Newcastle Reportedly Still Interested In Move For Spurs Midfielder

During the summer, then-manager Steve Bruce wanted to strengthen the midfield with some loan signings. While Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury garnered much of the attention and was likely Bruce’s preferred choice, Tottenham’s Harry Winks was also touted as a potential option.

Of course, Mike Ashley refused to budge on his stance that Bruce must offload before adding. Newcastle are now paying the price without a win in our opening 12 matches in the league.

The Mail has recently reported that Winks could be targetted in the January window. According to Simon Jones, the 25-year-old was on the list of targets over the summer should Newcastle have been able to make room in the 25-man squad.

Jones also reports that Winks is still an option as he meets the criteria for January as a player with Premier League experience. The England international has racked up 112 Premier League appearances in his career.

Winks has not featured much for Spurs over the past few seasons. The Tottenham Academy product made just 15 league appearances last term and has just 8 in all competitions this season.

However, his fortunes may have turned with the appointment of Antonio Conte as Spurs’ new manager over the break. The Italian started Winks in the midfield in the 2-1 come from behind win against Leeds on Sunday.

After the match, Conte named Winks as one of the players who helped spearhead Tottenham’s second-half revival. This is what Conte said as published in football.london:

“I’m pleased because many players are involved today.

“Tanganga, Sanchez when he came in, Winks – he struggled a lot with the rest of the team in the first half, second half he played with a lot of personality and played well.

“Also Sessegnon to come back into the team after injuries was good for us.”

It remains to be seen if Winks will get the consistent playing time under Conte that he didn’t under Espirito Nuno Santo and Jose Mourinho. Though if not, he could be a decent option should become available during the winter window.

It’s a pity he didn’t let a few others go so as not to hinder their development! 🙂

    NY Mag,

It should have already been home. Southgate missed the biggest opportunity in the Euros we could have ever had and he messed up. That’s the point!

Let’s see how he does in Qatar. Hopefully he goes that step further. We will see…

We’ve not had as good a squad since 1970 !
That’s why we should have won at least one final!

‘Vale of Tears’ is looking like it might be a good watch, it has subtitles though.

100% agreed. Wor Eddie will be such a good manager for us. Gonna be one hell of a tricky season for us but I’d not want any other manager in charge the him. He is a professional and perfect for the job in hand.

    Moonraker,
That squad we had from 2002 till 2010 was actually called the golden generation, that should have won something.

    EGB,
It has subtitles though??? That shouldn’t put anyone off, unless of course you’re blind.

    Fenham,

He put his trust in his players and it didn’t work out….that doesn’t make him a bad manager.

Sadly it wasn’t to be….I was devastated by it.

He and the players will learn from it, we’ll be world champions next year 🙂

I’m not dissing Southgate btw, literally said he’s done well… Just saying he’s not an “elite” manager imo.just think a Klopp, Pep or Sir Bobby in his day would have won us something with this team.

Southgate got the England job the same way Charnley got his job with Ashley.

Right place, right time and he has the perfect temperament.

He’s already been given unbelievable credit, Boro, England under 21s then with that unbelievable CV he got the England job!

He’s got that bloke with a head the size of a donkey as his main CB, plays like a donkey too.

Plus his first choice keeper is so poor he’s the only person in the world who couldn’t catch the c word.

While I was happy that England got to the final, you have to lay the blame on Southgate that they didn’t win it. What was he thinking picking the youngest ones, to take penalties when there were more mature and experience players to choose from. Even Grealish was ready and eager. What a disappointing letdown.

For people wanting a box there is two games left available which is Palace and Leicester.

If you want it and can make it let me know but you will have to be quick. Might be an impossible task
