This Young Goal Machine Likely Beyond Struggling Newcastle’s Grasp

The Times recently claimed that Newcastle see Italy as an ideal market to raid for world-class talent. The report named three players embroiled in current contract sagas as potential future targets.

Those players are Lazio keeper Thomas Strakosha and Inter Milan pair Marcelo Brozovic and Stefan de Vrij. Brozovic and Strakosha are both on deals that will expire in the summer while de Vrij is in a prolonged dispute to extend his Inter stay beyond 2023.

There has also been reports that Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne is on the radar. The 30-year-old is out of contract in the summer and engaged in a bitter dispute with the club he’s been with since the age of 15.

The theme that runs through these targets is that they are world-class stars with uncertain futures at their current clubs. However, another theme is that they are very unlikely to join Newcastle in our current state.

This stark reality can also be transferred to Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic, who has been touted as a potential target according to Alan Nixon in The Sun. The 21-year-old’s trajectory has seen him emerge as one of the most coveted striking talents in the world.

He has been tangentially linked in the past and Nixon claims Newcastle scouted him during Serbia’s monumental win at Portugal during the break. But his sudden rise in production will likely mean he is out of Newcastle’s reach at the moment.

The Partizan Academy product joined Fiorentina in the summer of 2018 as an 18-year-old. The striker broke into the first team in 2019-20, mainly as an impact substitute scoring 6 goals in his 30 league appearances.

It was at this juncture last season that his talents truly started to blossom. From December 2020 to the present, the 6’3″ Vlahovic has scored 30 goals in his 40 Serie A appearances. He has added 2 goals in 2 Cup appearances as well as 6 goals in his last 10 caps for Serbia.

His contract with Fiorentina runs out in 2023. However, they are now resigned to the fact that Vlahovic will not be signing a new deal to remain in Florence. They will likely cash in on their star striker in January or next summer.

Vlahovic was heavily linked as a potential Harry Kane replacement if Tottenham had caved in and sold the striker last summer. Manchester City are also admirers of the prolific Serb.

His price tag has been touted as high as £70m but Nixon claims it could be less than that. Newcastle could theoretically outbid any rivals but the glaring issue would be convincing Vlahovic to come to a struggling Newcastle enmeshed in a desperate fight for survival.

Moon I don’t think they can realistically get top 4 this season without a great manager.

Can you realistically name a great manager who can turn them around mid season who’s available?

Poch is not going to be sacked from PSG until at least the summer if he even gets sacked at all, Ten Hag won’t leave until summer, Rogers said he won’t leave Lecister last week, Zidane categorically said he doesn’t want to manage in England within the past month.

Then you aren’t left with a whole lot of top quality managers who would be suitable, and a lot those who are left are contracted to other clubs so it makes it even more difficult.

Granted there could be one or two managers I’m not thinking of that could be completely slipping my mind, but I can’t see a long term manager signing before the summer and I can’t see them getting top 4 without a great manager.

Big Al left Joelinton out, must have been close to making the team of the week.

Certainly saw the Hoffenheim Joelinton on Saturday, if he can start taking those chances instead of falling over he could be a big player for us. He slipped earlier in the match too, better studs needed possibly.

Problems in Jan are going to be who can we bring in, as Burnley will play hard ball with Tarkowski. I can see them standing firm and letting him leave for free in the summer.

Similar with Ake, City will need a replacement

Loftus-Cheek seems to finding some form again so he’d be difficult to prise away from Chelsea.

Origi, they don’t have much depth in the squad and Klopp will have a strop haha

Saw Billing again for Bournemouth, decent player but I think we need better quality than him.

Zinchenko seems out of favour, Trippier keeps getting mentioned, then there’s someone like Belotti.

Hopefully another week of training will help our defence and midfield out a bit. Lewis I think will replace Ritchie in the side, Manquillo possibly replacing Murphy. Although it’s centre back that’s the biggest issue, Lascelles can only really play in a 4. Schar adds a player who can bring the ball out but he’s quite reckless at times, Clark is a liability, Fernandez seems out of favour and our best defender in Dummett is injured still.

    If everyone was fit

    Dubravka
    Schar, Lascelles, Dummett
    Manquillo, Hayden, Shelvey, Lewis
    Joelinton, Wilson, Saint-Maximin

With Willock, Fraser, Almiron and Murphy all offering good options from the bench.

Longer studs can mean tripping over yourself even more.

Personally anytime I remember trying even slightly longer studs it affected everything like crazy, how fast u can run, ball control everything.

So I would guess studs won’t fix things snd might make it worse. A lot of players were slipping all over the pitch, I think its just that time of year, too wet and soggy amd not quite cold enough to harden the ground. But then again they use under pitch heaters so maybe there isn’t an easy fix.

The pitches are just too wet and soft atm.

Home and now awake after our mad dash across the Atlantic to catch the Brentford match. Was hoping we had nailed Eddie Howe’s first game, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. We did manage the stadium tour on Friday afternoon and discovered we had the same gentlemen guiding us around that did it 10 years ago.

Atmosphere was amazing until our defense and keeper fell asleep and let Toney grab an easy equalizer. If we have money to spend in January, perhaps replace the entire backline as there was a definite nervousness in the crowd each time Brentford had the ball on our half.

Joelinton had a good game, but I still see him as this purebred St. Bernard puppy that someone paid a premium for at 8 weeks and expected him to be a show dog right away. He works hard – has done that for the last couple of games this season when he plays, and can hold up the ball very well. The happiness of himself and the crowd when he scored was noticeable and loud. Then he can mess up just as easily and falls over or makes a bad decision on which foot to strike with and that erases his great work. Still a bit clumsy, but if this is how he is after 2 weeks working with Howe, he should have a good second half of the season.

Was surprised with Willock. He has lost all confidence and seemed to be playing at 60 percent of his effort from last year. He was not playing well off the ball and didn’t do too much with it. Conversely, the man I have loved to hate the past two seasons (no not Hendrick) but Jonjo had the game of the season if not his game of the last 3 years. He hustled, he defended, his passes were spot on. If we can keep him at this level throughout the end of the season, we would just need to find one other midfielder and that position is sorted this year. Longstaff looked completely lost when he came on. He lost the ball several times and made more bad/incomplete passes than good.

Pre-game when we were watching Darlow and Dubravka warm up and knew Darlow was starting (again unfortunately), we saw Karl nail pin point passes to Dubravka just past the center circle – then when game time comes – he lumps the ball to no one. People say he distributes the ball better than Dubravka … not sure what they were watching. Please just start Martin and leave him there for the end of the season.

For Carltoon – we were actually in the Platinum Club so must have been very close to where you sit. Didn’t even realize it until we got in and saw a nice empty bar area (it filled up quickly) but was a nice section.

It took us 10 years to get over, but we are already thinking we will be back in 2 or 3 – hoping to get a favorable scheduling around American Thanksgiving. And it wont matter if we don’t stay up – we will be back. The city and the people suck you in. Everyone is friendly, met a lot of great people on the trains, in the shops, even when we stopped by and donated at the Foodbank tents. Great conversations and warm smiles.

Last word – we flew out of NCL at 6am Sunday – we were flying Delta to Jacksonville and because of a last minute delay we ended up rescheduled to a KLM flight. I will never fly KLM again. We ended up with the check in clerk for 35 minutes because although we were rebooked the flights were not in the KLM system and KLM wouldnt answer their own phones. When we convinced them to just let us get over to Amsterdam and we would figure things out there since our original flight was still the 6am to Amsterdam – they told us they couldn’t because of our luggage – we had carry-ons! Finally they rebooked us – but turns out only to Atlanta (we were originally supposed to fly to Detroit and then Jacksonville). So in Atlanta the Delta reps were trying to get the KLM reps to acknowledge their screwup – and we literally were the last ones on the flight to Jax after getting a confirmation 5 minutes before take-off. Talk about a stressful end to a great trip.

Clasol fo you not think replacing the entire backing eould be suicide? You’d be asking new players to just come in and gel like they’ve been playing together years on top of that they might not even perform in the PL if they happen to be from Europe. Too many variables to consider with that approach I fear.

I think the best solution is a top quality keeper, it’s the quickest amd most reliable way of conceding less goals. Because While Dubs is far better than Darlow, he’s a shadow of the player he used to be 3 years ago.

I think we’re not even that weak at cb I think its our wide backs that are sinking the ship. I’d bet they will get a keeper and a LB+RB first.

I think the players linked in the Northern Echo is just lazy journalism and is no different to the list of players that we have all been discussing on here for the last few months. Eddie H has spent every waking minute training them, I doubt very much he’s had time to leak to journo’s his January wish list.

@Charlie – Joe slipped cutting the ball back on to his left then couldn’t regain his feet.

Pinnock does slide past him close to his right foot but don’t think he gets a touch on him. No call for VAR – and Joelinton’s reaction doesn’t even call for it.

I have access to the full match replay on my NBC service here in the US so just rewatched that few minutes (81st thru 83rd minutes)

I was at the match but Leazes end in the Milburn, so when Joe went down we all just assumed he’d been fouled and we’d get the pelanty. But as MOTD showed, it was a slip. He should have pulled the trigger with his right foot earlier. He seems to lack that strikers instinct to shoot without thinking. And he slips a lot. More than any other player I can think of. Could be his size and weight. But he looked a player on Saturday. Was so pleased for him, although if he’d got that last minute winner, it would have been transformative for him.

Irish Rob – understand where you are coming from – but I believe we all have been saying that Clark and Ritchie should not be on our left side. However I do believe we should keep Ritchie and use him as an impact sub or against (future lower teams) – his passion bleeds on the pitch and can deliver a ball most times just cant get back and defend. I know Lascelles scored, but his marking was horrible and positioning off the ball other than on corners was not great. It was so surprising how much he declined while under Bruce and will be interesting to see if Howe can pull it out of him again. I think we are in trouble until we can get some new blood in – but will also be interesting to see how/if Lewis responds to the new training and see if he will be given a chance since he likes moving forward with the ball and then to see if Fede has a future with us. I always thought he was more a calming reassurance as opposed to any of Kraft, Lascelles or Clark.

Maybe 2 strong center halfs will help. Murphy played well on his side, but prefer Manquillo who is a natural defender who can get forward. We got a lot to sort out and I dont expect anything outstanding from the Arsenal game but if we keep making small progress who knows after that. If we can sneak 9 points through the end of December we might have a chance in the new year.

I also dont think we will wait until the end of each transfer window to do our business anymore. So yes will take time to get the team right, but hopefully that will be sorted quickly.

I’ve watched it back on slow mo,his studs get stuck in the turf that’s why it looks so comical, the way he went down.

100% agree he should of let fly straight away though, instead of taking the touch.
    That’s hindsight for you though.
He did have time and space to swap to his left and compose himself, thus deffo beating the keeper, wasn’t to be though unfortunately..
