Jones Hopes Palace Represents A Solid Platform With Plenty Of Changes On The Horizon

As evidenced over the past two matches, the takeover has done little so far to affect matters on the pitch. Newcastle were again second best at Crystal Palace on Saturday after coming up very short against Spurs last weekend.

However, there were some slight signs of improvement at Selhurst Park. Graeme Jones implemented a plan to address the porous defense. While it wasn’t exactly played out to perfection, Newcastle held The Eagles to just one goal and snatched a point despite barely threatening Vicente Guaita in the Palace goal.

After the match, Jones was pleased with the result and commended his players for their off-the-ball work. He also conceded that the lads are nowhere near where they need to be but the point at Palace can be a platform to build on.

Speaking to NUFC TV, Jones said the following about the importance of Saturday’s point:

“Remember the boys are on the back of a few bad results so confidence has been affected.

“I hope today gave them belief, a bit of confidence back, and the platform to build on going forward.”

Jones will take charge of our next match against Chelsea at St. James’ Park next weekend. We’ll be very fortunate to get anything from that match. The aim will be an improved display, especially in possession, and hope for the best.

While the squad won’t be improved until January, Newcastle are narrowing in on some key additions. Interviews are underway for our new Sporting Director as well as our next manager. Hopefully, both positions will be filled before the international break next month and could be announced as early as this week.

Once those positions are occupied, there will likely be two plans of action. First to strengthen the squad in January to keep the club up this season. Then the long-term rebuild will get underway in the summer.

Newcastle’s winter targets are likely to be players with Premier League experience such as Burnley defender James Tarkowski and Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard. Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette has also been touted as a potential target.

All three are in the final year of their contracts and could theoretically be brought in at well below their value. Though I keep having to remind myself that money is no longer the giant obstacle it was previously.

As we reported earlier, The Sun’s Alan Nixon is claiming that Wolves defender Conor Coady is on the wanted list for January. Frank McParland, who is currently an advisor at Newcastle but in line for a senior role, is a big admirer of the 28-year-old England international.

McParland was Liverpool’s Academy Manager from 2009 to 2013. He oversaw Coady’s progression at Anfield as he rose through the Academy ranks. The 6’1″ defender only made 2 appearances with his hometown club before moving on to Huddersfield in 2014 and then Wolves a year later.

Coady signed an extension at Molineux a year ago which has him tied down to 2025. Nixon claims it would take a fee of at least £20m to land the Wolves skipper, though that seems on the low end.

Newcastle have 11 matches remaining until the squad can be strengthened. It will likely be slightly longer than that as we travel to St. Marys to face Southampton on January 2nd.

The focus in the interim is to get the best out of this squad. Graeme Jones has at least one more match to build upon. Then it will likely be our new manager to take the controls for Brighton at The Amex to start November.

After The Seagulls comes the third international break. That will be a crucial two weeks for the new manager to work with the squad. Hopefully, we’ll signs of improvement in November and December as the club prepares to strengthen in the New Year.

Living out in North Cyprus I’m fortunate I get to see every match live so I watched the game against Palace with a couple of mates.
Observations were similar as everyone else hard watch, worked hard had a lot of luck and great point ref blowing the whistle was sheer relief.
I was surprised with the team selection and it didn’t look great I think I was hoping for something like the Everton match when we won two nil, hard pressing, fast counter attacking, but the team at Palace didn’t have that.
At home next Saturday with the crowd bouncing maybe a little more on the front foot or at least the capability to counter attack.
So I’m going with the team I selected for yesterdays match and after seeing the team play yesterday I think I am comfortable with this diamond formation
    Karl Darlow
Javier Manquillo – Jamaal Lascelles – Federico Fernandez – Jamal Lewis
    Fabian Schär
    Joe Willock – Jacob Murphy
    Miguel Almiron
    Allan Saint-Maximin – Callum Wilson

When you watched some of the forward interplay between CP players yesterday, it highlighted our main problem.

Going forward (at the moment) we are not a cohesive unit. We rely largely on Wilson getting goals from 1 x decent cross per game or dead ball opportunity or ASM doing something magical.

We need to get our front players working as a unit, pass and move etc. Unfortunately ASM doesn’t yet quite fit this pattern, he’s a maverick, great to watch but often “pull your hair out” frustrating. That’s why he should be on the wing. In the middle, surrounded by opposition players, he doesn’t pass and move and inevitably gets the ball taken off him.

On the wing he’s got the room to beat a player or 2, then cross/pull back or shoot, depending on his position. This is his strength – not stuck in the middle surrounded.

Jarra..I would certainly play that team against some of the weaker premiership teams at SJP…but not against Chelsea!…we’d get torn apart and murdered on the break.

Hence the predicament GJ finds himself in…a point off Chelsea is like a win for us in our current situation, losing is expected…so do we try and get that point by playing attacking football…or do we try and get that point with a safer 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 or 4-5-1?

I don’t know the answer for sure, but I guess we’ll get more of the same we saw at Palace.

If we have a jumble sale it will be interesting to see who actually fetches a fee, and where they end up.

If you look at teams outside the expected bottom seven, probably only Wilson, Willock, ASM, Almiron, Longstaff, plus Dubs n Woodman and Lascelles would be wanted. They’d all move up, although we will keep these.

Scrappers in our mini-league such as Burnley and Watford probably would take Schar, Hayden, Fraser, Lewis and Darlow at low prices.

Clark, Ritchie, Gayle, Manquillo, Krath, Joelinton, Murphy, Shelvey, Fede, Hendrick, would all be going champo or abroad. Combined fee 0+ whatever Joelinton fetches. Not much, considering his wages. That lot would free up 450k a week roughly so expect some to accept free transfers, the others will prefer to pick up wages.

We may be surprised who the new manager sees qualities in that we don’t and who fits the system he has in mind and who doesn’t…let’s see what Fonseca says after he’s appraised the squad…he might want to sell ASM and Willock!…who knows!

i’m not against anything you say in this post and and i’m sure it will come, there is scope for improvement in a lot of our players with the right coaches / manager in place which could happen at any time by all accounts, but till January window opens were hardly in the position to pick and chose which points we deserve and which we don’t ,

My personal own opinion is nothing matters more than points till January ,

We have to protect our PL statues at all cost at the expense of everything else,

Now, the defence. Someone earlier today (or maybe yesterday) put up some great stats about our defence and it was absolutely clear for all to see, we are much better if Dummet is playing.

We simply must get this guy fit and back in the line up, with 3 at the back he has to be our left side CB. Paired with ideally Fernandez and Schar, it would make us much stronger.

I’m not averse to using Fernandez/Lascelles/Dummet and putting Schar into DM alongside Hayden or Longstaff (the better one from Rafa’s days, not the current one).

Old use Manquillo and Lewis as wingbacks and that would be the most solid base we could have, to then give the AM and forwards a chance.

My work is done, Amanda, sign me up 😆

I think we can declare you winner on this H2H. No chance of Jota outscoring TAA and Ronaldo combined. I needed Dias to keep a clean sheet yesterday and Brighton’s consolation goal scuppered that.

So we brush ourselves and go on to the next game…

I never said we didn’t deserve a point and tbh I never say that about any games. Like you I’m very happy we took a point away from home and agree 100% it’s about damage limitations from now until we can bring in new recruits. With saying that tho I truly believe there is better within this squad than what we have been seeing, we just need someone to drag it out of them.

IMO it’s imperative we get a new manager and new set up sorted as soon as we can. We need fresh ideas and better quality across the board to help drag us out of the current situation.

I don’t understand this concern about players coming in on big wages and upsetting the squad, as if that’s a foregone conclusion.

If we want players of a class we have not been able to acquire before we’re going to have to pay them £100-200k.

    It’s that simple.

Typically players commanding those kind of wages have done something to be able to command those wages, the vast majority of players here will understand that and anybody that doesn’t can lump it.

A player like Coady is already on about £10k more than our highest paid CB Lascelles. if we sign him that’ll become £50k more.

Current players all have the chance now to be able to tap into our ability to pay better, if they get their heads down and improve and secure a new contract, that’s how they ought to be looking at it.

I truly believe we have a top 10 squad.

They are currently, low on confidence, a bit shell shocked, low on fitness and lacking in organisation.

All of these are largely due to the Ashley/Bruce combo, sucking the lives out them as well as us.

Work on the fitness and organisation and we can start winning games, which will bring back the confidence and overcome the anxiety.

After that, as Sparky55 says onwards and upwards.

Was literally irreplaceable for them. He was the club in it’s then form.

I feel like even if Pep went there at some stage in the last 10 years, they’d be in a similar situation to now.

I’ve just noticed something, even great players sometimes make mistakes or misplace passes but they aren’t getting “groans” from the crowd.

If any of our players make a mistake, the groan can be heard 2 towns away!

Perhaps we should be more supportive and less critical, at least until we’re mathematically safe. 🙂
