Tindall Touches On The Positives And Negatives Of Saturday’s Performance

Jason Tindall has spoken to NUFC TV after Newcastle’s 3-3 draw at home to Brentford. His reaction is a mixed one as he’s pleased with the performance but realizes a draw does little to help Newcastle’s league position.

On the positive side, Eddie Howe and his coaching team have had just ten days to work with the squad. We saw a significant improvement in the performance from the rest of this season.

While the defensive problems were still on full display, the lads looked lethal on the ball and caused Brentford problems all afternoon long. Newcastle edged the possession while launching 23 shots, 9 of which were on target.

One of the focuses during the past few weeks has been on set plays. Newcastle won 8 corners, including one in the first minute. It was from a corner that Newcastle took an early lead through Jamaal Lascelles.

However, that didn’t last long as The Bees stormed straight down the pitch for the equalizer. It was a mistake from Karl Darlow that allowed for the immediate response from the visitors.

The match was end to end which the supporters at St. James’ Park ultimately were thrilled with. While the result was disappointing, there was a lot in that performance to provide some hope that maybe Newcastle are close to turning the corner.

Tindall was asked about the impact the past few weeks had on today’s performance. The assistant head coach was very pleased that two goals resulted from the extensive work put in at the training ground.

This is some of what the 44-year-old had to say:

“We’ve tried to implement as much of our philosophy on the team as possible in such a short space of time. You aren’t going to be able to cover everything you want to cover. You’ve got to try to lay down your philosophy as quickly as you can.

“Set plays are a big part of what we do. We see it as a big threat. I’m really pleased that we scored the first goal from a set play.

“The equalizer to make it 3-3 was also from the training ground with our wide player overlapping and a great ball from Ryan. It’s pleasing when things come off like that.

“We’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do. We’ve done a lot of good work and I think you’ve seen that come out today with a good performance. I think it’s a big step forward but we still know there’s more to come.”

Unfortunately, there was an ugly side to this display. There is still much work to be done in a short amount of time if Newcastle are going to survive this season. The defending again was just dreadful.

Tindall was asked about the goals that were conceded and responded as follows:

“I think every aspect of our game needs to be worked on. We know how difficult it is to keep clean sheets, especially in the Premier League. But it’s something we need to aim for.

“We are disappointed with the goals that we conceded today. Too many individual errors, looking back throughout the season, that we need to eradicate.

“It’s a team game and everyone is responsible for that. It’s our duty as coaches to work with the players on the training ground to make them the best they can be and try and put that right.”

Putting the result aside, there were more positives than negatives in the performance. Unfortunately, Newcastle have an even steeper hill to climb with results not going our way around the league.

Well said apart from blaming individual errors. For future reference, don’t do a Mourinho in his decline.

United we stand united we fall.

Great offensive display but again poor defence and goalkeeping let us down. Those areas must be improved. Obviously you can only win by scoring more goals than the other side.? I think looking at arsenal today we might get something from that game.

And give yourself less credit, more to the players. Eventually, it’s your gain.

For the formation Howe played today you need two engines in CM!

    Two Kantes ideally.

I can see Ritchie making way for Fraser or Lewis I’m next game, Ritchie works hard, if he had another half a yard he’d be lethal.

We’re going to be wide open playing Shelvey, don’t think playing Hayden is the answer.

I don’t think the juice is worth the squeeze when Shelvey is involved.

He can’t get back, most of his opposite numbers are more mobile and quicker, if anyone gets past him, he’s not catching them!

The simple ball is more often the most effective, especially when combined with runners and good movement.

As expected defending was shocking. We will be easier on the eye but too easy to play against, expect Howe to be sacked by Easter!

    Jail

    He finished 2nd last season.

Nd you should talk , Rafa is the worst manager NUFC has had for long long time. His record is build of the back of good managers that were at clubs before him.

Everywhere he has been he leaves carnage

I think the way forward in January is high profile loans that need game time to try and force and England spot for the WC. I honestly don’t think we’re attractive to a Tarowski/Lingard anymore who can both simply wait until May and get a big money move elsewhere. What we won’t be hampered by is baulking at the loan fees, we’ve been put off the likes of Tammy Abraham, Loftus Cheek etc because we wouldn’t fork out at least that’s not a problem now. There must be plenty of players across Europe who aren’t getting game time and need to put themselves in the frame for Qatar. There are also players that we could sign that would probably accept a year in the championship to guarantee game time, Nat Phillips of Lpool or Rob Holding at Arsenal. I’d like to think that the DoF’s we are interviewing are already doing their homework on us and will be able to get to work as soon as they come in.

I’m not sure on Ritchy and Max playing on same side/wing,s they seem to ignore easy passes to each other and sometimes cost us possession. Not saying they cost us the game, but we need to create as many chances as we can, and Max played a good game but if he’d have passed to Ritchy on the overlap we’d have had a few more crossed into Wilson and Joe. If Ritchy had of passed to Max at certain times he’d of had better chance of taking the last man on and being one on one… still happy with the performance though, gutted we didn’t win.

Surely OGS has to step down rather than wait to get sacked, imo that was the players asking for him to be replaced, it’s as though they’ve had a meeting and said look it’s one defeat to sacrifice, if we don’t we are going to be getting beat off our rivals for the rest of the season.

No, I’m mentally preparing for the championship, it would be against all odds if we stayed up and our get out of jail free card which was a vast war chest is no longer a valid option imo.

We need some one, anyone who can tackle, and win the ball, and Shelvey was great today, definitely needs someone better than Willock beside him he has been anonymous since he came back, five at the back again, when we could have had maybe had Hayden in there. And where the hell is Fernandez? Has be done something wrong?

Jarra mick… Really!! We’d have went down under Bruce looking poor and no moral at all… We’ve now got a manager that wants to win and doesn’t want to “tick along”. It’s been one game and we looked decent. End of season is a long way off yet… And I recognise we’re in the brown stuff, but even if we go down, this is still the start of something huge for us. We will get there eventually,. How many people would have took relegation and a fresh start without Ashley.

Jail, the Manchester players always get their managers sacked, they do it time and again, OGS was an hopeless choice for manager, but let’s hope he’s still there when play them. Hopefully our defense will have improved.

    Stay up someone asked
I cannot see us staying up defence cannot keep a clean sheet and midfield does not give any or little cover
Cannot see us winning before the new year and that takes in the Burnley and Norwich game – maybes the Everton game last of the year.
By that time we will be well adrift
