On Monday, Scott Wilson with The Northern Echo reported that Eddie Howe wants the Newcastle hierarchy to focus on ‘tried-and-tested Premier League performers’ in the January window. The report went on to name four potential targets.
Two of those players, Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, were first named as targets soon after the takeover was concluded in early October.
Wilson claims that Newcastle remain very confident of landing Tarkowski despite recent reports that Burnley would not weaken their squad by selling their star defender. Both Tarkowski and Lingard’s contracts run out in the summer.
Lingard appears to be ready for the next chapter of his career. The Man United Academy product isn’t entertaining the idea of a new contract at the moment. Though a lot could depend on which manager takes the reins next at Old Trafford.
Wilson also named Liverpool’s Divock Origi and Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko as potential loan options. However, he has followed up his initial report with another stating that Liverpool will not allow Origi to leave.
The 26-year-old has just 7 appearances this season. However, with the African Cup of Nations getting underway in early January, Jurgen Klopp will be without both Mo Salah and Sadio Mane until early February.
The duo could miss up to 6 Premier League matches and 2 FA Cup ties. Klopp will need to keep Origi at Anfield as cover while his two superstar attackers are away. The Belgian has performed when given the opportunity this season with 3 goals and 2 assists in his limited appearances.
Newcastle have been linked with a lot of players in Italy’s Serie A. The Times recently claimed the club see Italy as an ideal market to raid in January. That could partly be due to Premier League clubs playing hardball with newly-rich Newcastle.
We could find it difficult to land ‘tried-and-tested Premier League performers’ in the winter window. Though it remains to be seen if any of these four targets are truly on Newcastle’s winter agenda.

Comment #4How is that asking for money? I explained the situation of how it was nobody asked for anything.
You are a sad crank who needs to get a life
How many have to say to you it needs to be left before you give up this charade?
Got to be jealously that nobody wanted to go to yours. Have you asked yourself why yet? Clear as day to me

Comment #5I hope they don’t allow him to leave, because there’s something about Origi I am not keen on personally.
I dont think he’d be much of an addition compared to other players we could realistically get.

Comment #6Simon – that video of the chanting fans is bloody awful. Talk about arrogance, we get taken over and our owners are the richest owners in the world and these muppets are singing like we’ve won the Premier League and Champions League for 5 years in a row…which would also be awful but at least they’d have a valid reason to brag!

Comment #7Just got a message about a dodgy character trying to sell boxes to Toon fans.
I’m not saying anything untoward is involved as it is up to individuals to decide they do.
Managed to get a photo of the bloke – mmn not sure about giving him anything.

Comment #12Origi averages a goal every 2 games for Liverpool when you factor in minutes played.
Again, I think people are getting a bit too big for their boots if they think we’re too good for the likes or Gini or Origi.

Comment #14Jail – Exactly. I see we’ve been linked to Vlahovic too…yeah right. Oh, Mbappe too…ridiculous.
How about we get in a position to actually challenge the CL places before we think we can attract a player of that calibre?
Fans are getting sold impossible dreams by journos who are greedy for clicks.

Comment #15Origi would be a great signing given a run of games he could maybe do better than Wilson!!
More than good enough for us but I would say about 95% of these names mentioned will not be anywhere near the targets when January comes around
Trippier and Tarkowski feel like the only ones that we could have a geniune interest in as they tick a lot of boxes but there is no guarantee they would want to join us if we are in the bottom 3

Comment #16Jail – I’m glad you’re not accusing me of knocking our own club when I’m being realistic about transfers…
I’d love to see someone like Mbappe or Vlahovic sold on the vision for the club and join to be part of pushing us up the league and getting into the CL again. But realistically, why would they? They’re not Geordies, they’re not even English. Their affection towards NUFC will likely be virtually non-existent and a million miles away from that of the fans.
On the other hand, if there was a top class Geordie like Shearer, Carrick, or Gazza playing somewhere else, you’d think we’d have a good chance to bring them home.

Comment #19My abiding memory of Wijanldum is, he was a ghost away from home – pretty sure he didn’t score any of his goals away, maybe one.
He played all 38 matches in the league and scored 11.
When he came here he was relatively young and hungry, was great at home but a passenger away.
I don’t like players who if they’re not scoring they do little else to help the team. Dele Alli is another I would not have for this reason.
Now Wijnaldum is 31yo looking for a final big contract.
Pass.

Comment #23SholaShow – Well, it doesn’t really bother me that much. I think he played fairly well away, it just so happens that he scored all of his goals at home. 11 goals in 19 games? Not sure if he played all 19 or not. I think it’s just an anomaly that he did that but he’s definitely better than our current options.

Comment #31Mag52 – can you really blame him though?? Was with us for a season and Liverpool come in for him. I don’t blame a player for that, only players with a real affinity for the club and/or feeling they owe the club to get promoted back will stay in the 2nd tier. Not many players with that kind of mentality these days.

Comment #32He didn’t. He was renowned for being anonymous away.
At 31yo and on the downslope, having made his millions and had his trophy success, I don’t want such a flaky player because I think he’d be prone to more flakiness than usual compared to when he was looking to make his name.
Its’s a different thing signing ageing players who’ve had success with a history of good character, graft and aren’t the type to disappear in matches.
Better than what we’ve got is a low bar which hundreds of potential signings fit into. I always see this point, but it’s not or what we’ve got.

Comment #36Gini is a decent enough player but not for me.
31 and by the time this team is ready to be challenging he’ll be nearly retired, how’s his legs now?
It’s downhill for him from, best years behind him.
Prefer someone around 25 who can’t mature and grow with the club, with the hunger and desire to match.

Comment #38Know its not great when someone moves after relegation, yes Shelvey didnt, but I think most top players would. Times like that, we have to put ourselves in their shoes/boots, I know if only!!! Have to think about career, potential international football and lets face it, unlike us, most are not fans of the club anyway. So cant hold it against someone because they moved. If better than what we have now, and really that is most decent players out there, could we really say no?

Comment #40If the entire basis of the argument for Gini is he scored 11 in 38 here, then I’d just point to Willock and say, similar type of player, younger, would rather persist with him.
What’s he on? 8 in 21.
At the moment he seems to be entering the prematurely written off stage of the Newcastle fan experience.
Played with an injury for most of this season.
Last game I assume that was finally resolved. A bit of a disappointing performance, but nothing alarming like Longstaff’s performances every time he plays.
