Loan Update – Defender Returns From Injury As Two Other Magpies Get Rare Appearances

Kell Watts returned from his ankle injury on Tuesday evening. The defender started in Wigan’s 2-1 win at Solihull Moors in an FA Cup First Round replay. Watts had missed the previous two league matches after suffering the injury in the initial FA Cup tie.

It was deadlocked after full-time at a goal apiece. But The Latics got a winner in the 104th minute from midfielder Callum Lang to advance to the second round. Watts was able to play the full match, which was his 17th appearance during his loan spell.

Matty Longstaff got a rare run out in Aberdeen’s 1-0 defeat at Dundee United on Saturday. Matty was brought on in the 73rd minute for Jack Gurr for just his fifth appearance.

The match was 0-0 heading into the break when both teams had a player sent off within minutes of each other. It was still scoreless when Matty came on in the second half. Unfortunately, Dundee got the winner in the 80th minute through Ian Harkes.

Aberdeen have now lost two straight matches and find themselves in the bottom half of the Scottish Premiership. The nervy times has manager Stephen Glass preferring experience over youth at the moment.

Rodrigo Vilca continues to gain valuable experience during his loan spell. He started Doncaster’s 0-0 draw against Lincoln City at home yesterday. Vilca was brought off in the 94th minute for Lirak Hasani.

This was Vilca’s 12th appearance overall and 7th start in the league. Doncaster are still mired in 23rd place in the League One table.

Lewis Cass and Port Vale suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at Oldham Athletic on Saturday. Cass started and played the entire match which was tied at 2-2 heading into stoppage time.

Unfortunately, an own goal from Aaron Martin in the 93rd minute has resigned The Valiants to the 3-2 defeat. They are currently in third in the League Two table. Cass has made 16 appearances so far this term, 11 of which have been league starts.

Oisin McEntee and Tom Allan both started in Greenock Morton’s 2-1 defeat at Raith Rovers. It was McEntee’s 9th start and Allan’s 10th appearance. Greenock Morton are now second bottom of the Scottish Championship.

Jake Turner was brought on in the 48th minute of Colchester’s 1-0 defeat at Stevenage when starting Goalkeeper Shamal George was forced off with an injury. It was just the third appearance for Jake. He helped to keep Stevenage, who had converted a penalty just before halftime, quiet in the second half.

    Mandy’s Mags,
I don’t believe any of those three would be open to joining us.

Who’s accounts are they Mund, certainly not mine. I think we’ll bring in some quality editions but I don’t think any of them will be names that have been discussed on here for the last couple of months.

I know Jail was saying about not knowing which players we can get in Jan, given the league position. Considering the potential journey ahead, not just the money (which will be helpful), I don’t think it’s unrealistic going for Tarkowski and/or Coady. Would take Mings too. All are a sig step-up on current defence.
I wonder if a decent bid for Chris Woods would work too. Ideal for back up /partner to Wilson, for next 2-3 years. Of course, all dependent on whether PIF want big signing(s).
Lastly, I wonder if we could have a quiet word with Schmeichel at Leicester? I know they have been one big family, but the timing might be right to enquire about him (or a couple of others) from there?

    Ace50,
Any player permanently signing for us in January has to consider the possibility that we’ll be in the championship next season and whether or not to take that risk. Would Coady be selected for Qatar if he was playing in the second tier. The players you’ve listed are not unrealistic at all if we were guaranteed to be in the PL next season, unfortunately we’re not.

I appreciate that Jail, but (apart from a large no. of injuries – which could happen I guess) is Coady seriously going to be starting for England in Qatar? I know how we are doing, and the points we have, in Jan will be a driver, but if I was a professional, the opportunity of what lies ahead would be a big draw.
I might be looking through rose-tinted glasses of course 🙂

    Ace50,
No disrespect but I do think people are looking through rose tinted specs when listing these players we should sign, despite what some people claim we are rooted deep in a relegation battle and that isn’t an attractive to a lot of already very wealthy footballers and especially those with their eyes on a world cup spot.

I’ve got no idea who will come in and i find it hard to believe anyone else thinks they can say who will or won’t come.

Everyone loves whatifery on here, what if we’re out of the bottom 3 come Jan 1?

(Gasps, shock, horror, how outrageous) could happen.

I understand having to look at the worst outcome but there’s a few talking as if it’s set in stonle, we’ll be cut adrift come Jan.

Theres so many factors, so many different outcomes, factors and points tallies in play, that may or may not happen before Jan 1st it’s impossible to say anything with certainty or get close.

We’re without doubt in a tough spot, unlike other seasons there’s a positive can do attitude around the squad with owners actively trying to improve the club and squad itself.

Everyone is pushing in the same direction for the first time in years, I’m keeping the faith, I’ve still seen no reason to lose it.

The club must have two or three lists of targets for Jan, hope for the best, plan for the worst.

You might be right. It will take a lot of persuasive skills to get the right guys in.
We will also need a left back (if EH can’t get a tune out of Lewis and Dummett is still crocked) and a real action type centre mf – along the lines of Phillips.

So on a footballing blog where people offer opinion and debate, you find it hard to believe that some people can give an opinion on who they think will come and who won’t?

I haven’t seen the full game from yesterday yet but what I have seen it’s very evident from big Jo and his goal is that the one thing he seems to have worked on is his composure in the box. His goal was one he would have lashed at and either mis-kick to the keeper or high and wide, I think Howe will get more out of him. I think Schar is a good footballer, but I don’t think he’s a very good defender, again I haven’t seen the full game yet but his marking is poor and I’d guess he was somewhere suspect for the goals. He’s what I’d call a luxury defender and until we find some rhythm we need solid no nonsense defenders that worry about defending first and foremost and that’s why I think we need to have Lascelles and Fernandez as the starters in a 3, I’d prefer Dummett over Clark, Clark I think has been looking like he is in the latter parts of his top level career since last season and is becoming a liability, he’s a solid back up in my opinion, not a starter, but I’m hoping he is only starting as he’s the only fit left footed centre half available.

    What’s the thoughts?

Why don’t we buy the best the Championship has to offer, then if the worse comes to the worst we’re sorted for next season. On the flip side of that those Championship players might want to 100% prove themselves in the Premier league hence keeping us in the Premier league.

You’re right about Clarke Lascelles. I have always rated him as a no-nonsense defender, decent on the ball and a goal threat at set pieces. His legs have gone though and that’s it for him for me.

With 8 games to go until Jan 1st and no idea what position we’ll be in, anyone making any claims is guessing and it’s pure speculation.

    Which it was before anyway.

People can say if we’re in this position or that, this player will sign

Unfortunately we don’t know what position we’ll be in, no one has a crystal ball.

Which is why I Said the club will have more than 1 list of targets.

Surely, Howe must see everything that the fans watched, the horrendous defence, Willock anonymous AGAIN, if he plays Shelvey we need Hayden, or Longstaff( after kick up the backside), anyone but Richie at LB. Please don’t play Schar. Please tell Maxi to pass sometimes, other than that it was exciting. So just a few Tweeks and we should beat Arsenal.

Ace50, I liked him at villa too and was excited Rafa got him at the time and he has been an excellent pro and so dangerous on corners, he had the versatility to slot in at left back too, I actually think that’s where he broke into the Villa side, but anytime I watch him nowadays I don’t have any real sense of security, but a good servant

I’ve never been convinced we’d be going for Sule KVB etc etc in Jan.

Carltoon I’m hoping Miggy comes in for Willock for the Arsenal game and Willock comes on as a sub late on in the game and scores the winner.
Willock wasn’t that great when he first came and was dropped, he then started coming off the bench and scoring important goals for us then he was put back into the starting line up.

Cartoon, Howe is tactically astute, he’ll make a bigger difference on the touchline when he finally gets there, I think he knows his midfield to striker set up, hopefully he plugs the defence quickly. What was your view of Jo from the stands? I’m excited about him again… Although I will say I haven’t seen the miss yet lol

I’d play Hayden CM, he’s better than people give him credit for further up the pitch.

I’d drop Shelvey, away from home, Arsenal I’d want more in there, leave no space.

Longstaff is the only real option there.

    Fraser for Ritchie.

    One legged man for Schar

    Blind man for Darlow.

    Jobs a good un

I’m wondering whether the 343 was to accommodate ASM.

Hes not great at holding his position, tracking back etc.

Playing like that gets him on the pitch but gives him less defensive duties.

If that’s the reason, which I feel it is, can’t play Ritchie there, no way he can cover that side.

Ritchie has been a defensive liability in that position all season. I watched it first hand in the West Ham game…he just isn’t that type of player. He tries and shouts a lot, but he lacks the awareness for that position so gets caught out lots

“I said half jokingly last week, if Eddie says to Jonesy, just spend all your time and energy working with Joelinton and turn him into a £20M player instead of the £7M player we have atm, that will do.

I think Joel has another level that hasn’t been tapped into yet, maybe with some decent coaching and better players around him he’ll surprise his doubters.

I have serious doubts that Sean will make it, too many downsides for me, has a thunder ball shot in him but his lack of awareness, control and pace loses us possession way too often.

I’d love to be wrong, and see him regain his form of 3 years ago when he burst onto the scene.”
