With Lille playing hardball over center-back Sven Botman, alternative targets are starting to do the rounds. Yesterday, Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck was mentioned as a potential target.
The German has a bright future at just 22-years-old and shares some similar qualities to Botman. He is entering the final 18 months of his contract unlike the Dutchman, who is tied down until 2025.
The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has added another name into the mix in Sevilla’s Diego Carlos. Though at 28, he doesn’t possess the future potential that makes Botman and Schlotterbeck so enticing.
Carlos is right-footed, and with Newcastle reportedly coveting a left-footer like Botman and Schlotterbeck, he is not exactly a like-for-like alternative. Though he has attributes that would instantly improve Newcastle’s backline
Being Brazilian, Carlos is very capable on the ball. He is considered an outstanding, if sometimes rash, defender, and is very good in the air. Though not to the extent of the younger duo. He has also been linked with the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Barcelona in the recent past.
Carlos joined Sevilla from Ligue 1’s Nantes in the summer of 2019 for £13.5m. His current price tag would be around £30m making him a more expensive option than someone like Matthias Ginter, who has just six months left on his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach.
Luke Edwards, earlier today, reported that Newcastle prefer at least one of the two center-backs they hope to bring in have some Premier League experience. He named Arsenal’s Rob Holding, Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, Burnley’s James Tarkowski, Everton’s Mason Holgate, Liverpool’s Nat Phillips, and Tottenham’s Joe Rodon as being on the extensive list of targets.
Newcastle likely haven’t thrown in the towel on Botman just yet. Though the aim is to bring in defenders early in the window with Kieran Trippier inching ever closer to becoming a Magpie. So we’ll see if this link to Carlos continues to bubble away or if it is fleeting like so many others.

Comment #121For anyone questioning Coady, Tarkowski etc. a couple of questions…
1 – if Lascelles, Clark, Schar, Fernandez, or Manquillo left NUFC, what level of club do you think they would join to be a first team starter?
2 – if Tarkowski or Coady left Burnley or Wolves, what level of club do you think they would join to be a first team starter?

Comment #122Dyslexic God, that copy and paste is fairly out of date considering it’s talking about Wolves going down

Comment #126I would be happy with anyone we’ve been mentioned or associated with. But we have that luxnow of being able to choose. So no complaints from me if Auba or Umteti or Tarkowski or anyone like that signs it’s all a plus tbh

Comment #127If it was a case of getting PEA towards the end of the window, then i wouldn’t mind as much. As hopefully it means it’s being seen as back up plan in case we can’t get the striker targets higher up on our list. Try to get others in, if all else fails loan PEA at the end of January. You’d think we need a striker in for our January fixtures though as they are very winnable and crucial games. So you’d think we want a striker in ASAP.
If we don’t/can’t get anyone else in then I won’t complain if PEA comes in, i’d just rather it was someone else and we try other targets first.

Comment #128Yes Tinman, I read it properly after I published. Possibly not the correct way around, but it does show even that long ago, how much it costs to be relegated.

Comment #131I would definitely take Tarkowski over our 4 centre backs.
He would be a big improvement on them.
Lascelles has lost it and his confidence is shot to s…t.
Fed is always injured and there has been something funny going on with him off. the field.
Schar injury prone to slow.
Clark I don’t need to say anything brutal .

I promised (threatened) to put a paragraph or two of my novel(s) on the blog.
This bit is actually football related, so some possible interest there.
‘The group starting following an ascending wooded trail indicated by Sophia and after about half an hour of steady climbing Sam was a bit startled when Sophia fell in beside him. He looked at her with a feeling of apprehension wondering what she was going to do or say. “So Mr Tompkins,” she said “you support Newcastle United?”
“Err, what?” he stuttered, not sure if he had heard her correctly.
A bigger smile lit up her face and she said, “Before you started giving us monosyllabic answers one of the highly secret items of information that you volunteered was that you supported Newcastle United.”
“What’s she on aboot? Monosyphilic answers? Is she saying aah got a disease of some sort?” he wondered in puzzlement and then brightened up mentally. “Aah. aye Newcassel. Aavh been ganning teh see them since aah was a bairn. Best team in the world like, although wih ganning through a bit of a bad patch at the moment, or wor before the waar started, being stuck in the second division an aall.”
“Surely you mean the best team after Cardiff?” said Alec joining in the discussion. “Cardiff! They’re a fourth division team. Whey, they’re not even English man!” retorted Sam.
“Maybe, but they do play in the English league and they are the only team to win the cup outside of England.”
“Aye that’s true, but that was a lang time ago.” agreed Sam condescendingly.
“Neither can hold a candle to the Hammers. Pride of North London they are.” interjected Julian, deciding to add fuel to the discussion.
“What, West Ham United, are yeh kidding?” scoffed Sam “Whey, they’re not even the best team in London!”
Can add more if anyone is interested!

Hard to tell cause there’s conflicting reports. If this is the club which said “No”, there’s still a chance, cause as i explained, their politic is to sell if you meet their price.
But if it came from the player as other reports suggest it, it’s over.

Now there you go. The Torres report never mentioned his infection and isolation nor the fact that Barc can’t play him until they get their wage bill down. Naughty naughty media!
But, the point I was trying to get across was that we ideally need players who really want to buy in to NUFC’s rebuild. It’d be nice to have a Keegan-like charmer. Why not put your CV into Amanda – I’m sure she’d be bowled over by your charm.
As is, I’m re-reading Bill Bryson’s Neither Here Nor There’, and he refers to an acquaintance with members of The Family in a Sorrento restaurant.

Comment #138I believe the club is trying to bring in more Brazilians to accommodate Joelinton. I feel they also know there are plenty of Brazilians and portuguese speakers in the world that are top quality footballers that are within our reach and would improve the team and are looking at bringing some in.

Don’t re-write history. The country and Parliament were in favour of going to war in Iraq. It is only when our guys dying due to terrorism, etc, generally stoked by Iran that people here wanted out of Iraq.
