Newcastle Reportedly Still Interested In Move For Spurs Midfielder

During the summer, then-manager Steve Bruce wanted to strengthen the midfield with some loan signings. While Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury garnered much of the attention and was likely Bruce’s preferred choice, Tottenham’s Harry Winks was also touted as a potential option.

Of course, Mike Ashley refused to budge on his stance that Bruce must offload before adding. Newcastle are now paying the price without a win in our opening 12 matches in the league.

The Mail has recently reported that Winks could be targetted in the January window. According to Simon Jones, the 25-year-old was on the list of targets over the summer should Newcastle have been able to make room in the 25-man squad.

Jones also reports that Winks is still an option as he meets the criteria for January as a player with Premier League experience. The England international has racked up 112 Premier League appearances in his career.

Winks has not featured much for Spurs over the past few seasons. The Tottenham Academy product made just 15 league appearances last term and has just 8 in all competitions this season.

However, his fortunes may have turned with the appointment of Antonio Conte as Spurs’ new manager over the break. The Italian started Winks in the midfield in the 2-1 come from behind win against Leeds on Sunday.

After the match, Conte named Winks as one of the players who helped spearhead Tottenham’s second-half revival. This is what Conte said as published in football.london:

“I’m pleased because many players are involved today.

“Tanganga, Sanchez when he came in, Winks – he struggled a lot with the rest of the team in the first half, second half he played with a lot of personality and played well.

“Also Sessegnon to come back into the team after injuries was good for us.”

It remains to be seen if Winks will get the consistent playing time under Conte that he didn’t under Espirito Nuno Santo and Jose Mourinho. Though if not, he could be a decent option should become available during the winter window.

revisiting the DOF debate,we know as much as the press know.

So maybe you weren’t far off on your thinking, when you said it’s not a priority.

It’s entirely possible that the owners targeted DOF,simply isn’t available at the minute.
They could have asked Eddie about the actual players are he thinks are needed and trust him.
As far as the argument they won’t sell/they wont come,I reckon agents will have been sounded out.
The only flaw in my hypothesis,is the fact that they have let Penfold go.
Who’s ganning to negotiate the signings? 😉

Don’t write Mitrovi? off. If he mend his recklessness and put in extra effort. Use his fiery passion focus on football. I think he is improving every season. He does suit Howe’s team.

I’m not joking here mind but I think he would be an improvement on Ole.
Club legend, all he has to do is let the coaches do their job, then tell the lads to go and express themselves..
The powers that be at Manure aren’t daft enough to employ the other two Steve’s.
He stabilises the club till the end of the season, comes oot smelling of roses.
    His MASSIVE ego stroked..
It’s made me so footing angry writing this post.. 😆

Bruce to ManU would seem ridiculous to me. I just can’t believe it would happen. Why would these world class players respect a manager like Bruce who is towards the end of his career and has NEVER managed players of their ability or a club as bit as ManU. He might be a club legend from his playing days but that didn’t work out so well for OGS or Giggs…

Would be hilarious if he went there. Can’t see it happening though. I think it’s just ex-players and journos trying to get some attention.

It would surely be the ultimate insult to Bruce, if he isn’t asked to be interim manager.
It will highlight what owners really think of him, despite their faux support when he was failing at Newcastle!

Ashingtoon62 – you serious or on a wind up? He was there for over a decade, was well liked by fans and players alike, and he scored some important goals including the winning goal in the CL final.

    Ask any ManU fan.

Considering the amount of games Man U play per season, definitely a sub!

Ooooh…I’ve got a really left field candidate for the ManU job on an interim basis…Southgate. I haven’t seen him linked with the job in the press but that’s my input anyway. Knows quite a few of the players and might be willing to do the job alongside the England job until May.

Agree Ole was a “supersub” who was in the right place on the 92nd minute in the final against Bayern Munich, but Bruce didn’t have that much success. He captained Fergie’s first successful team as I recall!

Ashingtoon62 – I know OGS was often a sub, doesn’t change the fact that he scored some very important goals! I see you’ve used Wikipedia too…doesn’t that just show league appearances? So, 235 league appearances in 11 years? Not too bad considering injuries and he played less often in his latter years. And 91 goals…91 goals in 235 appearances is decent and it’s fantastic when you take into account he often came on as sub!

    Ashingtoon,
I would love it, just love it if he went to Man U. It really isn’t a case of just being a figurehead though, you have to have tactical nous and that’s where OGS fell short, if Bruce went in there and tried to implement his style it would be a calamity and if he done what he done here and reverted back to the previous managers tactics
    ……….it would be a calamity.
    Please let this happen.
