The Work Continues On Monday As Newcastle Have A Mountain To Climb

After match week twelve, Newcastle sit at the bottom of the league table. Though our distance to safety remains at five points with Tottenham’s come from behind win against Leeds this afternoon.

Unfortunately, that was the only match to go Newcastle’s way this weekend as Norwich and Aston Villa picked up massive wins on Saturday, which also happened to be in debuts for Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard.

Newcastle, while looking renewed with the ball at their feet, were only able to pick up a point due to some untimely errors at the back. The 3-3 draw against Brentford has to go down as two points lost.

Here is a look at the league table as it stands tonight.

The work continues tomorrow with a trip to Arsenal on the docket next weekend. It’s then a quick turnaround with Norwich coming to St. James’ Park just three days later followed by Burnley to start a brutal December.

Newcastle just must pick up a couple of wins in our next three matches and then hope to scavenge some points to close out the year. Here is what is remaining before the winter window opens.

Newcastle will likely remain without Eddie Howe for much of this week’s preparations. The head coach tested positive for Covid on the Friday before the Brentford match.

Hopefully, Howe can return in time for Arsenal on Saturday. We should find out more about Howe’s progress in the next few days.

It appears that Joelinton will take the poll as Newcastle’s best player in the Brentford match. The 25-year-old was outstanding and has a sizeable lead over Allan Saint-Maximin.

    NY Mag,
Not very sporting of you to make a damning criticism of me then say you’re not prepared to debate the matter. Not cricket at all 😕

Flick! Then we could use Murphy in front of Manquillo, And Richie in front of Lewis, if there is a need

Jail, i too think we are in a relagation battle same as every season, or most anyway, but posters are right, nothing is decided, we must put our faith in the new manager, I’m going to try and be more positive, because quite frankly the worry takes it’s toll

Carltoon, I think we’d benefit from Willock’s athleticism in the middle of the park, if just instructed to get challenges in, play the simple early ball, and get box to box. You don’t want him dwelling on the ball, or trying to pick a pass. Just win the ball back, rotate possession, get up and down the pitch, that’s how I see him best for us, and he needs bringing along, cos he’s young and we spent 25 million quid to get him, so I’d like to see him play. Played a lot of games at Arsenal, so for sure there’s a player there.

I’m back, was watching a very interesting You Tube video. Yes, I think it’s only fair that you point out where I was ridiculing someone’s opinion.

I cheat at blog word games, but in real life I’m reasonably fair, but I have had the occasional lapse.

I once gave an LBW when the ball pitched outside the line of leg stump.

    carltoon,
Nothing is decided you’re right and with 26 games to go we’ve a lot more chance to put it right than Shearer and Rafa got, but as you well know being in a relegation battle does not necessarily mean you are going to get relegated. Take that season we beat Leicester 0-1 on the Friday night, we’d been in a relegation battle all season but although not mathematically safe we all knew that we were safe after that win and therefore out of the relegation battle. There’s obviously different ways of interpreting what one actually is but the situation we’re in has gone way beyond it being an opinion, it is an undeniable fact.

    Jail,

I think you quoting op’s comments and then giving your own opinions was trying to ridicule him. It was an attempt to try and drive your opinion over his.

If it wasn’t then my apologies to you, that’s how it came across.

    NY Mag,
I wasn’t ridiculing him at all, he knows that. I was pointing out the reasons why every man and his dog connected with football are saying we’re in a relegation battle and trying to make light of the situation. What boils my p sometimes is when people opine on my comments as you have just done, but when Mund ridiculed my post pointing out that Mark Lawrenson had said in one of his columns that we were in a relegation battle, why didn’t you come on and give him a similar dressing down. It’s because he’s your ‘mate’ and you ‘respect’ each other and don’t want to upset him.

Jail, I’m just going to think if we get relagated, we will be in a better position to get back up, of course I would hate it, because for me, I’m at that age where time is running out for me to see my team win a trophy, yes I had the Fairs Cup, but it was so long ago I can hardly remember. So being some one who worries about everything going on in the world, and never think anything good will happen at Newcastle, I’ve decided I’m going to stop this and try to be positive.

    carltoon,
There was a good article in The Guardian today that someone put up on here, basically saying that no matter what happens there’s hope now. I’m not thinking about relegation, I’m thinking about those two games I’ve got tickets for and the incredible atmosphere there’s going to be. The trouble is though when transfer targets are discussed unfortunately the threat of relegation has to be factored in.

I’m 76. The last time we won something of note was the FA Cup in 1955. I have lost 14 years because of the fat man. I just would like them to be a good team for my last years. If they win something, that’s a bonus. It’s just good to have a smile on my face!

Just remember, 14 years mainly of purgatory and it’s gone.
No matter what happens, whether we stay up or go down we will come back stronger than we have ever been before, of that I am certain..

I don’t think it’s fair to say ‘every man and his dog has had a go at’ Mund. I certainly haven’t, and I know a few others who haven’t either. It more of a constant back and forth between the same people, day in, day out. That probably makes it seem like more people due to the volume of arguments and sniping.

There’s plenty of things Mund says that I’m polar opposites about, but I’ve never had a dig at him. Don’t see the point really 🙂

I’ve done a silly thing for next week’s FPL H2H that pretty much guarantees my opponent victory (more so considering he’s top of the H2H league anyway) that I’m hoping will pay off in future games.

I’ll also take a hit in the main league but even if it means I don’t break back into the top 50 again, who cares?!

I think some people misunderstand what a relegation battle actually is. If you’re in the bottom three then you’re battling against relegation. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be relegated though.

It’s a bit like being in the middle of the ocean without a life jacket or boat, you’re fighting against drowning, but you haven’t actually drowned yet. We’re just waiting for a passing ship or Aquaman to swim by to save us right now.
