There were multiple reports out yesterday that Newcastle have (almost) agreed a deal of £25M (with add-ons) to bring Kieran Trippier to Newcastle and make him the very first signing for Newcastle’s new (very rich) regime.
Trippier missed training at Atlético Madrid yesterday, which adds to the hope he could be on his way to Newcastle.
The next big news we should wait for is that he’s actually on his way to Newcastle or he has arrived on Tyneside to undergo a medical and sign across the dotted line.
But there’s more good news this morning from the Mail’s Craig Hope.
Hope says Newcastle will sign the 35 times capped 31-year-old England International for an initial fee of only £12M and there will be various add-ons, depending on how he does at Newcastle.
Hearing fee for Kieran Trippier is in region of £12m (likely to be add-ons) & NUFC are still expecting movement this week.
— Craig Hope (@CraigHope_DM) January 4, 2022
If this is true, it would be a terrific deal for the Tyneside club.
Ir would also show the recrutiment team we have in place has some (very) good negotiating skills.
If this report is true, it will reflect well on Nick Hammond and Steve Nickson, and the capture of Trippier would help bring in other top players before the end of the month.
If we indeed get Trippier, he will be almost a hero from the start of his Newcastle career, because he is the first top player to commit his future to the club, given our rather perilous position – second bottom – in the Premier League.
He will be an absolutely stupendous (that means very good) acquisition for us – if we can get him.
🙂
Here’s hoping !!!!!!

Newcastle are progressing in talks and working to reach total agreement with Atletico. Fee around £25m. Still same feeling: it’s getting closer.

Comment #6Not complaining but 12M seems a bit low for a player of Trippier`s quality but hey if we can get him for that then great.

Rumour has it http://A.Madrid wanted no less than £25m for Trippier. Newcastle bid again…this time £20m + Clark. The Spanish giants swiftly responded by lowering their asking price to £12m #nufc

I hope this price hasn’t been put out by agents trying to whip up interest to help with wage negotiations! I think that’s too low to be true!

Comment #10Out of all the players we have been linked with i think Trippier is the only one i am confident of bringing in, the rest is just hearsay and BS really.
We need a striker in now more than any other position imo, goals get you 3 points, and it`s goals we need more than a good RB.

Aye 12M sounds low mate. Loads of different quotes on the fee. It will be somewhere in between I’d imagine but I can’t see it being less than 20M.

Maybe Botman has a tad of substance behind it but `im not convinced on his ability, or certainly his ability to be a success in the PL.
The PL is a different animal to the French lge.
If he does sign and is a success then ile hold my hands up mate.
Got to get him over the line first though, remember that one.

Wouldn’t say it’s dragging, it’s only January 4th plus I think the Spanish transfer window only opened yesterday? Could be wrong on that but think that was the case. We aren’t used to even being in talks with players this early into a window so this is a huge improvement already.
John Tudor
What do you mean ‘full steam backwards’? Do you not think we’re moving forward? Do you not think we’ve been playing better, have a better ownership, better manager in place and are currently in talks with players this early into the transfer window? What exactly is moving ‘backwards’ in your eyes? It’s not even been a week of the window being open yet, yet we’re allegedly putting bids in for players, in negotiations with others and talking to clubs about other players. This is all much quicker than pretty much any window under the last ownership. Everything is moving forwards.

Comment #23Good to see we’re back to discussing football and away from politics which was ruining the blog.
I keep seeing comments about who is going to negotiate and sort out contracts? Well I would guess we still have the same legal and contracts staff that we had before so although Charnley, maybe, lead the negotiations then the legal team would have ‘dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s on the contracts so we still have that experience.

Ofc mate.
I’ve said before the window opened that there will be 2/3 surprise signings nobody seen coming and I still believe that.
Botman could be our Kompany and he really does have all the right abilities to be a fantastic player. I hope they get this one over the line.
It’s going to be a very busy few weeks

Comment #26The window hasn’t even been open a week yet and some fans are getting impatient lol
Calm down everyone. We’re moving faster than we’re used to, going for players who are bigger than we usually go for, bidding higher amounts than usual and reportedly talking to lots of clubs and players (some not even mentioned anywhere yet).
It’s all very positive. Just because nobody has signed in the first few days doesn’t mean there’s cause for concern.
Relax.

It`s certainly a breath of fresh air knowing at least this January window the club are serious about making additions and showing some ambition, unlike the scrooge like attitude of the previous oaf.

On your post of not being as easy we thought about getting the players in. My first thoughts after the takeover was Conte as manager. Out of work, £15M a year and a project to get on with. It never happened and that’s when the realisation that we’re starting from scratch hit home. It hasn’t helped that we started chalking up loads of games without a win and I still think in not sacking Bruce immediately we missed a trick. A win over Spurs would have changed the complexion completely. We will still get players over the line, obviously, but as you say not as easy as we first thought.

Comment #33I’d be surprised if the £12m Hope is reporting is true. It could of course be that low if there’s some big add ons involved, like £10m after so many appearences or something. I’d be surprised if it was structured like that and not upfront though.

I think a lot of us were the same. We got a bit carried away with excitement and thought we’d attract a manger like Conte to come in no problems, followed by a winning streak, big names in January and everything would be golden. Think slowly reality started to sink in a bit though and like you say we really are starting from scratch. In the end I think it’ll work in our favour though. Howe seems perfect for a rebuild and it’s probably better to build slowly and more soundly, rather than trying to get instant success and doing it 100mph.
We’ll get players in who will improve in and may be surprised at 1 or 2 we manage to attract. But it’s not going to be smooth sailing for us in any area during this project. I’m excited for all of it though.
