Poll – How Will Newcastle Do Against Chelsea On Saturday?

Newcastle stopped the rot, so to speak, on Saturday with a point at Crystal Palace. However, the performance left a lot to be desired and the draw did little to help our dismal position in the league table.

There were some positives to take from the match. Graeme Jones used three days last week to implement his plan. While it didn’t play out to perfection, it was enough to get a decent result.

The poll for Palace has goalscorer Callum Wilson easily picking up the most votes for best player. The striker’s moment of magic in the second half was one of the few highlights for Newcastle fans on the afternoon.

The difficulty level significantly increases this weekend as the league leaders come to St. James’ Park. Jones will use this entire week to put his plan in place for Chelsea.

The aim will be to show signs of improvement over last weekend, especially in possession. A result would be a massive bonus as Chelsea will see three points as a must to keep Liverpool and Manchester City at bay.

Newcastle are in a holding pattern currently while a new manager and Director of Football are being recruited. Saturday may be Jones’s last match in charge as those two positions could be filled by next week.

He’ll be eager to keep things moving in a positive direction to keep confidence levels high. A defeat wouldn’t be the end of the world as long as some progress is shown on the pitch.

I’d be concerned if no managerial announcements made by end of this week. It will even start to put some of the candidates off as the message it would send out is ‘we like you, but not sure you’ll keep us up, so need to do more trawling’. Announcement Friday pm or Saturday pre match would be good.

Fair enough, you went with a draw. I like to see a bit of optimism to counter the pessimism. But who the hell were the 6 who voted for a win?!

    Show yourselves and be judged!!!

You said don’t worry about relegation. The squad is too good (rings a bell), the new coach will work his magic.

Hope so, though magic don’t exist, it’s just smoke and mirrors. I’m suspecting that our squad is actually worse than we think and it will, indeed, take magic, or a miracle, to quote another, for them to suddenly start dominating.

Solution? Deep pockets. January. Or else…

I can’t remember if they’ve actually come out and officially confirmed that Jones will be in charge of both the Chelsea and Brighton games, but if they have, that’s a good thing.

It tells anyone prospective managers coming in that their first game will be against Brentford after the international break. All of the cards are on the table and everyone knows where they’re at.

Talk of relegation this soon is a little silly. It’s not an impossibility that it’ll happen, but we’ve only played 9 games!

If there was only 9 games left to play then I’d be worried. There’s LOTS of time and points available to turn this around. Even if we get a new manager and he can’t turn the tide, then there’s even still time to dump him and get someone else. We could have two bits at the cherry with 29 games still to be played from today onwards.

Our ground game in defence was pretty solid against Palace.

Was only really Benteke’s aerial prowess and power which caused most issues and with Lukaku out they don’t have that physicality.

On that basis I’d stick with the same back 5 as much as I’d like to see Fernandez come in.

Midfield needs major surgery. We played 3 with Sean central and deepest and he got smothered and doesn’t anticipate the game well enough. Play Schar there, naturally confident on the ball, more likely to pick out a telling pass and he’s plenty combative.

Fraser out for Almiron simply because he’s better suited in that position to help Ritchie out with James and to intercept, pressure the ball and spring counters.

Up front go with Joelinton and Wilson. Gives us the best chance of the ball sticking on occasion, Joe can do more of the back to goal stuff while Wilson concentrates more on breaking the defensive line and running the channels.

ASM to come on for 20-30 mins against tired legs if we’re still in the match.

5 days solid drilling an XI and some special attention to set-pieces. Who knows, might pinch a point.

Scythe; It will be 10 games without a win after Saturday. We will have 28 games to get around another 35 points. That will require a huge turnaround.
Relegation at this stage is more than just a possibility.

Jones will probably go for consistency and will likely use the same players, unless someone is outstanding in training, especially as we are playing the CL champions / league leaders. Presumably match fitness will over ride rotating anyone, but who potentially failed to secure their position in the next match?
Will the formation stay the same or will Jones move to a 541 or similar?

If we stick with 532 against Chelsea then the midfield will need to be stronger and Frasers was obviously out of position. It is difficult to critice ASM as he is one of our top players, but I feel he would benefit from coming on as a sub. Also IMO whilst Ritchie is a motivating player to the rest of the side, he does struggle against the top sides and we could do with seeing Lewis start. However, coming in fresh against Chelsea is not at all positive and that goes for other players like Schar and Shelvey.

So, depending on his toe the most likely of incoming players would be Willock, along with Joelinton, Almiron and Murphy. I would very much like to see Murphy starting further up the pitch as a winger and Fraser or Almiron could start on the left. It would not be the first time that Wilson has started on the bench, despite Joelinton not showing any further sides of being a striker, but if Gayle shows up in training he could make a surprise start.

A win would be extremely unlikely and I believe major changes will be as equally unlikely, but the starters at Palace hardly made changes impossible.

The consortium going from wanting Rafa to head their new venture, the ultimate pragmatist, to Fonseca on the other end of the spectrum being a pure ideologue, makes no sense when you step back.

I think we have a very ordinary group of defenders and so hold little hope for us against Tuchel’s Chelsea, who are essentially a top notch squad impeccably prepared.

I think the new owners will be increasingly hating Ashley’s guts now, as they realize just from how low a base they are starting.

I use our very ordinary collection of defenders as a surrogate for the poor state of the club across the board of course. Ashley, Barnes, Bishop, Charnley and Bruce are all to blame, rotters.

It’ll probably be a flat back five of…..
    …………………………..Darlow.
    Manquillo…Krafth…Lascelles…Clark…Ritchie.

    Only Norwich send out worse.

In front of them, honestly, sit ASM out, he won’t defend effectively, and they’ll swarm all over us. Bring him on for the last 20-30 if we are still in it.

    ……….Miggy….Willock…..Longstaff…..Joel.
    …………………………..Wilson.

I think on balance this is our best 11, when fit….

    …………………….Dubravka.
    Manquillo…..Schar…..Fede…….Dummett.
    ………………..Willock…..Longstaff.
    ……..St Max………Miggy……………Joel.
    ………………………….Wilson.

I think that 11, and formation, well prepared, is better than 7 or 8 other teams in this league, bur Chelsea would still probably tear it apart.

I’ve already put my money on Favre last week, but if I put any more in now it would be going on Martinez.

His post-match interview Italy vs Belgium – it was put to him about interest in the job and his response was the standard professional stuff, but his face told a different story.

Jones presence, told he has a long-term future here and providing that bridge, getting Martinez up to speed.

He’s done all he can with Belgium, their time is up. World Cup is too late for their ‘golden generation’. Not really failed, semi-finals is about what I’d expect from that squad of 3 or 4 world-class players because the supporting cast aren’t as good as the French, English, Italian and Spanish.

PL experience will have some weight, whether we think it should or not.

Probably crossed paths with McPartland from his time at Everton.

    Evening All

Wow it takes a log time to catch up on the blog these days, i see everyone has their views on what manager they would like as our new manager, i think its a good thing the new owners are taking their time as its so important to try and get it right. My preferred choice would be Rafa Benitiz all day long, i just think he is best suited to stabilize the club and help with the rebuild going forward, and also i personally think he is the man who would more or less gaurantee our position in the premier league next season, i know there is no gaurntees in life but you get my drift, then in a couple of years Rafa can step aside and take up another job at Newcastle where is experience and knowledge of football will be a huge assist to our club going forward.
