With Lille playing hardball over center-back Sven Botman, alternative targets are starting to do the rounds. Yesterday, Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck was mentioned as a potential target.
The German has a bright future at just 22-years-old and shares some similar qualities to Botman. He is entering the final 18 months of his contract unlike the Dutchman, who is tied down until 2025.
The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has added another name into the mix in Sevilla’s Diego Carlos. Though at 28, he doesn’t possess the future potential that makes Botman and Schlotterbeck so enticing.
Carlos is right-footed, and with Newcastle reportedly coveting a left-footer like Botman and Schlotterbeck, he is not exactly a like-for-like alternative. Though he has attributes that would instantly improve Newcastle’s backline
Being Brazilian, Carlos is very capable on the ball. He is considered an outstanding, if sometimes rash, defender, and is very good in the air. Though not to the extent of the younger duo. He has also been linked with the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Barcelona in the recent past.
Carlos joined Sevilla from Ligue 1’s Nantes in the summer of 2019 for £13.5m. His current price tag would be around £30m making him a more expensive option than someone like Matthias Ginter, who has just six months left on his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach.
Luke Edwards, earlier today, reported that Newcastle prefer at least one of the two center-backs they hope to bring in have some Premier League experience. He named Arsenal’s Rob Holding, Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, Burnley’s James Tarkowski, Everton’s Mason Holgate, Liverpool’s Nat Phillips, and Tottenham’s Joe Rodon as being on the extensive list of targets.
Newcastle likely haven’t thrown in the towel on Botman just yet. Though the aim is to bring in defenders early in the window with Kieran Trippier inching ever closer to becoming a Magpie. So we’ll see if this link to Carlos continues to bubble away or if it is fleeting like so many others.

Comment #42The Dyslexic God – the problem with “friendly fire” is that you never know who else sees it and doesn’t understand the context.
I explained it to my brother a few years ago about him and his friends making loud jokes about gay people in the pub. He said his gay friend was with us so why did it matter. I told him it wasn’t about a 31 year old gay friend who has been out for 10 years, it’s about the 17 year old lad at the next table who is struggling to come out to his heavily homophobic parents and overhears a bunch of 30+ year old men poking fun of gay people.
Mostly I steer clear of making fun of people for controversial things unless I know I’m definitely in a safe place and can’t be overheard by people who don’t know me.

Comment #47I’ve been told Aubamyeang deal is virtually done. Loan with a £20m option to buy. Not from twitter etc.
Not sure on whether accurate or not. But he was released to AFCON early, so any deal would likely have to be done at the end of January surely.

Comment #48Personally, I think we’ll get Kelly or one of the other CB’s mentioned.
Burnley are likely to “bench” him until window is shut as they won’t sell to a relegation rival, in my opinion. But as stated, wouldn’t be unhappy if we could get him alongside Botman and Trippier.

Comment #50catchy – I voted for him too, I think the Iraq was was a total horror, but there are all sorts of complexities and nuances that I won’t get into on this blog. What I’m saying is that petition is not a cut and dried thing, it’s just not. I haven’t signed it and I won’t. I’d have thought that other topics aren’t up for discussion either but apparently they are, which makes them controversial and means they should stay off this blog too. I don’t want to see a counter post of someone who supports Blair either…
Some people are just nasty and attack, especially online. There are people who live on this blog and it’s their opportunity to be the centre of attention, the alpha, whereas in real life they’re a pathetic loser. It’s one reason I’d like a block button. Those losers will soon find hardly anyone engages with them because lots of people will block them.

It’s a big leap of faith by Kieran Trippier to leave a high-flying La Liga side in the Champions League last 16 – for one with the threat of relegation to The Championship hanging over them. Yes he’ll be paid handsomely but it says lot about his desire to to make this move #NUFC

Comment #53Bob, or sell him and get a replacement. That would make more sense as we will get a CH from somewhere, and their CH is sat on bench doing nothing.

I couldn’t read properly before i was 16, i still read very slowly, because words will appear or disappear from the line I’m reading changing the whole context of what I’m reading.
I don’t read books, it take to long but i read all the time, i love cars and learned by reading car magazines and bodybuilding fitness magazines.
I don’t do cancel culture, i believe in say what you want then we are all on the same page, you like a person or you don’t.
Right now I’m reading and learning why people are so fat, very interesting. ?

Comment #60He’s much better than Botman or Schlotterbeck, but Sevilla are also in a much stronger financial and league position than Lille, and his contract is until 2024, so I can’t see how we’d get him for £30m.

Comment #66Hats off to Trippier mind, if he has decided to join us in our cagy position then i have utmost respect for him.
In my view, in his case, it`s not about money, he is a millionaire already.
It`s about his drive and desire to be part of an exciting project in the PL, he wants to to back in his own country, the best league in the world.

Comment #72Anyone else Aubameyang would be a bad deal? I do.
He hasn’t done anything in 2 years. Scored 10 in the whole of last Season and only 4 this season. He’s 33 in the summer and his pace which made him who he is has dropped off a fair bit from what it used to be.
Then you’d have to imagine we’d be paying at least half his salary which would work out at £175k a week. That doesn’t seem like good business to me.
The cherry on top is we might not see him even play for us for over a month.

Comment #75catchy – Cancel culture is a made up thing by people who have a massive voice and want to extend their reach. It just doesn’t exist in the way they say it does.
Since history began, people like entertainers have lived or died (thankfully not often literally these days!) on their material. The world changes and if someone’s material is not deemed popular enough, then they won’t get as many gigs. Feeling sorry for a super rich comedian, singer, actor etc. who isn’t getting as many jobs these days is ridiculous. I feel far more sorry for the man on the street who lost his job due to an unforeseen reason and now he can’t pay the bills.
I believe in freedom of speech but then own the repercussions of that.
That’s just it about dyslexia, you have to learn things in a different way. I can’t imagine dyslexic people usually make the best lawyers, where they have to read lots of information, understand it accurately and often communicate accurately via email, but I bet you’re much better at absorbing information in different formats than the average person.
Why people are so fat? Wow…another controversial topic! 🙂

Comment #79What’s really weird is that I’m finding myself suppressing what I’d like to see, down to players that are merely an upgrade on what we’ve got.
14 years of conditioning is tough to remove. I’m in “don’t get your hopes too high” mode, rather than “we’ve got the richest owners in the World” mode.
So far, although on flimsy evidence, I’m happy with apparent moves/direction the club is taking. Just not allowing myself to get carried away.
Aruba (PEA), I would have bitten hand off for only 6 months ago. So, I suspect he hasn’t deteriorated that much since then. Loan without obligation is fine. He’ll be putting himself into our and everyone else’s shop window and will play out of his skin for 5 Months. I’d live with that + another striker.
