Jason Tindall has spoken to NUFC TV after Newcastle’s 3-3 draw at home to Brentford. His reaction is a mixed one as he’s pleased with the performance but realizes a draw does little to help Newcastle’s league position.
On the positive side, Eddie Howe and his coaching team have had just ten days to work with the squad. We saw a significant improvement in the performance from the rest of this season.
While the defensive problems were still on full display, the lads looked lethal on the ball and caused Brentford problems all afternoon long. Newcastle edged the possession while launching 23 shots, 9 of which were on target.
One of the focuses during the past few weeks has been on set plays. Newcastle won 8 corners, including one in the first minute. It was from a corner that Newcastle took an early lead through Jamaal Lascelles.
However, that didn’t last long as The Bees stormed straight down the pitch for the equalizer. It was a mistake from Karl Darlow that allowed for the immediate response from the visitors.
The match was end to end which the supporters at St. James’ Park ultimately were thrilled with. While the result was disappointing, there was a lot in that performance to provide some hope that maybe Newcastle are close to turning the corner.
Tindall was asked about the impact the past few weeks had on today’s performance. The assistant head coach was very pleased that two goals resulted from the extensive work put in at the training ground.
This is some of what the 44-year-old had to say:
“We’ve tried to implement as much of our philosophy on the team as possible in such a short space of time. You aren’t going to be able to cover everything you want to cover. You’ve got to try to lay down your philosophy as quickly as you can.
“Set plays are a big part of what we do. We see it as a big threat. I’m really pleased that we scored the first goal from a set play.
“The equalizer to make it 3-3 was also from the training ground with our wide player overlapping and a great ball from Ryan. It’s pleasing when things come off like that.
“We’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do. We’ve done a lot of good work and I think you’ve seen that come out today with a good performance. I think it’s a big step forward but we still know there’s more to come.”
Unfortunately, there was an ugly side to this display. There is still much work to be done in a short amount of time if Newcastle are going to survive this season. The defending again was just dreadful.
Tindall was asked about the goals that were conceded and responded as follows:
“I think every aspect of our game needs to be worked on. We know how difficult it is to keep clean sheets, especially in the Premier League. But it’s something we need to aim for.
“We are disappointed with the goals that we conceded today. Too many individual errors, looking back throughout the season, that we need to eradicate.
“It’s a team game and everyone is responsible for that. It’s our duty as coaches to work with the players on the training ground to make them the best they can be and try and put that right.”
Putting the result aside, there were more positives than negatives in the performance. Unfortunately, Newcastle have an even steeper hill to climb with results not going our way around the league.

Comment #241Toastie, you have it spot on and I’m not going to join the very small number of hugely optimistic fans here, just to be seen to be optimistic. Its a very good league this year and I think we can write off Villa aswell. We need a team like Southampton to falter (very possible) and Brentford perhaps, to give us three teams to climb above. We can’t write Norwich off either. Eddie needs a defensive coach beside him, and Jones isn’t that. We need clean sheets and games where we only concede one, to stay up. And realistically, rather than trying to be optimistic, that is not Eddie’s forte, if fact its his achilles. Surely Fede and Dupravka are coming back on the team sheet? Great performance in some ways, but we’ll lose plenty, too many, against the better teams if we keep playing like that. Hopefully we can adjust for those games.

Comment #242As Saint-Maximin performed a series of acrobatic back flips Frank was torn between pride and disappointment. “We were at a big party we weren’t invited to and showed great mentality,” said Brentford’s manager. “But we didn’t defend well enough – we gave far too much away.”
Howe surely sympathises. (Louise Taylor)

He was bullied by Toney all game and was scared of him. Kept giving ball away and made 2 awful challenges.
Fell over and feigned injury because he misjudged the ball for about the 4th time.
Great at carrying and passing ball but he’s a liability we can’t afford in the defence.
He’s never far away from giving away a pen or getting sent off when under pressure, far to reckless.

Comment #244I think this is the strongest bottom 6 the Prem has had in years…
And that is going to make it really difficult to stay up.
Norwich will be better for having Smith and after that who are the three teams that look like being relegated?
If we get to Jan adrift then it will be loans only as no top calibre players will sign knowing they could be playing in the Champs.
And, how committed are loans?
My worry is that a decent team would have scored a hatful against us yesterday and if Arsenal hammer us 4/5-0 as we play more open where does Howe go from there?
As I posted yesterday, Howe can only work with the squad he has and we are seriously lacking in too many areas.

Comment #246After time to reflect, it wasn’t a bad point but we needed all 3. Much more attacking play but defence is a shambles.
Darlow 5, howler for the first goal, poor distribution, never looked confident. Dubravka will be back in for Arsenal.
Schar 6, offered an outlet going forwards with the ball but gave away silly fouls and always looks like he’s going to get sent off.
Lascelles 6, might be generous, scored the opener, slightly unlucky with the deflection but positionally not good, however did made some key tackles.
Clark 5, still think he’s the weakest link, struggled all game, although Ritchie didn’t help him much. Need Dummett back ASAP
Murphy 6, linked up play attacking wise but defensively seemed to go missing at times. Would Manquillo have been a better option.
Willock 6, again maybe generous, no defensive help from what I could see, was more involved going forwards but still looks off the pace. Hayden maybe should have started.
Shelvey 7, huge critic of him but he worked hard, more energy, running from him and passing was good.
Joelinton 8, my motm, yes he should have struck that chance first time before falling over but he was everywhere, strong, skilful, good link up play didn’t lose possession.
Wilson 6, seemed slightly off the pace to me but did a lot of running to help the team.
Saint-Maximin 7, grew into the game, seems to benefit from Shelvey being in the side.
Subs
Fraser 7, wasn’t on long but did well, great assist and tracked back to make a key interception.
Longstaff 5, poor, back to his worst in that he delays decisions which result in him losing possession.

Comment #247I forgot Ritchie, 5, harsh maybe and can’t fault Ritchie for work rate but I think Lewis will start soon. Defensively he was caught out many times yesterday.
Arsenal will be a tough game, well every game is but we can get a point of the attacking play is good again.
The problem is clearly at the back and in midfield.
We really need a whole new back 4 and a quality defensive midfielder.

Comment #250I think the plan was to be quite open against Brentford and go for the win and maybe if we hadn’t conceded straight after we scored who knows what would have happened.?
I don’t see us being as wide open against Arsenal but at the same time they are not that great at the moment Ramsdale has been man of the match in loads of their games so putting them under pressure early would be a good idea
For me a key part of us doing well under Howe will be getting Almiron in the team somehow his pressing at speed will help us defensively too

I think Darlow has been poor for a while he’s only really a backup keeper seems to lose all confidence when Dubs comes back like he knows he’s on borrowed time so just stops doing the basics
Dubs isn’t the perfect keeper by any means but he instills confidence in the defence by claiming crosses and organises them better we always are more solid when he is in

Looks like the complete centre forward would love to see us bring him home and you wonder if he would fancy it? Him and Wilson as a front 2 would be great

Comment #255I wonder how many feeds of the match Eddie had yesterday and how many times has he watched it since?
I’m sure he’s already analysed it and knows what needs changing.
Already working on Arsenal and how he’ll approach it.
Different horses for different courses, may see a different formation and players.
That was his first roll of the dice, balance wasn’t great but a vast improvement and many positives.
Saw more positive play in that 1 match than the previous 12.
Gutted I have to wait a week for next match, aint said that in a while.
With a dozen games to go last season nearly all of us thought we were going down, struggling to see where we’d get a point never mind wins.
I don’t feel anywhere near than anxious or worried, if anything I’m confident we can play our way out of trouble.
I’ve always said this squad is better than we see, Howe needs the chance to find the right balance and we’ll be on the up.

Comment #259There’s still 8 games before January, some very difficult games in December but Howe is a bit of specialist against the big teams… I think we’ll get a couple surprise results and could have 15/18 points by Jan. I’d be happy with that.

I think playing Willock from the start was a reasonable choice given that the team had been setup to be on the front foot attacking from the off.
But the failure was with the manager in not replacing Willock during the game with Hayden when it was clear to see that Willock could not deny space to the Brentford players whilst Shelvey was further upfield.
Dubravka is the number one keeper so there must have been a reason why he wasn’t selected. Its almost certain he will be picked for the next game as Darlow looks short of confidence.

Comment #264If we’d signed Willock as a new player without his loan performance last season he’d have been labelled already as a waste of money.
Can’t nail down a first team place, contributes little if he isn’t scoring and has rarely looked like doing so this season.
He saved us last season but we should have known that scoring run would never be maintained.
Arsenal knew that, we didn’t, and they got the best end of the deal at £25M.

His goals blinded everyone.
Didn’t think he was the type of midfielder that we needed in Jan, made myself known in the summer on signing him.
Hes a great athlete like Almiron but I’ve no idea how to play either effectively in the side.
Don’t think either should be in CM.

Comment #267The difference in the players intensity is what I enjoyed yesterday but more than anything Joe’s performance made me smile.
If ASM had played like that yesterday 99% of the blog would be drooling and calling him world class.
That was a superb display from Joe and how he used to play before we got him.
Other than the chance at the end he never put a foot wrong!
He’s been one of our best performers for weeks, he’s going to really shine for Howe playing in a set up like yesterday.

Comment #270I’d be very surprised if the same starting eleven start against Arsenal.
Although the attacking, passing on the floor and pressing tactics were clear to see and very much welcomed the midfield was still very weak.
Shelvey played higher up the pitch where his accurate range of passing can be decisive but there was no one between him and our central defenders.
Arsenal could steamroller our midfield if its not stiffened. Willock and Almiron are too lightweight. Hayden is the natural choice. Longstaff could do a job but he seems very slow in thought. He frequently gets caught with the ball. Is it because the other players / tactics don’t present an option for an easy and quick pass ?

Comment #271Joelinton has been reignited by Eddie.
You can see it in his body language, attitude and effort. Great to see!
Shelvey put way more in, also.
Darlow blew it tho’, looks like he fears the inevitable. Gotta get some full backs on the field, fit or whatever. It’s just a thoroughfare down our defensive flanks.
Richie is way more effective as a mid fielder. He ain’t got the legs for mf & d.
It eats into his mf qualities, same goes for Murphy.

Comment #272Even though defensively we made errors we still had more than enough chances to score more
ASM was extremely wasteful at times he still needs to pick a pass quicker him and Richie don’t always seem on the same wavelength
It was pleasing to see ASM get into the box more even attempted a few headers in the box you do have to wonder what went on under Bruce as we looked fitter etc

Comment #273OP I agree with a good bit of what u say. I was happily blinded by Willocks goals and athleticism but I could see the same issues Billson and others were saying. Limited passer with limited vision etc but just shoved it to back of mind. He is though, a decent tackler if he could apply himself. Mund put up an excellent vid of him before, taking balls of guys etc, but I guess it was a Denis Wise job (no offence Mund, not your fault) 🙂
Our problem as I said earlier and Billson too, is the strength of the division and the bottom half. The scores yesterday were a disaster.

So much better going forward yesterday.
22 shots worth 1.83xG with 17 coming from:
ASM – 7 shots, 0.36xG, 2 key passes, 1 goal
Joelinton – 4 shots, 0.24xG, 2 key passes, 1 goal
Wilson – 6 shots, 0.79xG & I’m STILL thinking about Toney’s block

Front three is there to stay.
The balance defensively wasn’t quite there so I reckon 433 is our best balanced set up.
Extra midfielder in there. Hayden basically.
Back four with actual full backs.
It’s a shame its only a 28 game season now to get 34 points.

At the end his studs catch in the ground and his ankle twists, he falls over as not to damage himself, didn’t slip.
He’d have been better if his foot had slipped a bit as it wouldn’t have buckled underneath him.
He slipped in first few mins, got up won the ball back and crossed for Wilson to head on goal.
Can’t think of any other time during match.

Comment #279Was good to see us on the front foot for a change but defensively we was left lacking.
The goal keeping error and the unlucky deflection didn’t help, maybe on another day it would’ve been 3-1.
I thought Schars antics of faking an injury because he misjudged the bounce was pretty pathetic. Longstaff was just to slow, he’s a liability, he had a run of 2 or 3 games playing well but nothing amazing.
Is Fernandez injured? I think he’s one of our best defenders, Lascelles seems to have lost whatever he had.
Going forward we looked good, Wilson was getting the support he’s been missing for a long time, Joelinton was on form, St max had a good game. If Wilson had his shooting boots on we could’ve won easily but Brentford were good on the counter.
I sen an improvement and thought before the game kicked off that we were gonna be exposed at the back just by everything i’ve read about Howes attacking mentality, if you’re gonna attack you’re gonna be left exposed at the back (Unless you are Citeh with world beaters)
I definitely seen positives but with Norwich winning yesterday it kinda clouds it.
