Simon Francis played 295 times for Bournemouth from 2011-2020, under Eddie Howe, and knows all about Howe’s training methods, and what he demands from his players.
Simon is now the assistant first-team Technical Director at the Bournemouth club, who are currently top of the Championship table: and Simon often appears in the media these days.
He has kept in touch with both Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson since they joined Newcastle, and found out that the two players wanted the Newcastle players what to expect from Howe in training, and boy – was that true last week.
Howe told our players we train as we play – and he wants and demands his players to go all out in training and no resting against goalposts or sitting on the ball during an Eddie Howe training session.
🙂
This is what Simon has told Premier League Productions, as reported in the Chronicle today:
“I think there will be a positive influence within there but, ultimately, it will be about Eddie in the first couple of weeks.”
“If he can get performances out there on a matchday from the training ground and get all the players buying in in that short period of these two weeks even, I think that’s going to be very important.”
“Maybe it’s a little bit easier for him going into a football club when he knows a couple of the players already and they can help mix within the group so I think it’s a positive all round.”
“I speak to Matt Ritchie and Callum quite a lot,”  “It’s funny, a lot of players who leave Bournemouth or stop working under Eddie Howe go into football clubs.”
“And they realize training is not as intense or they’re not getting as much out of training and you see that reflected on a matchday as well.”
“They’ve been telling the lads, ‘Look, if Eddie does get this job, be ready to work hard in training because that’s what it’s going to be about’. “
“I think the last few days have been that.”
“The new players have bought into it. They’ve been excited by it. They’ve enjoyed training more than anything and Matt Ritchie and Callum will be that sounding board for the dressing room.”
“I think there will be a positive influence within there, but, ultimately, it will be about Eddie in the first couple of weeks.”
“If he can get performances out there on a match day from the training ground and get all the players buying in in that short period of these two weeks even, I think that’s going to be very important.
“Maybe it’s a little bit easier for him going into a football club when he knows a couple of the players already and they can help mix within the group so I think it’s a positive all round.”
The training has looked difficult and intense for our players, and that’s good.
Our players have not been fit enough so far this season, so we are hoping on Saturday at home to Brentford we can get all 3 points.
When Steve Bruce was here, he gave the players too many days off – that will not happen under Eddie Howe.
And one thing we will see on Saturday is a rejuvenated starting eleven who will be well organized by Howe, and keep on the front foot for the whole 90 minutes.
Comments welcome.

The next 6 weeks should really allow Howe to assess who will buy into his way of doing things and improve their game and who just needs to move on. I’m really crossing my fingers for Joelinton as I love his attitude. Also hoping he’ll get more from the likes of Schar and Lewis as I enjoy their style of play too.
It will take time to review all elements of the club and have a plan. We need to be patient as the new owners were surprised at the speed this moved when it happened. They will have had a provisional plan 18 months ago but things change and it will have needed to be totally reviewed and revised. I’m expecting change at every level though.
Who else is excited to see who Howe will start??

Comment #14What we need is something from the club, to get our teeth into the discussion.
You know, announce the DoF or show the plans for the new training and Academy complex, or announce a new sponsorship deal or that the SD will be down before Saturday.
Just one (or all) of the above and we’ll be buzzing again. It’s the old vacuum scenario again. There’s really nothing to talk about so we talk about anything.
Not much longer, honest. 🙂

Comment #17I’m a bit gutted for Derby they’ve been royally shafted. As Mund mentioned on the previous thread, the slimy 6 what punishment did they receive?
The only good thing that may potentially come out of this is when the mackems miss out on promotion this season they have another strong team in their league to contend with 😉

Comment #18The PL punishment is always £££ for clubs.
Maybe if we want the dirty 6 to face the music we need to get them relegated.

Derby are facing the prospect of relegation from the Sky Bet Championship after accepting a 21-point deduction. The club’s administrators agreed another deduction of nine points, plus a further suspended three points, for historical financial breaches under former owner Mel Morris

Comment #22I’ve not looked into the exact details but Derby have done what Barca have basically.
Expect only £30m mind.
How many points were Barca deducted?
It’s seems harsh to say the least and never seems to happen to the clubs you’d think deserve it.

Comment #23Don`t know if anyone is aware that the terrorist who blew himself up in Liverpool was wanting to be at the memorial service at Liverpool cathedral, where there were thousands attending, myself and partner included.
The bomb went off at 10.59 AM , if it was not for the quick thinking of the taxi driver, who said the passenger looked extremely suspicious and was carrying a package, there could of been absolute carnage.
The driver deserves huge praise and some sort of recognition for his actions.
I for one salute him.

Comment #24Off topic, I’d give most anything to know the results of those Bleep tests. Love to know who’s cutting the mustard and whos not.
I’m surprised a fan hasn’t filemed them from the fence around back. It would be something A LOT of people would watch.

Derby are a decent club with a respectable fan base. Gutted for them. Good thing for the I cannot see MA going there now (if he was interested?)

Comment #30Still no word of a DoF. Wasn’t the rumour we were going to appoint one during this international break and before the Brentford game? Still nothing. We need one in place now before January. Emenalo is available and is a great choice, we were inpressed by him so what on earth is going on?
