One of the critical areas we need to strengthen in January is the defense, and for some reason, our players are not playing as a cohesive unit, like they were when Rafa Benitez was here.
We did see a lot more fight from our players yesterday in the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park, under the direction of interim coach Graeme Jones, but the skill doesn’t seem to be there.
News today in the Sun that Conor Coady is now a target for Newcastle in January and the former Liverpool trainee would be an excellent addition to our squad.
But it will be extremely difficult to prise the 28-year-old away from Wolves, especially in mid-season.
The way to do it is to overpay for the players we bring in, and we may be forced to do that if we are near the relegation zone come the end of the year, which now seems possible.
We would hope the new manager would be able to turn things around before January, but nothing is certain in football.
It now appears our center-backs – Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez, Emil Krafth, and Fabian Schar are not good enough.
We have seen precious little of Fabian Scar this season, and the experienced Schar and Fernandez are probably our best two central defenders at the moment.
But they have hardly played together as a unit at Newcastle since Bruce arrived over two years ago.
Fabian can also play as a defensive midfielder, and maybe should be tried there to add some steel to the defense and midfield?
We also think that Martin Dubravka will have a positive effect when he returns from injury.
The Slovakian International commands the box more than Karl Darlow does, although Karl has shown himself to be a Premier League class goalkeeper while deputizing for Dubravka over the last couple of seasons.
We have conceded 20 goals in our first 8 games with 4 draws and both statistics are just not good enough.
The main requirement is to strengthen the defense (and midfield) and bring in another top striker who can do the job when Callum Wilson is injured.
What do you think?
