There are multiple journalists now reporting that Kieran Trippier will become a Magpie in the next few days. The journalist who first reported of Newcastle’s interest in the right-back, Guillem Balage, has taken to Twitter with the following:
Trippier close to leaving, mostly his decision. Newcastle had his go ahead as far back as November and fee could be around £13m. Simeone appreciates him so much that he changed to title winning system to 5-3-2 to accommodate him. But he wouldnt stop anyone who wants to leave https://t.co/W9o5tBcVZz
— Guillem Balague (@GuillemBalague) January 4, 2022
Balague is referencing a report in AS that Trippier will head to Newcastle today to complete a move believed to be for around £13m. The 31-year-old was not in training this morning and has reportedly said his goodbyes to his Atletico teammates.
Newcastle should have their first signing tied up over the next few days. The transfer is a massive boost for Eddie Howe and our new owners, who identified the right-back as a top target early on.
Trippier is leaving the defending La Liga champions and Champions League football for a relegation battle on Tyneside. His desire to return to England to be closer to his family as well as his close relationship with Howe were said to be strong factors in his decision.
Without any hiccups, Trippier should be a Magpie as early as tomorrow. That will give him plenty of time to integrate into the squad in time for the massive Watford match on January 15th.
Newcastle are also expected to announce that this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Cambridge United has been sold-out. We should see an absolutely rocking St. James’ Park on Saturday should this transfer finally go through.

Comment #6TheTinman – That’s my feeling too pretty much. Don’t think Schar would be in a top La Liga side but I think he’ll go to Spain, France or Italy in the summer

Comment #8ITUNDERASHELL – there are conspiracy theories out there and there are bona fide facts of things that are happening, which are often so much worse. Powerful people like us to be fighting about the former and totally ignoring the latter. That’s a serious topic you posted about. Not one to discuss more on this blog but definitely an interesting topic that people should be more aware of.

Good day chaps’
I promised (threatened) to put a paragraph or two of my novel(s) on the blog.
This bit is actually football related, so some possible interest there.
‘The group starting following an ascending wooded trail indicated by Sophia and after about half an hour of steady climbing Sam was a bit startled when Sophia fell in beside him. He looked at her with a feeling of apprehension wondering what she was going to do or say. “So Mr Tompkins,” she said “you support Newcastle United?”
“Err, what?” he stuttered, not sure if he had heard her correctly.
A bigger smile lit up her face and she said, “Before you started giving us monosyllabic answers one of the highly secret items of information that you volunteered was that you supported Newcastle United.”
“What’s she on aboot? Monosyphilic answers? Is she saying aah got a disease of some sort?” he wondered in puzzlement and then brightened up mentally. “Aah. aye Newcassel. Aavh been ganning teh see them since aah was a bairn. Best team in the world like, although wih ganning through a bit of a bad patch at the moment, or wor before the waar started, being stuck in the second division an aall.”
“Surely you mean the best team after Cardiff?” said Alec joining in the discussion. “Cardiff! They’re a fourth division team. Whey, they’re not even English man!” retorted Sam.
“Maybe, but they do play in the English league and they are the only team to win the cup outside of England.”
“Aye that’s true, but that was a lang time ago.” agreed Sam condescendingly.
“Neither can hold a candle to the Hammers. Pride of North London they are.” interjected Julian, deciding to add fuel to the discussion.
“What, West Ham United, are yeh kidding?” scoffed Sam “Whey, they’re not even the best team in London!”
Can add more if anyone is interested!

Comment #13On selling the club, although we tend to forget and often knock a number of players for various reasons (often correct ones), we do have at least 5 x current Internationals in our squad, plus a few former U23 etc .
So although our league position is precarious although thankfully not adrift, new players aren’t coming in to play with a bunch of “Tractor Boys”, (with apologies to Ipswich) we do have some talent in our squad, but we’ve recently (until Eddy arrived) not had anyone who could get a tune out of them. 🙂

Comment #20Zhongguo Geordie – you basically put all of those players in the Championship next season apart from Schar then. I’m amazed that you think Schar could join a PL team higher up in the league than us mind you. I definitely don’t rate him highly enough to think he would play for a top half PL team like Wolves. Who our of Coady, Saiss, or Kilman do you think Schar would replace?

Comment #26cleveleysbob – However, our best players (ASM and Wilson) are not currently internationals…
Our squad isn’t the selling point to new players, the selling point is the upwards journey they’ll be on over the next few years. Not many players get to join a club and know they’ll be on that trajectory.

I wasn’t thinking that deep into it. Just a team of that level who play football which is most teams these days.
Lascelles suits a low block so Burnley although I’d not be surprised to see him do better, maybe Rafa at Everton.

Comment #30The Trippier signing hopefully should open the floodgates for others to follow.
Trippier at full back, Digne on the other side, Botman in the centre of defence,
Wijnaldum strengthening midfield and a top striker like Nunez or Alvarez up front would see us good to go. Every department of the team vastly improved.
Go for it Amanda.

Comment #37Zhongguo Geordie – Yeah, I don’t rate Schar that highly. I agree with the earlier comment that he’d do better outside of the PL to be honest. He seems to make too many mistakes for this league, a bit like a much worse version of Stones.
Would actually be interesting to see if Rafa comes in for any of our players…
