Tindall Touches On The Positives And Negatives Of Saturday’s Performance

Jason Tindall has spoken to NUFC TV after Newcastle’s 3-3 draw at home to Brentford. His reaction is a mixed one as he’s pleased with the performance but realizes a draw does little to help Newcastle’s league position.

On the positive side, Eddie Howe and his coaching team have had just ten days to work with the squad. We saw a significant improvement in the performance from the rest of this season.

While the defensive problems were still on full display, the lads looked lethal on the ball and caused Brentford problems all afternoon long. Newcastle edged the possession while launching 23 shots, 9 of which were on target.

One of the focuses during the past few weeks has been on set plays. Newcastle won 8 corners, including one in the first minute. It was from a corner that Newcastle took an early lead through Jamaal Lascelles.

However, that didn’t last long as The Bees stormed straight down the pitch for the equalizer. It was a mistake from Karl Darlow that allowed for the immediate response from the visitors.

The match was end to end which the supporters at St. James’ Park ultimately were thrilled with. While the result was disappointing, there was a lot in that performance to provide some hope that maybe Newcastle are close to turning the corner.

Tindall was asked about the impact the past few weeks had on today’s performance. The assistant head coach was very pleased that two goals resulted from the extensive work put in at the training ground.

This is some of what the 44-year-old had to say:

“We’ve tried to implement as much of our philosophy on the team as possible in such a short space of time. You aren’t going to be able to cover everything you want to cover. You’ve got to try to lay down your philosophy as quickly as you can.

“Set plays are a big part of what we do. We see it as a big threat. I’m really pleased that we scored the first goal from a set play.

“The equalizer to make it 3-3 was also from the training ground with our wide player overlapping and a great ball from Ryan. It’s pleasing when things come off like that.

“We’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do. We’ve done a lot of good work and I think you’ve seen that come out today with a good performance. I think it’s a big step forward but we still know there’s more to come.”

Unfortunately, there was an ugly side to this display. There is still much work to be done in a short amount of time if Newcastle are going to survive this season. The defending again was just dreadful.

Tindall was asked about the goals that were conceded and responded as follows:

“I think every aspect of our game needs to be worked on. We know how difficult it is to keep clean sheets, especially in the Premier League. But it’s something we need to aim for.

“We are disappointed with the goals that we conceded today. Too many individual errors, looking back throughout the season, that we need to eradicate.

“It’s a team game and everyone is responsible for that. It’s our duty as coaches to work with the players on the training ground to make them the best they can be and try and put that right.”

Putting the result aside, there were more positives than negatives in the performance. Unfortunately, Newcastle have an even steeper hill to climb with results not going our way around the league.

7 games to the half way point and even at 1 point a game that will put us on 13 points then we buy 4/5 quality players in Jan and 1.5 points per game second half of season will give us 41/42 points
    Easy achievable in my view

Just got back as my original train was cancelled absolutely wounded and then the next one was rammed like sardines squished together.

    What an atmosphere tho, amazing!

Gutted we didn’t get the win and based on play I thought we deserved it.

Big Joe my MOTM but let himself down at the end when he should of hit it with his right foot. Shelvey ran all over which was a pleasure to see. Lots of hard work needed and definitely a change in the line up.

Darlow was dreadful and we need Dubs back ASAP

    Onwards and upwards

Easily achievable, it’s ridiculous to be expecting us to be relegated already.

By all means be worried as its a possibility but it’s by no means a forgone conclusion.

Today could turn out to be a excellent point as come the end of the season Brentford will be at bottom of table.

OP, ha ha, honestly he was very good today, his passing spot on. I would say if he was crap, I have before, even then there is no one else, my god Longstaff when he came on.

I think shelves can play his part if he has a couple of grafters alongside him but I agree he can be a liability when we don’t have the ball

I think to put a little perspective on today.

Obviously darlow had a ooor game and made some mistakes that you’d expect a decent keeper to save.

    But

Toneys first touch five goal 1 was sublime.

And the delivery for Brentford’s second was also world class.

You break it down and factor in toneys goal line clearance etc the margins were slim. A tiny bit of luck and we could’ve ended up with a win

I think us and Brentford were pretty evenly matched. Entertaining game for sure

    Brilliant day super game
Entertainment and effort passion and endeavour from min 1 to min 90
Our forward play was sensational and should have been enough to win comfortably but it also exposes our real issue central defenders that are simply not good enough and a controller in central midfield
Willock was poor and lacked the composure neededvbut hey onwards and upwards gave it a proper go

    Going forward he was great.

When Joelintin Ritchie ASM and Murphy are getting back to defend before 1 of your midfield pair it’s a worry.

For me he has exactly the same problem Ritchie does, he’s not athletic enough anymore, zero pace.

No good In a modern midfield when you have to get back and help.

To get the best out that system and set up I wouldn’t play Shelvey Wilock or Ritchie.

If you went past Shelvey you’d outrun him! 😉

Brentford’s 3rd goal followed Darlow’s hesitancy. after he failed to come out and collect their attack continued until they scored.

St Maximim really is world class. the run towards the end where he setup Joelinton was amazing. when Joelinton messed up and fell over St Max turned towards the crowd, threw his hands in the air in despair and sat on the ground.

    ASM is NOT world class!

He was in several positions today to make similar passes and didn’t see or try one of them!

Sooner he starts getting his head up and playing as a team player, sooner he’ll become WC.

First match in ages where it felt we cared and we were going for it. To see the difference that the new coaching team have had, look here: https://www.newcastleworld.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/the-positive-statistics-for-eddie-howe-to-build-on-despite-newcastle-uniteds-brentford-disappointment-3465597

Now we should be having these type of statistics previous, if not better, against the likes of Brentford at home. But we all know it has not been that way. Hopefully we continue this improvement over coming weeks.

The lack of a win btw, was down to Darlow primarily, and a bit of the rest of the defence – not Joelinton. Yes, in hindsight, he should have got his shot away on his right but he didn’t. We should have been winning at that point anyway not chasing a winning goal.

Joe does need to look at footwear though. He slipped like that very early in first half too. I predict that could be Darlow’s very last game for the club.

Atmosphere was good. Brentford fans had a good voice too.
Just spent half the match thinking why is Lascelles or Schar not really getting into Ivan Toney (properly) to let him know he is in a game. Gave him far too much space

    Really good watch.
We suddenly Look a decent outfit going forwards but carrying a load of championship quality defenders. Why would we be able to keep clean sheets. Need a keeper and three centre halfs. Not a good un at the club. Eddie has his hands tied somewhat. Can he perform a miracle. Lets hope so, need a couple of wins over next month.

Darlow has always been a ditherer, nowhere near good enough. Saves shots he should and gets plaudits. Worse keeper in the PL that started this weekend.
