Newcastle have reached an agreement in principle to sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for around £12m plus add-ons. Initial reports had the add-ons reaching almost double the initial fee. However, some are now reporting that to not be the case.
David Ornstein with The Athletic believes that add-ons will add just a little more to the £12m Newcastle will pay upfront. The extras likely pertain to a clause that will be triggered should Newcastle avoid relegation.
Trippier is due on Tyneside tomorrow morning to undergo his medical and ultimately complete his move to Newcastle. He’ll mark the first signing of the new era of the club.
Luke Edwards with The Telegraph confirms much of what has been reported. However, he adds that Newcastle are taking it one transfer at a time. Now that Trippier is practically a Magpie, the plan could be to target Everton left-back Lucas Digne.
Edwards believes a move for the French international could develop quickly. The 28-year-old is out of favor at Goodison Park since a falling out with Rafa Benitez early last month. Everton completed the signing of left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko from Dynamo Kyiv on New Years Day.
Digne is reportedly valued at around £25m as he signed an extension to 2025 less than a year ago. The Frenchman has extensive experience at some elite clubs with stints at PSG Roma, and Barcelona before moving to Everton in 2018. He has been capped 43 times for France.
The attacking left-back would be an instant upgrade though Jamal Lewis did play very well when recalled by Howe before his recent hamstring injury. Chelsea also hold an interest in Digne after losing Ben Chilwell for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

Comment #4Seriously would be creaming if we goy Digne too
The service to our front men would improve massively with quality crosses coming from either wing

Comment #5We’ll still need a striker, to cover for Wilson, that’s a must, he’s very injury prone, plus we could go two up front, with a proven striker, get it done . 😉

We truly are blessed with the beaches towns and countryside of Northumberland.
I’m off up kielder for a weekend of winter skies end of the month, didn’t bother with observatory with things as they are.
Still see plenty if it’s clear.

Did you know he started as CB but converted because he couldn’t get in the side.
Pretty sure it was Baresi keeping him out, keep anyone out.

Comment #13Just my opinion but i dont think we will sign more than 4 players as its very difficult to intergrate to many players into any squad, for me the next priority signings should be a good central defender, a quality midfielder and another good striker, we probably really need 2 strikers as Wilson is a bit injury prone, but ill be surprised if we sign more than 4 players for the reasons i`ve given HWTL

Was just coming here to clarify the confusion about Trippier’s partner being from the North East. I mentioned Oxlade-Camberlain’s partner being Perrie from Little Mix yesterday and how she might suggest he sign for us so she can be closer to her family in Shields.
Again, not saying I want to sign him, but a player’s partner can sometimes be in their ear about stuff like that and influence them 🙂

Comment #18Magimac…if we’re gonna survive we’ll need more than that…they won’t all be playing at the same time, but with good squad rotation and injury cover we’ll do it.
Strength and depth an absolute priority…gone are the days of relying on the same 13 players

Look at the quality of crosses from Digne you can suddenly get players gambling and making late runs with that kind of ball in
What I like about him is he is like Trippier very aggressive in the tackle too many years of Richie , Clark etc back pedalling into our own 18 yard box should hopefully be a thing of the past

Comment #23The next bit if anyone is interested!
“Oh, we went teh Blaayden races was on the ninth of June
eighteen hundred and sixty two on a summers afternoon,
we cawt the bus at Balmbra’s and it wor heavy laden,
away wih went doon Collingwood Street that’s on the way teh Blaayden.”
“Noow the chorus. Are yeh ready?”
“Oh me lads, yeh should have seen us ganning,
passing the fowlks alaang the road just as they were stannin,
there was aall the lads and lassies there aall wih smiling fayces,
ganning alang the Scotswood Rooooohhd, teh see the Blaayden races.
Sam repeated the chorus till he was satisfied that everyone had got it and then proceeded to sing the rest of the verses of the “Blaydon Races”. Everyone soon learnt the chorus and joined in with gusto. Sam had a coarse, deep, gravelly voice which actually lent itself to the mood of the song. Sophia did not use her husky, sexual stage-voice but joined in with a clear and beautiful operatic quality performance that contrasted well with Sam’s. Randi caused great amusement by singing a solo version in Hindi but with an almost perfect Geordie accent which had everyone falling about with laughter. Jessica’s attempt to try the same with a cod sexy French version had the same result but only because she had such an awful singing voice.
“Beautiful, Miss Barnes!” exclaimed Julian laughingly in the sarcastic voice that he had off to perfection, holding his nose as he said it.
“Why thank you Mr McCarthy. So gallant of you to say so!” she replied also laughing and giving a mock curtsey.
The mood changed abruptly as Sophia suddenly stopped and held up her hand in a gesture to halt and for the noise to cease. “I am sorry but our destination is quite close and I will need to go ahead to let the people at the camp know we are coming.”
“Whoa, I thought you said it was a disused mining facility?” said Calhoun in an accusative tone.

Evening to you sir! If we do sign five or six players, especially if we can do it with a few days to spare before our next game then Eddie could have a few training sessions with them all to help them gel and get used to his tactics and playing together.
I know there’s no substitute for actual competitive game time, but they’ll get plenty of that before the season ends. The likes of Trippier and Digne have Premier League experience, so they should adapt quickly I hope.

Comment #33Trippier for £12m sounds cheap but the devil is in the detail these days… Not the fee but the contract bonuses, signing bonus and wage.
We’ve bought out his contract for the remaining 6 months at £2m per month. If they hadn’t sold he’d likely have left on a free for the last big pay day.
He’ll have been given signing bonus and there’s likely a survival fee add on. So let go with the assumed initial £12m + 3m then he’s on reportedly upto £130k PW that’s an increase in wage bill over the first six months of £3.3m.
So from players wage / transfer budget for this season it’s £18m+ bonuses. Now next question is how long will his contract be? At £6.6m a year? If he’s tied up for a few years it’ll stack up.
Don’t get me wrong it’s a great signing but until you factor in the contract, bonuses and wages you don’t see the full picture. The transfer fee was lowish because we were only buying out a 6 month contract.
Looking at the fee alone is missing alot of factors to the deal out.

I’ve never met Perrie but her grandmother is a friend of the family back in Shields. She’s scored some tickets for my brother’s daughters whenever they play a concert in Newcastle.
Couldn’t tell you any of Little Mix’s songs or owt like that, but she seems like a canny lass from what I’ve heard 🙂
