Eddie Howe has given his post-match comments after Newcastle’s soul-destroying 1-1 draw against Norwich. The lads played valiantly after going down a man in the 9th minute. Ultimately, Ciaran Clark’s rash decision has cost Newcastle a chance at 3 points in a must-win match.
Howe was not too harsh on his defender but rather concentrated on his tactical approach after going down to ten men. Here is what Howe said about the sending off per Newcastle’s Twitter account.
“In the cold light of day he’d probably make a different decision but the impulse has made him stop the striker.
“My immediate focus was to figure out what we had to do. I didn’t want to take Ryan Fraser off but Fede came on and I thought he was magnificent.”
Many fans were surprised Howe selected Clark over Fernandez, who put in an outstanding display after coming on. We should see the Argentine keep his place against Burnley on Saturday.
While Howe refused to use absolute’s like ‘must-win’ before tonight’s match, the bleak circumstances mean Newcastle simply must pick up three points on Saturday. Here is Howe’s assessment of the path forward after tonight’s draw:
“We know we need to win the game and we want to win the game but we have to concentrate on the day-to-day preparations and give our all like we did tonight.
“We know we need wins. Draws aren’t going to be enough but all you can do in a game is give your all and I think the players did that tonight.
“That is the level of effort we need in every game, regardless of how many players we’ve got on the pitch.”
If there’s any consolation from tonight, it’s that Newcastle were likely the better team eleven on eleven. Clark’s sending off cost us an excellent chance at our first win of the season.
Now we are in a rarified situation of losing our first 14 matches. No Premier League club has ever survived after such an anemic start. We are currently still six points adrift of safety depending on how Watford fare at home to Chelsea tomorrow.
As luck would have it, Leeds picked us a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace tonight on a 93rd-minute penalty from Raphinha to move up to 15th place.
So The Magpies simply must win against Burnley on Saturday and then somehow pick up results against Leicester, Liverpool, the two Manchester clubs, and Everton to close out the year.
If we can keep form falling too far behind with a couple of wins from those six matches, January then looms large with an away match to Southampton, a home bout against Watford, and then a trip to Elland Road.

Comment #2This team is 100% relegated. Better we prepare and draft plans for the championship.
Meanwhile just enjoy the ride into the championship. We’ll be back. And stronger.

Comment #7In a sense it was a decent result tonight under the circumstances however a very disappointing result given the fact that we need wins.
However I’m not giving in until “The Fat Lady Sings” and there’s still a lot of water to flow under the bridge before that happens.
You can’t blame Eddie Howe and his team for this situation! Blame Mr Michael Ashley Esq.

Comment #8I think that’s the first time I’ve voted for Joe as MotM. It was a no-brainer of course. I certainly can’t fault his dedication to the cause. Norwich are likely to be one of the three to go down. I hope the lads get some rest for Saturday!

Comment #9Awful to hear there were fans booing. Sort that out ffs.
I think we can now call this a relegation battle
But we ain’t down. That said Howe has a poor history defensively and he will need bloody good defenders to cover his weakness there.
Good to hear there was fight in the lads.

Comment #18I just want to know why Fed wasn’t playing from the start. I was fumin. What a difference he made, Yes Joe, very good, Lewis seemed to grow in confidence, long may that continue, Clark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, What can I say, lost us that game for sure. Thought Shelvey had a good game ran himself into the ground, started to make mistakes, Willock much improved, Maxi PASS THE BLOODY BALL. thought Manquillo had a good game was always available going forward. But the team were on their knees near the end. YORK CAN, I WAS AT THE MATCH SO I WAS ABLE TO COMMENT ON IT 😉

Comment #29Just looked at the voting, must be some numbnut wum’s on. How can Fraser have a vote, he was only on the pitch 10mins. And, Manquillo who did very little wrong for 100mins gets no votes. Bonkers 😆

I reckon, in a functional team schar works well.
We’re nit quite there yet, but he shoyld stay, he’s the only defender that can run out if defense and play.
We should play saint max as sub for a while, he’s trying too hard and not hard enough when he gets despondent.
His burst of energy and tricks can win a game off the bench.

Comment #38I would want to ask Eddie why are picking Clark instead of Fernandez? I just do not understand it at all..
Is this an error of judgement? Lascelles is no better than Clark either but he plays him too? Should Fernandez be made captain? Answers on a postage stamp.

Comment #40I think Wilson should be our captain but it would br demoralising to strip Lascelles of the captaincy mid way through the season. Vice Captain Fernandez for sure,
