After match week twelve, Newcastle sit at the bottom of the league table. Though our distance to safety remains at five points with Tottenham’s come from behind win against Leeds this afternoon.
Unfortunately, that was the only match to go Newcastle’s way this weekend as Norwich and Aston Villa picked up massive wins on Saturday, which also happened to be in debuts for Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard.
Newcastle, while looking renewed with the ball at their feet, were only able to pick up a point due to some untimely errors at the back. The 3-3 draw against Brentford has to go down as two points lost.
Here is a look at the league table as it stands tonight.
Club | Matches | Goal Difference | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|
9 | Brighton | 38 | -2 | 51 |
10 | Wolves | 38 | -5 | 51 |
11 | Newcastle | 38 | -18 | 49 |
12 | Palace | 38 | 4 | 48 |
13 | Brentford | 38 | -8 | 46 |
14 | Villa | 38 | -2 | 45 |
15 | Southampton | 38 | -24 | 40 |
16 | Everton | 38 | -23 | 39 |
17 | Leeds | 38 | -37 | 38 |
18 | Burnley | 38 | -19 | 35 |
The work continues tomorrow with a trip to Arsenal on the docket next weekend. It’s then a quick turnaround with Norwich coming to St. James’ Park just three days later followed by Burnley to start a brutal December.
Newcastle just must pick up a couple of wins in our next three matches and then hope to scavenge some points to close out the year. Here is what is remaining before the winter window opens.
Date | Opponent | Location | KO | Result |
---|---|---|---|---|
Sat 27 Nov | Arsenal | Away | 12:30pm | Lost 2-0 |
Tues 20 Nov | Norwich | Home | 7:30 pm | Drew 1-1 |
Sat 4 Dec | Burnley | Home | 3:00pm | Won 1-0 |
Sun 12 Dec | Leicester | Away | 2:00pm | Lost 4-0 |
Thurs 16 Dec | Liverpool | Away | 8:00pm | Lost 3-1 |
Sun 19 Dec | Man City | Home | 2:15pm | Drew 1-1 |
Mon 27 Dec | Man United | Home | 8:00pm | |
Thurs 30 Dec | Everton | Away | 7:30pm | |
Newcastle will likely remain without Eddie Howe for much of this week’s preparations. The head coach tested positive for Covid on the Friday before the Brentford match.
Hopefully, Howe can return in time for Arsenal on Saturday. We should find out more about Howe’s progress in the next few days.
It appears that Joelinton will take the poll as Newcastle’s best player in the Brentford match. The 25-year-old was outstanding and has a sizeable lead over Allan Saint-Maximin.

Comment #2I think we could get as many as 13 points from those games. But I’ll be delighted with anything from 10 upwards. 🙂

Comment #5I think there’s some that have looked at how we have performed so far, looked at other teams’ performances, and judged that it’s going to be a big feat to stay up. I am one of them. I hope, and think, we will (just) stay up if we get the right signings in Jan…but as you say, it’s not predictable.

I don’t really have any logical reasoning…just pure unadulterated hope, it kinda worked for me with the takeover, so I’m sticking with it 🙂

Did you see my comment to you yesterday? If not I can repost. Winter is coming soon. I have a NUFC toque that I will be able to wear with a bit more pride this year. The boat is still floating and the engines are getting stoked. Nothing is lost yet. So glad to see Joel perform well yesterday. He’ll just get better with Howes coaching.

I think I remember you mentioning about me and Cap meeting up and that was great to hear? Sorry if I got that wrong.
Positive is a lot easier to deal with in life than the negative as nothing has been written.
Brilliant to see Big Joe step up the plate as myself and a few others have said they think Joe will become a big part under Howe and it was a great first game under him

Comment #12If we’re within a cpl points come January, any player looking at us shouldn’t be scared of coming.
They’d be joining a exciting attacking manager and a team on a upwards trajectory, who’ll be looking to strengthen elsewhere.
If we’re a cpl of points from safety it’s nothing to make up over 17 games and relogation shouldn’t really be much of a factor.
Again I’m not expecting to be signing CL players.

Ok!
OP
That’s what I’m hoping.
Any intake in jan will be really telling. None means EH thinks it’s not necessarily the way to go, tho’ I can’t see that. The m9ney will be nervous. Then it’s down to who ‘wants’ in, who’ll sell to us, could be a try out boycott. Least this window.

”The only reason we’re talking relegation battle is it’s a easy talking point for pundits and journalists”
And the fact we’re 12 games in, haven’t won a game yet, have the second worst defence and are effectively six points from safety with eight games to go until the transfer window opens, yes apart from all that it’s an easy talking point.
Reminds me of that The Young ones scene:

Comment #19Norwich and Villa may have won and Brentford may not have lost 5 in a row but I don’t see them improving dramatically even those with a new manager.
Same goes for Burnley and Leeds
We on the other hand are improving and will continue to improve week after week.
Even after 12 games and throwing away points and games we’re still within touching distance of those above.
I expect us to pick up more points than those above us because we will improve the most between now and January.
We haven’t been fit, no individual work, looks like there was no set piece work etc etc.
Every single department aimed towards match days has improved or is looking for ways too.
I’ve said all along there’s way more in this squad than we’ve seen.
We saw a glimpse of what’s possible with these players and I’m excited.

It was something along t’ose lines. I said it would be great to have a few pints with you and the others but unfortunately that’s not going to happen. So I’ll just have to have a brew for you all. Samuel Adams brown is one of my favourites.

You seem to try and go out of your way to try and ridicule people who have a different opinion to you. I don’t know why.
In the conversations I’ve had with you, you come across as a really canny lad……just live and let live, it’s OK to have opposing opinions. We all want the same thing after all
