There’s news in an exclusive from TEAMtalk today that Newcastle want to sign former central midfielder Gini Wijnaldum in January.
Gini left Newcastle for Liverpool in 2016 after only one season at the club, after Newcastle were relegated.
We signed Gini for £14.5M from PSV in the summer of 2015 and sold him to the Reds for £25M, one year later.
It was another financial deal the former couldn’t turn down, but also Gini didn’t want to play in England’s second division, even with Rafa Benitez as coach.
Wijnaldum had 5 good years at Liverpool, winning both the Premier League and the Champions League.
The versatile midfielder is struggling for first-team action at his new club PSV, and maybe we could get him in on loan in January with an option to buy in the summer.
Gini has just turned 31, but he could still be an excellent player for us for two to three years.
The 85 times capped Netherlands International (26 goals) is not happy at PSG and had this to say to Portuguese outlet NOS recently:
“I’m not completely happy,” “The situation is not what I wanted.
“I have played a lot in recent years. This is something different and that takes getting used to.”
“I was really looking forward to the new step and then this happens. It is very difficult.”
In his only season at Newcastle, he played for us 40 times with 11 goals, and while at Liverpool, he played 237 times with 22 goals.
Gini is a class player, there’s no doubt about that, and he may welcome the chance to return to Tyneside to finish off his outstanding career at the world’s richest club.
He has real class and would undoubtedly be a good addition to our squad, and could make an immediate impact in January.
He is also versatile, but the big problem will be to try to convince PSG to part with him in January.
The better bet would be to sign him permanently next summer.
He would be an excellent signing in the summer too.
What do you think?

How have I twisted your words. You have been boasting about getting Matt Ritchie’s box “it’s not what you know it’s who you know ) ” you claimed. Now it’s not Matt Ritchie’s box at all but the club box which sells for £4000 to anybody with the money and holds 12 people, only that guy “you know” is getting it for ten people at £1500, you know him so well you’ve had to get him to show you his drivers licence to reassure you. I thought I’d comment on it to let people at least have a look at what they were signing up for.

Comment #10Yes to Wijnaldum. Knows the league really well and I’ll leave it to the money people to work out that side of things. From a football perspective I’d definitely have him.
Quite possibly just paper/agent talk though and nothing in it…

Although I would love to see us sign him just to stick it to Klopp who wanted to keep him but they wouldn’t pay his wages 🙂

Comment #14I think GinI is a terrific player…but no the intelligent pesky irritating Jack Russel type we need in the short term break up play and to feed Shelvey or anyone in else in front of him with a simple pass.
We have plenty Gini type players in the squad already so not sure we need another one.
IMO

Might I suggest that Willock was signed because Maxi was making noises about how Willock being signed could help him decide whether to stay or want away.
They may have felt it more important to spend £25m than lose a prize and potentially more valuable asset?

If you’re referring to my post @34 (earlier thread), can I suggest you re-read the comment addressed to you and think about it.
There is no p-take in there and certainly no hatred, as you suggest.
Many people have recovered from key events in their lives and realised that there is more to life than them.

Comment #21It’s a no for me on Gini, if we were relegated he would be off again sharpish. Need to try and get players who will be committed and won’t mind playing in the Championship should the worse come to the worst.

Comment #22We didn’t spend £25 million on Willock, sure was an initial down payment of £6-7 million with the rest paid over his contract. It was the first time we had done that under the Ashley regime, which is why Clown said we broke the rules to sign him.

Comment #24re Wijnaldum – I thought there was a rule you could not play for more than 2 clubs in a season so surely Gini can’t move until the Summer and we need players in January?

Comment #26Predictions for pur finishing position next season anybody?Assuming we survive this season. Quietly confident.
I’m gonna push the boat out and say 8th or a Europa league qualification, if we have 2 good windows under our belt. When the sponsorship deal is done that could be a completely different ball game. If it is Aramco, they could do a Citeh and pump 1/2 a Bil in but lets not get ahead of ourselves

You’re correct about buying Willock in installments and if anything confirms that Ashley was petrified at the prospect of losing Max before his value maxed

Comment #30Recruiting a top scout ahead of any players?
Shrewd move.
We are lacking in that area. E.g. an NUFC spends 40 million on a player, you expect him to tear the league apart. It’s like the other united spending 100 on some player.

Comment #32Lesh at least we don’t have to put up with any of those shenanigans anymore.
Anyway I’m hoping Miggy will be like a new player under Howe and rediscover that blistering pace he had in that first half season and add a good few goals.

Comment #33Will be interesting to see who we go for dependent on league position and if premiership teams refuse to do business
If we want prem experience then we could get Wijnaldum and Trippier 2 top quality players with plenty of experience on big wages but they could be the “marquee” signings for January
Then you could get Billing or Kelly from Bournemouth either of them would be an improvement in the areas that we need strengthened
Then you could get go for a foreign league player like Jonathan David as your striker option and Doku as the winger/creative option

Comment #36Eddie will have given the owners a list of players or type of players he would like in January, it was probably one of the most important things discussed. The only reason he has said that is to not upset the players he has now and has to work with till January.

Comment #37Lesh – perfectly possible. Whatever it was, I think it was a business decision rather than a footballing decision. The former would surely have been to sign a quality centre half.

Comment #38Who will we have in outgoings is almost as important as who we get in, we don’t have very much in saleable assets. I suppose getting rid of Fede, Clark, Hendrick & Gayle will be priorities to free up space for incoming. Will we let them go for nothing? I’d even be looking at letting go of Darlow if we can get better in

Comment #39@36…I agree…it’s the sensible approach to avoid dummies being thrown out the pram and to keep everyone together and believing they can show enough to Eddie and stay in his plans.

Comment #40I guess we can all guess as to who Eddie might release to make room for new acquisitions, but I think he’ll keep Hendricks and Fede.
