Newcastle Linked With Top Defender For January

One of the critical areas we need to strengthen in January is the defense, and for some reason, our players are not playing as a cohesive unit, like they were when Rafa Benitez was here.

We did see a lot more fight from our players yesterday in the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park, under the direction of interim coach Graeme Jones, but the skill doesn’t seem to be there.

News today in the Sun that Conor Coady is now a target for Newcastle in January and the former Liverpool trainee would be an excellent addition to our squad.

But it will be extremely difficult to prise the 28-year-old away from Wolves, especially in mid-season.

The way to do it is to overpay for the players we bring in, and we may be forced to do that if we are near the relegation zone come the end of the year, which now seems possible.

We would hope the new manager would be able to turn things around before January, but nothing is certain in football.

It now appears our center-backs – Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez, Emil Krafth, and Fabian Schar are not good enough.

We have seen precious little of Fabian Scar this season, and the experienced Schar and Fernandez are probably our best two central defenders at the moment.

But they have hardly played together as a unit at Newcastle since Bruce arrived over two years ago.

Fabian can also play as a defensive midfielder, and maybe should be tried there to add some steel to the defense and midfield?

We also think that Martin Dubravka will have a positive effect when he returns from injury.

The Slovakian International commands the box more than Karl Darlow does, although Karl has shown himself to be a Premier League class goalkeeper while deputizing for Dubravka over the last couple of seasons.

We have conceded 20 goals in our first 8 games with 4 draws and both statistics are just not good enough.

The main requirement is to strengthen the defense (and midfield) and bring in another top striker who can do the job when Callum Wilson is injured.

What do you think?

I suspect paying over the odds for players will become the norm for us.

    🙁

I’m at a family get together on wife’s side. I spent half of last night sticking up for the takeover, the Saudis, and the fair reasons we got shot of Bruce. It was like half her family had spent the last week listening to Amnesty and Talksport ffs.

I wonder imagine if the Ajax lads come in they will have plenty of targets in the Dutch and other European leagues that haven’t been mentioned by the media.

We haven’t got a DOF or a new manager so it beats me who the sources are telling the press we are interested in Coady or any other players.

    Pure fabrication me thinks.

Some good and concise points there,Ed. Hayden had been below his best for some time. Schar cannot defend, but may offer something in midfield. His distribution will certainly be better than the disappointing Longstaff. Kraft and Clark are not quality cbs. Has Fernandez regressed in training? Lascelles was slightly better yesterday.

All the transfer talk is pure speculation, as a previous poster has said.

Schar looked good defending for Switzerland who have a good defence, and they usually say he’s their key defender and also for Rafa. Maybe he’s just not been used very well.

CP were playing at one zillion mph yesterday and I thought we did bloody well to contain them as well as we did.

There was obviously a plan and the lads more or less stuck to it, as Jones said before the game every knows where they are playing.

OK CP could have got more goals, so could Spurs last week but that’s the nature of the game. We’ve had a couple of games where we should have scored more, there’s a sort of evening out there.

Most good new managers go for making their team hard to beat, the good stuff comes later. and that I reckon is Jones priority, thus making life a bit easier for any new guy.

Jones woul have either been told to steady the ship/ sort the defence or he’d have the brains to know without being told that was what is needed. I really think simply moving Shelvey out of the DM role and playing Longstaff and Hayden as proper DMs will make the defence instantly tighter. Dummet would make a huge difference over Clark and would solidify our LWB position. There’s little we can do about our wingbacks at the moment, except change Ritchie for Lewis which wouldn’t make a great deal of difference.

Ideally Jones can get these two tricky ties out the way, restore some confidence to a back three that have played almost two years with no support infront of them or to the sides of them for quite some time. Then the new manager can come in for our easier run. There are 3 home games to Brentford, Norwich and Burnley

Regan – 36! That is way too old. Would much prefer Coutinho at 29 years old.

I would take Modric in a heartbeat for a season or 2! Unbelievable player! Coutinho? Not so sure; something not right with him although he’s a very good player!

Surely we can find a place for Schar; and is Fernandez injured?
If there’s a problem with relationships they need to get over it. Schar is a top international (I know he’s a loose cannon at times) and Fedy is our best defender IMO so the sooner they’re in the squad the better!
From a tactical point of view I think we should try 4 2 3 1 with Callum up top on his own, flood the midfield!
