Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie is reporting that Newcastle have agreed on a fee with Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier. The deal is reportedly for £12m plus add-ons with the 31-year-old due to travel to Newcastle for his medical.
BREAKING: Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier. The deal is for around £12m plus add-ons. The England international is set to travel to Tyneside for his medical and become the first signing of the Saudi-backed regime #NUFC w/@PeteGravesTV

This report is also confirmed by Fabrizio Romano who has given his signature ‘here we go’ which generally means this one is all but over the line.
Kieran Trippier’s set to join Newcastle from Atletico Madrid as expected, done deal and here-we-go. ??? #NUFC
New ownership first signing completed after negotiations started in December.
Club sources talk of £12m plus add ons as per @SkySports_Keith – final fee not clear yet. pic.twitter.com/m7kOc17hPe

Trippier was identified early on as a top target. The right-back has a great relationship with manager Eddie Howe from their Burnley days. While the add-ons could amount to quite a bit, this is an outstanding first signing of the new era.
Newcastle have moved swiftly for their top targets. We reportedly also have tried to bring Lille center-back Sven Botman in for around £30m though the French club is reluctant to sell in this window.
Newcastle may work to test their resolve but if they prove resolute, there are numerous other targets Newcastle can pursue. Newcastle may give Lille a little more time before moving on.
Getting Trippier in so early in the window means he will be integrated into the squad in time for our next Premier League match against Watford in 11 days. While he may not play, he will get his first glimpse of a sold-out St. James’ Park this weekend for our FA Cup tie against Cambridge.

£12m for me even at 31, is an unbelievable bit of business by the current transfer team / temp DOF, even with add-ons taking into account he apparently had a £30m buy-out clause, I’d say good business, first piece of the jigsaw and will hopefully cause a knock-on affect with other players, only thing I would be a little concerned about is the reported £130k p/week wages, I hope some of the current squad don’t start getting the green eyed monster expecting to be brought up to a similar level straight away, for me everyone already in that team need to earn their place / future at the club before even going down that route.

In recent years the success ratio for SPL players has actually been pretty good hardly any flops
2 of best left backs in the league Robertson and Tierney
Mcginn is one of the best midfielders in the league outside the top 6
Van Dijk of course
Eduaord is starting to find his feet at Palace
Patterson just signed for Everton
Plenty of good talent if properly scouted

Comment #86Great signing to get Trippier. I’m not going to delve into the transfer fee too much but it’s also great that we haven’t overpaid. But if it is the figure quoted, shows how much some of the ITK’s actually know…
Surely there’s nobody on the blog who genuinely thinks this is a bad signing? Kets doesn’t count…

Comment #89It’s actually a great year/ time to be buying fringe international players who are currently fringe players at clubs but who want to show their international managers what they can do in the last 12 months before the World Cup.
I’d be targeting good quality international players who are desperate for continuous 1st team action before the World Cup.
Plenty out there and probably some value as well.
Onwards and upwards

Comment #90Also like I mentioned earlier, if I was a club and Newcastle wanted to do business with me, I’d be getting in early now. Doing business with us now helps build a good relationship which could be beneficial to the selling club years down the line. Could be that Athletico are thinking this too. Down the line if they need to generate money, they can ask us if we’re interested. If we have a superb squad in the next few years, they can approach us to loan some amazing fringe players we have.
We could be a powerhouse in a few years time. If I was a club I would be wanting to get in our good books ASAP to have potential benefits down the line.

Ref your glasses. If you got them online, did you provide them with a PD (Pupillary Distance) measurement?
I bought prescription safety varifocals and had simular issues to what you describe. Turns it incorrect PD was the problem.

Comment #94Players with 6 months to go are they way forward.
You’re guaranteeing them first team football leading to WC, so they can concentrate on football with no distractions worrying about a new club.
Their parent club will usually be happy to receive a fee rather than lose them for nothing.
Usually they’re already looking or ready to move in anyways.
They’re cheaper just because they only have 6 months left.
I reckon I’d have only targeted players with 6 months left if I was running the show.
Looked a while back, serious quality and plenty of options available.
No brainer

in an ideal world bring botman in and someone like coady someone with league experience
for me botman is for next season bringing him in now would be great to bed him in also stops other teams finding the money to buy him
looks like joelinton is first name on the team sheet in midfeild so we need a player or 2 that will help him excel in his new position

Got them at Specsavers and eye test there, tried them at loads of different angles and the near sight is in the top and distance in the bottom. That’s not right and not sure how they’ve managed that.

Should have another two and half seasons at the top of his game left in him, perhaps more injuries and personal drive to stay in top shape dependent.

Comment #115Really pleased with Trippier. Always rated him. Don’t think Eddie and the team up top will look at any players that Eddie doesn’t believe will commit. Hope we get another in this week, but I do think after defence we really need a striker in. Can Anderson play up front?
Also, seen a few people post about writing/books recently on here. I published a book in 2019 called Bird Therapy. It’s about the benefits of birdwatching for mental health and how it ties in with my own recovery. It had some celebrity backing (Bill Bailey, Chris Packham) and might be of interest to, well, maybe one other person on here.

I don’t take the piss out of him and expect him to reply.
If I insult someone I expect it back and vice versa.
Seems some are far to comfortable insulting people from a computer, then run crying when the tables get turned or people can’t be bothered with them
People always see the behaviour yet ignore the behaviour that caused it!

Comment #118On the wages situation. I would be delighted if I thought some new players would help the team survive and give me the opportunity to keep earning a Premier League salary. I wouldn’t give a toss how much the new players earned. Not forgetting a tasty bonus for avoiding relegation. Then get a decent move at the end of the season with a bumper signing on fee as the club give me a free to get my wages off the books. Win,Win,Win. Yippee.
