This Midfielder Would Be A Terrific January Signing For Newcastle – But Can We Get Him?

Newcastle have been linked with Southampton captain and central midfielder James Ward-Prowse for a January move.

Ward-Prowse is just the type of player Newcastle should be after, but it’s got to be a long shot to get him in January, or even next summer.

But Newcastle have the finances and the exciting project to entice any player to Newcastle.

Aston Villa were after him in the summer, and the Saints protected their investment by having the Portsmouth-born player sign a new contract – a good move by Southampton.

The contract is through June 2026, for a player who joined the Saints as an 8-year-old.

The news comes from Football Insider.

Aston Villa’s bid of £25M was turned down by Southampton, and he’s even worth more than that to Newcastle.

So it will be interesting to see how the Saints react to a higher bid in January, and of course, James would be offered higher wages on Tyneside.

The Newcastle central midfield needs to be strengthened as much as the defense in January, and we could see some players come in on loan to strengthen the side.

Newcastle would be willing to pay big loan fees to accomplish that.

James Ward-Prowse is a proven Premier League player and has surprisingly been capped only 9 times for England but 31 times for the England U21 side.

A perfect player for the new Newcastle United, but can we lure the player who was born and bred on the south coast to come to Newcastle.

Certainly playing for a high-profile club like Newcastle United would help his England International career.

We don’t see much chance of getting James in January, but he would be a great signing for us this summer.

What do you think?

    Catchy

The best managers will also realise when something isn’t working in a game and will change things to sort that problem out. Putting your best 11 on the pitch and expecting every game to go exactly the same is foolish. You can make sure you have your preferred starting 11, your strongest side who may deal with 90% of the teams they come up against. But you won’t beat everyone that way, you have to make changes pre game and during the game.

Look at Pep and Man City this season. One week he’ll have the likes of Gundogan, Mahrez and Sterling in the starting line up. Then next week he’ll have Rodrigo, Foden and Bernado Silva.

I agree with what you say to a degree, but I think the best managers absolutely do their research on others teams and will be willing to adjust their tactics, including starting 11 accordingly.

It’ll cost £60/70M and imo he’s not worth that outlay just yet.

The obvious move would be to get him

The bad move would be to get Ramsay from Juventus on 200/300k a week!!

    Just caught up.

From previous article, whenever I see a picture of the training ground entrance I think, hmm, 1950’s MOD weapons research centre.

Maybe it is and that’s why we’re shite!

JWP is exactly what we need atm. Quality, with experience of the league and a bit of grit when needed. Ultimately he is what I would describe as a transitional purchase, improves what we have but relatively low risk and can be upgraded once we are out of the mire and progressing up the league in a year or 2 when marquee players will come for reasons other than vast sums of cash being chucked at them

I’d only pay 30 million with add ons for JWP, he’d be a decent buy at that price but not at 50 million

Don’t see how ward prowse constitutes a better option than lingard who is in the final year of his contract (this relatively cheap) and a proven game changer ( as evidenced by his West Ham showing last year)

Ward prowse is slightly above average Imho
Not good enough for a top 6 team hence nobody besides villa has bid for him

Overhyped and overpriced in my view

    I wouldn’t even bid 30 m for him
    We can do much better
For that kind of money we could get Orel mangala a world class central midfielder who’s also younger

Ramsey I would go for as he is a game changer and would positively impact our relegation fight

His wages aren’t a big deal if the transfer fee is low (juventus only want About 15m euro for him)

WLtoon – I don’t want Rafa back either. I think he was great engaging with the fans while he was here but I don’t think he plays the kind of football most of us would like to see and I wouldn’t have much respect for him if he breaks his contract with Everton to join us. It’s not as if he’s a Geordie and this is his dream job, he’d just be joining for the money. Thanks Rafa but no.

Didn`t realise JWP was contracted until 2026, in that case Saints would probably want a shed load of dosh for him, they would want to rip our eyes out for more than 50M so i think nah, look elsewhere.

Lingard had his best season ever at West Ham and he was trying to get into the euros squad

He’s been poor before that there was reasons he wasn’t getting game time

Also sometimes it seemed he was more interested in social media stuff than football

I would take him but there could be a danger he could be one of those that down tools once he gets a big contract

Same with Delli Alli and a few others just got to make sure we get the right characters

Id have Ramsey all day long.

Still a top player in a position we desperately need, proven in the Prem, bags of international and big game experience, an influence in the dressing room and probably still got two good years in him.

A no brainer for under £20M.

Mund wardprowse and Ramsey are similar
    Both can play cm/am
Ramsey is on record as saying number 8 is his best position
Only difference is Ramsey is far superior

    Orel mangala is pure class

Jail – I’m sure there will be plenty of decent value signings that we can now attract to the project but I don’t see a problem with forking out big money for true quality. We should get Lingard for good money but unless there’s a player of JWP’s quality with proven experience that we could get cheaper, I’d sign him in a heartbeat, even for £50m. I’d hope he would cost a bit less though…£30-40m.

Is it a no brainer for Ramsay though? He’s hardly done well for Juventus has been injured loads!?

Ward Prowse has played 102 games in a row remarkable fitness has Ramsay played 10 games in a row in years?

He is a quality player when fit but he is currently on 400k a week at Juventus

Can’t deny Ramsey is a quality player and would love to see him here. JWP would be an excellent addition tho and would add just as much quality and improve the centre of midfield.

Can’t wait for the day we will bring in quality youngsters and see them develop here.

You mentioned FFP earlier and thinking about the proposed (anti-NUFC) rules the EPL clubs want to introduce, I see the club’s been invited to be part of a working group to discuss them. I hope Charnley’s not the one to represent the club’s interests!

But, if the anti-NUFC are looking at an FFP system for the Prem, the so called big six could be disadvantaged in European competitions – unless FFP rules are introduced Europe and world-wide.

If there are to be changes to FFP rules, they surely must start at the top – not at EPL level?

Ooooh…Deli Alli??? No idea what’s going on in his life to make him go off the boil but if the people truly in the know speak to him and feel he just needs a fresh start, I’d love someone like him! Of course if he has a longer term issue like an injury or personal stuff that is affecting his game, no thanks.

Ramsey though? Nah. Seems to get injured a lot and his wages are HUGE. Would really disrupt the rest of the team with wages like that.

Delli Alli has been poor for a few years now under multiple managers even at his best he was still struggling to get the numbers Ward Prowse has in goals and statistics in a much better team at the time

His character has been questioned for quite a while now hence why he’s miles away from the England squad

When you really sit back and think about it, I think signing players like Coutinho, Koulibaly, Bale, Lacazette et.al would be a mistake.

Same with players who are constantly injured such as Ramsey and Dembele. I think as much as they might be exciting we have to be smarter than that. Unless they can be got for a steal and the wages weren’t exorbitant, which is so unlikely.

Irish – I think with all of those players you mentioned, it’s about their motivations. Without knowing them personally, I don’t know that their motivations are and what they want to do in future. Gotta hope we get in a decent DoF and manager who are more focused on getting players who will be right for the future of NUFC than just boosting their own profile because they signed a big name.

Jail.. To my eyes JWP is the type of player whom it wouldn’t surprise me if we got for £30M but could also go for as much as £50M. I think realistically that has to be the very top end of his valuation surely.

I think if they could settle on something under or close to 50M then its probably fair business by both sides. I couldn’t see them rejecting something close to that, but you never know I guess.

Everton signing James was quite an eye opener on the ball he did show quality when he first came but his application was horrendous

He also didn’t like the physical side of the game that you get in England

I seen an interview with Messi the other day and he is complaining about how much more physical the players are in France!! Could you imagine him dealing with the players we have here?!

Tdf exactly those are the kind of players I’d worry about motivation wise. But also fitness and injuries have to be a huge concern if not an even bigger concern for a few of them.

Even players like Lingard I’d be very weary of buying outright, I would snap him up on loan in a heartbeat. We see all too often players performing on loan when they have something to prove and as soon as a club buys them, they become a shadow of themselves.

JWP, seasoned EPL pro with good attitude and doesn’t break down. Just the sort of player we need to get to safety this season and provide a springboard beyond. If it takes 40 – £50M to get him out of his long-term contract, go for it.

Not sure why this is an either/or discussion…we’ve got so much money why not get both in!

I think Ramsey is an allround better player than JWP, but Ramsey is always injured…thats why he’s up for sale.

No point having great players who rarely play, whereas JWP is Mr dependable ..very fit, scores goals and a great team player.

On balance I think JWP would be the better investment right now but buying both should not be ruled out.

    Onwards and upwards

    Sheikh rattle and bank-roll:)
