‘It’s Very Intense’ – Magpie Explains Howe Impact On Training Sessions

During the press conference for Brentford last Friday, Eddie Howe singled out Jonjo Shelvey as a player who had impressed him during his first few weeks as Newcastle manager. The head coach said the following about the playmaker:

“I knew how good he was having played against him. But then when you work with him you realize he’s an incredible technician and can play all sorts of passes, long and short.

“In terms of our philosophy, he’s someone who’ll be very important to us.”

Shelvey picked up a calf injury after the opening match of this campaign. After suffering a setback, he didn’t return until after the takeover was completed. The 29-year-old came on as a substitute against Tottenham but was promptly sent off after receiving two bookings.

He started the draw at Brighton and was again in the starting eleven against Brentford. Shelvey put in a fantastic performance with five key passes in what was just his 5th appearance of the season.

The midfielder has given an interview with NUFC TV and was asked about the encouraging words his new manager gave him last week. This was Jonjo’s response:

“Obviously when a new manager comes in you don’t know where you’re going to stand. He said when he came in ‘everyone’s got a clean slate.’

“Everyone’s just really jumped on board with what he’s trying to do.

“It’s obviously nice to hear things like that said about you. Especially from the man that’s going to be picking the team and the man that’s going to be leading you.”

It’s a good sign that Shelvey has been impressive in training as he could be a pivotal factor in the fight for safety. He’s one of the few players in the squad who can spray the ball around the pitch.

Shelvey has fully bought into Howe’s philosophy. That means grueling sessions at the training ground to get the lads in tip-top condition. Here is how Shelvey described training under the new boss:

“It’s very intense. It’s something where you’re on it every single second of the day. You’re constantly thinking about football.

“I believe that’s the way football should be played.

“Since he’s come in he’s galvanized everything. Everyone has bought into what he wants to do.

“The last international break, I’d be to sleep by 8 o’clock every night because I’m just shattered from training.

“It takes getting used to. I feel like the lads are there now. We’ll keep working day by day and week by week. Hopefully, we’ll get the results to go with the performances.”

What kind of life is harassing a woman on a blog for the past how many years? Do you call yourself a man? Do you feel big and strong? Does it make you feel empowered, gong at a woman in some serious vile ways?

It put you on the naughty step did it not? 😳

    Just being considerate.
Thought you might like longer for your breakfast and to rest your keyboard activity to avoid repetitive strain injury.

I’m off for me booster jab, just as well with this nasty South African variety surfacing.
If we end up with a mega lockdown maybe the season will be abandoned. Might reduce stress levels but I’d miss the matches again, now that there’s new optimism.

Catch up on the craic this evening..

    From the article

“There are regular pauses in action, so Howe – or, latterly, Tindall – can talk to players, individually or collectively, to explain precisely what he wants. On occasions”

Where do we think Jones is now in the equation.?
He’s done nowt wrong but isn’t part of Howe’s corner.
Maybe he ends up being sidelined or into a different role?

Will he stay or will he go?

I think the most damaging point is this:-

“He just felt the squad, as a whole, needed to be a little fitter and sharper.”

Basically saying the last regime were lazy, probably explains a bit as to why Jones isn’t at the forefront any more too.

This weekend coming up will be in remembrance for one of our biggest legends.

10 years ago will of been when we lost one of the biggest players to wear the black and white. Can’t quite believe it’s been 10 years and will always stay in my heart, a huge loss for football and a huge loss for our club.

    RIP

    Has this ever happened?

    I’d bet, no.

Two Rooney-style goals from midfield and beyond, both in conference league games, same evening. Both goals scored by teams in minnow Cyprus against European opposition.

One by Gomez (remember the Wigan star?), the other for wor Ketspaia’s team.

Look at YouTube, they’ll be there soon enough.

Something to tell your grandchildren about 🙂

If we don’t get anything out of Arsenal tomorrow, surely we can muster our first win of the season v Norwich on Tuesday night. Its an absolute must-win for sure.

Gotta keep Pukki on a tight lead, I remember that hatrick from a couple years ago when we got our arses handed to us. Hopefully we can show the same attacking intent as against Brentford but take the defensive side more seriously.

    A touch extreme, your conclusion?

He didn’t basically say that, actually he expressly said they were a fit group.

I don’t think we need to see more running. We need to see more purposeful attacking running.

    Let’s do some 4-3’s 🙂

    Toon Tang,
Given Arsenal ranks up there with Old Trafford and Anfield as one of our least successful away grounds then any positive result tomorrow is a bonus. But you’re right, the Norwich and Burnley game’s are more than massive. I said if we don’t beat Brentford we’re gone, I’ve had to rethink that to give myself hope but surely if we can’t beat our two nearest relegation rivals then who can we beat before January.

Although we didn’t win against Brentford I saw enough in that performance to be really encouraged

For the first time in over 3 years I actually saw us come out with a plan and try to execute it

Brentford’s goals all had something fortunate about them and we battered them for large periods of that game with better finishing we would have won regardless of the 3 goals conceded Wilson, Joelinton and ASM guilty of messing up decent opportunities and half chances

Don’t know why but I fancy us to get a positive result at Arsenal we normally sit back and allow them to dictate and eventually break us down but this time we will press them into mistakes

Jail, im of the same thinking, if we somehow lose to both Norwich and Burnley we’ll be so far cut off its gonna be a monumental task after Crimbo.

Draws are no good either at this stage.

We just need to somehow plug our comedy defence like.
