them need to be wide attacking the full back and getting crosses in

Fortunately benteke is a poor finisher

Don’t see this formation working at all. I think this team could benefit in going back to basics and a back 4 and possibly 442.

Due to the disastrous start this year we are going to have to take some big scalps to stay up. Like Chelsea next week. But if we don’t we’re still in good hands and will come back much stronger than last time. But we’re going to have to see a transformation as good as Watford’s today. We are soon going to find out if our squad is just very poor or average but badly managed. But whatever we have owners who will progress the club. It could just be a very difficult few years as everyone wants us to fail.

The blanket that Rafa had was a woollen one that’s been put in the wash at 60 degrees and spun dry.

Generally not a fan of back 5s unless you have ball playing CBs that can bring the ball forward.

That said, I sort of understand GJ’s logic with his back 5 because I think we struggle to put out a reliable back 4.

On the left we have Lewis who is a defensive liability or Ritchie who is makeshift.

A back 4 exposes that even more and it gets worse when you factor in that we dont have a solid CDM.

We also dont have the pace in CB positions to cover that gaping hole on the left hand side.

Then you have to think that we lack a right sided winger so this back 5 in theory allows us to create width through wing backs.

That was ASMs worst game for us, lost the ball every time he tried to dribble, good move by Jones to take him off.

Still every player is going to have a bad-un occasionally lets hope that was his.

Maybe our style was to counter attack, and totally give up the ball, as it has been for a while, but they had many more chances too. They will consider themselves unlucky, I’m sure. Hitting the post twice is unlucky.

I expect us to crawl our way to January, unless we can find what we did so right at Watford.

I know many bloggers want to see the back of a number of players.

The problem is that no other club will take them on. I suspect we will have to buy up the contracts of a few players before the end of December and let them leave as free agents.

How many of those who fellow bloggers want out have been played out of position by Bruceless and might yet redeem themselves under Jones.

Mind I do think that time is up for Shelvey at least if we want to turn things around in January.

For me ASM isn’t a no 10 or 2nd striker certainly not in this formation we don’t have width and centre backs just are on him straight away he has no space

He also doesn’t close down or have that no 10 vision for a through pass

If we are persisting with this formation Joelinton or Almiron would be better as that 2nd striker with ASM playing the wider role

But a change of formation would be a better option for me we need to play 2 out and out wingers to have proper width

Agree 100% If I was a palace fan i’d feel that was 2 points dropped. They looked far more balanced and threatening.

I was happy(er) to see us looking a bit more solid.

For me that was the difference between Bruce and Rafa. Under Bruce you never knew how many goals we were going to ship and teams could slice us open and destroy us. Under Rafa even when we looked uninspired you felt reasonable confidence that it was only going to be a narrow scoreline.

Our midfield is a big problem. The guys have poor workrate, poor pressing, poor marking, poor in possession, no creativity. Basically every aspect of our midfield is sub-par. I honestly think a good CDM and a loan for someone like Donny VDB would transform this team a fair bit. Take pressure off the back line and provide more than scraps for the front.

I do like the look of that Gallagher though. He’d got a good balance of being tidy on the ball and scrappy off it.

If Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Krafth and Fraser, genuinely are better options than Scharr, Fede, Willock, Miggy, Lewis and Joel, and Jones works with them every day, so maybe they are, even if I, who granted only sees twenty minutes of highlights and listens to the 90mins on the radio each week, don’t agree, then I think we are actually in quite a lot of trouble, and only three worse teams and January is gonna save us, and very probably not a new manager.

She does WorB but I’m a good ironer. We are going to need a very good manager to make something of this squad. Don’t think we can rely on January additions to save us as that will take time and we have 11 games until then. Games will have to be won pre Jan, I would say at least 3. Plus maybe 3 draws. That’s 16 points. I’d take that now.

Jane, Rafa’s short blanket ie you can pull it down to keep your feet warm, but the chest and shoulders are cold. Or you can pull it up to keep the shoulders warm but the feet are exposed.
This is analogous to a compact football team which only covers part of the pitch. So you can sit deep and defend the goal, but it is hard to score, or you can push up the field to pressurize the opposition and score, but you leave big spaces behind and risk conceding.
Bruce had a long blanket, but it was full of huge holes.

I often wonder if Bruce just went for the easier option of the senior guys because they don’t really need coaching and just kind of copied what Rafa did and muddled through

Whereas the other guys on your list need coached and a style drilled into them daily to perform at their best

Almiron for me should be right on the toes of centre half’s the full game a bit like Perez was closing off angles and not allowing anyone to walk through

It’s why you pay big money for pacey defenders because they allow the team to press and play nearer the opposition goal, having the pace to recover. Same with wing backs. Good ones like at Chelsea are actually in midfield or attacking. Our are scared too due to lack of cover at the back.

Yeah, top description @28 Chancel. I’d prefer us to play compact but higher up the pitch and more to our attacking strengths, because I think we have decent attacking players, and I like games with lots of goals and goalscoring opportunities, but clearly we have a problem in terms of depth and quality, and that is essentially why we are second bottom, although I think in reality we probably in terms of what we’ve gotten and what we’ve deserved so far we should be three or four points better off. We need to be well set up and well prepared for sure, and at it for the full 90, and we need a decent January window most of all.

Dummettini has always been a quality defender. Like I said earlier today, when he used to play LB in a 4, sure he wasn’t the best on the ball (but did improve), but he really did used to have that area on lockdown against pretty much anybody. Just has great defensive instincts, position and timing.

Shame that he finally started getting injuries galore the past couple of years after going his entire career with barely any.

He’s 30 now and contract up end of this season. Needs to get back and make an impression.

That stuff about the clubs not doing deals with us for their players is really unrealistic. Money talks and when you offer a player regular game time and more money his head will be turned and will probably want to come and make his feelings known. Also clubs will want the money we can offer.
