Newcastle have picked up a few firsts this afternoon. Our 1-0 win over Burnley was not only the first win of the new era but our first of the campaign. In keeping The Clarets quiet, the lads picked up their first clean sheet in the league this season as well.
Eddie Howe has steadily improved our defending as our goals conceded have dropped in each of the four matches since his arrival. We conceded three at home to Brentford, two against Arsenal, one on Tuesday against Norwich, with the clean sheet this afternoon.
It was a very tepid start from the lads. However, Callum Wilson was able to pounce on Nick Pope’s error late in the half with a tremendous finish. Rather than sit back in the second half, Howe had the lads pushing for another goal.
The second goal never came but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Burnley applied some late pressure with balls into the box but nothing dropped for them this afternoon. After four minutes of extra time, the final whistle blew to great relief for Newcastle fans across the globe.
After the match, Howe expressed his delight, and relief, at grabbing his first win as Newcastle manager. Here is some of what our head coach had to say per Newcastle’s Twitter account:
“It’s a mixture of emotions. Definitely relief but I’m proud of the team. It was a difficult game physically but I thought we defended very well.
“We started quite slowly but there were spells in the second half when I thought we were excellent.
“I will allow myself tonight to be pleased and content with today and the preparations in the last week.
“I want the players to enjoy winning and I want them to enjoy this moment and work hard to make it happen again soon.”
The win moves Newcastle out of the bottom three with Norwich facing a tough test at Tottenham tomorrow. The distance to safety has been halved to three points with Watford currently down 2-0 against Manchester City at halftime.
Newcastle will now focus on a very difficult trip to Leicester City in 8 days. We’ve crossed that first hurdle in winning this afternoon but big challenges lurk in the distance.
Here is Howe’s reaction after picking up his first win as Newcastle manager.

Comment #2Well done 9, you’ve shown yourself up as a homophobe here. Fancy calling the kid a fairy because you (incorrectly) think he played poorly. What next, you going to attack him based on his skin colour?

Comment #5I’ve not voted on the motm yet.
Thought a few had decent games.
Almiron was high energy, Lascelles did decent, Lewis is a huge improvement on Ritchie, Jo was really impressive in spells, Wilson was super switched on to nick the ball for the win….
We got a clean sheet too.

OP, we won, let’s just enjoy that for a while… I don’t think we’ll go 442 at Leicester, but we’ll see. A wins a win mate I’m happy.

Comment #10It’s a time honoured tradition and I won’t have it besmirched. If you don’t celebrate first I will be forced to have your post removed and my post is far too dramatic and inflammatory to be 1st, no one wants that. Do the right thing, one dog.

Comment #15Delighted to get a win, should’ve had a few before now but a win is a win and we’re off the bottom of the table.
Think we’ll see a 3-4-3/5-3-2 at Leicester, might need to drop Willock

Ye I know, playing a different formation, 442 is giving ourselves problems.

The track is quality, bit narrow but super fast.
It’s a drivers circuit, risk equals reward.
Could be a classic tomorrow, hard to overtake but there’s bound to be crashes and safety cars.

Read your responses Y and Dog. Thanks for the translation. Actually looked up your when you mentioned him (her?) last time. Cool breed.
Y, Almiron can become better I agree. Much like ASM, and Joel, they need to learn how to score more.

Maybe my choice of words reveals I was born in 1949, but the only relevant thing is the performance of the left back, Lewis, which was abysmal in the first half. I have given my reasons, based solely on the lad’s performance. Please let’s hear your reasons.

I respect your football opinion but without being over dramatic, today’s game was pne of the most important in NUFC history! L
Lose and we’re odds on for relegation and we might struggle to get back immediately.
Win and we give ourselves a good chance to save our status an hour on to build the team of the decade!
This 1-0 win was so important, no matter how we won it!

So because the game was so important then its not worth analysing the players or the game?
If my criticism of players performances or the formation isn’t to your liking pass over it.
I’ve no idea what point you’re trying to make @31, you come across like a KAREN defending her child’s poor behaviour!

Comment #36The first 30 minutes Led me to think it was going to be a 0-0 (at best) but credit to the lads they kept pushing. Few noticeable points: Jamal in the 2nd half a goal up looked more assured, definitely a confidence issue I think. Lewis looked to go forward more and was a good sign. Joe and miggy were everywhere but like willock, there were so many opportunities to release the ball to better positioned players but they tried to dance through and got crowded out which was disappointing. That period of sustained pressure was excellent but I thought we had a set piece specialist? One short corner we went back on and the rest all hoofed in and easily cleared.

Comment #37Howe seems to have pulled the boys together and got them playing on the front foot and organised. I think Eddie Howe and the coaching staff know precisely the work required to avoid relegation and create a bridge to build our club into a superpower.
A few reinforcements in early January to propel us into midtable mediocrity with a group of players battling for the shirt will make me a very happy bunny.

Comment #38As far as iam concerned we were at the point of no return in todays match, if we had lost that match it would have been a bridge to far to survive, but the fact we held on to claim all 3 points psychology it will give all the players a major boost going forward and give`s us a real chance now in the battle ahead, i still think it will go right down to the last few matches before anything is decided, but i definitely think the Toon are in with a realistic chance of staying up now HWTL
