As usual, there has been speculation on how much money would be available to Eddie Howe in the January transfer window.
Howe probably needs to bring in a center-back a full-back, a central midfielder, and a striker to strengthen the Newcastle squad.
They all have to be better than what we already have, and that could well be enough to keep us in the Premier League for next season.
And there are some good reasons to bring players in on loan too.
Some players may be wary of signing full-time with Newcastle because we are so low down in the Premier League.
That’s unless we win our next 5 games, of course, which is highly likely unlikely, so some players could come in on loan with an option to sign permanently in the summer.
We are being linked with all kinds of players, but with no Director of Football, it looks like Eddie Howe will be the key decision-maker on who comes in.
And as far as how much money is available, we heard some weeks ago that around £50M would be available to the head coach.
And we can spend up to around £190M in January without falling foul of the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
That’s because we made some profits over the last few seasons because the previous owner didn’t like to spend money.
Shay Given has heard rumors (yes – more rumors) that Howe will have around £45M to £50M available, and that sounds about right.
The consortium will then spend big in the summer, and sell some of our players too.
A huge clear-out will happen then, assuming we are still a Premier League club, which I think we will be, despite the naysayers.
Eddie Howe is a good enough coach to have us playing very well – very shortly.
Here’s what former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given has said about Newcastle while talking to Ladbrokes at its launch of the 5-A-Side Bet on Leicester v Newcastle and as reported today in the Chronicle:
“The rumor is that there’s supposed to be £45M-50M available for the club to spend in January, which isn’t really a lot of money in the current climate, so I see the club taking advantage of the loan market.
“I don’t think it’s a case of having to bring in players with experience of relegation scraps; you’re going to want players coming in who are going to significantly improve the squad.”
“Quality players are what’s going to get the club out of the position they’re in.”
“Immediately, I’m thinking about Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard; two quality players who aren’t playing as much as they’d like for their clubs at the moment.”
“Get the ball rolling with arrivals like that; it’s going to take four, five, maybe even six players of that caliber to come in in January to give the team a real chance of staying in the division.
“Jesse Lingard is the main one I’d be looking at; I think his contract at Man United is up in the summer.”
“So he should see the second half of the season as an opportunity to show people he’s capable of performing at a top-level, just like he did last year with West Ham. “
I like Lingard a lot and think he would be a great permanent signing for us in January at a knock-down price.
And there are other players – like Lille’s Sven Botman, Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Matthias Ginter, Burnley’s James Tarkowski, and Tottenham’s Joe Rodon who can help us big time.
Let’s hope Amanda Staveley has a few players lined up ready to come in on January 1st.

Comment #2Jail – Indeed. But I also suspect selling clubs will play hardball and try to leave it until late in the window to drive up the price. In virtually every case, we’ll need to sign the player more than the selling club will need to sell them.
It’s definitely what they get paid the big bucks for but it’s not going to be easy. Plenty of other people at other clubs getting paid the big bucks and they’ll be standing in our way.

Comment #5I think Dele Ali would be a great shout as he has definitely got the quality and with him being out of sorts for a while now we could get him on a good deal and he can kickstart his career in the black and white.

We will mate and it won’t take much to improve the playing squad with some gaping holes of quality already missing.

He has mate but we can’t deny he has quality as that’s already been proven. I think all he needs is a fresh start somewhere and shown some love and this would be a great place to do that

Comment #22Dele Alli – please let that one go, Shay. He isn’t interested in football anymore. He’s focused on fashion and playing computer games.
Another example of ex-pros paying little attention to the sport, which is why when people resort to argument from authority I give them little time.
Saying somebody played the game at the highest level and has lived it since they were a kid, has no bearing on their ability to evaluate players, especially if they don’t keep up with the game like the most passionate fans do.
Spurs fans are pretty much unanimous in desperately wanting rid of Alli for his shocking commitment to his profession.

Comment #23Another factor to take into account especially for players abroad is release clauses! Clubs can’t hold us to ransom if the price is a set amount!
Although wages could be an issue….. guaranteed every player will be wanting 80k minimum so need players that justify that

So is Ronaldo but would you turn him away? 😉
I know it’s a risk but if he could be half the player he was when he first went to Spurs for me it would be a no brainer

Comment #25Leicester has to be a win given the context of theirs and our preparations.
Man City or Man U at home we could well get something from one of those, more likely the latter.
Everton to finish the calendar year. Winnable. 14-15pts by New year has to be the target.
Then two relegation rivals as our first PL fixtures in the new year, both away.
They will both be hit by ACON when we play them.
Salisu who has played every match for Southampton gone, Djenepo too.
Watford will be hit harder with first choice CB Troost-Ekong, star player Sarr and squad players Masina and Louza gone, maybe their top scorer Emmanuel Dennis too.
4-6pts from those and we’d be well on our way.

I agree it’s a bit unappealing with how his career has went but we don’t know the full story and what has happened outside of football. IMO I think he loved the high life to much and took his eye of the ball (pardon the pun) but a good deal could be struck and we have seen what he can do if he can find the focus

Comment #28Ronaldo is a model-pro, it’s why he became who he is despite the clear natural talent deficit when compared to the likes of Messi.
It might be borne from complete self-interest, but you can’t question his commitment to excellence.
Alli is the exact opposite. A waster.
