There were multiple reports out yesterday that Newcastle have (almost) agreed a deal of £25M (with add-ons) to bring Kieran Trippier to Newcastle and make him the very first signing for Newcastle’s new (very rich) regime.
Trippier missed training at Atlético Madrid yesterday, which adds to the hope he could be on his way to Newcastle.
The next big news we should wait for is that he’s actually on his way to Newcastle or he has arrived on Tyneside to undergo a medical and sign across the dotted line.
But there’s more good news this morning from the Mail’s Craig Hope.
Hope says Newcastle will sign the 35 times capped 31-year-old England International for an initial fee of only £12M and there will be various add-ons, depending on how he does at Newcastle.
Hearing fee for Kieran Trippier is in region of £12m (likely to be add-ons) & NUFC are still expecting movement this week.
— Craig Hope (@CraigHope_DM) January 4, 2022
If this is true, it would be a terrific deal for the Tyneside club.
Ir would also show the recrutiment team we have in place has some (very) good negotiating skills.
If this report is true, it will reflect well on Nick Hammond and Steve Nickson, and the capture of Trippier would help bring in other top players before the end of the month.
If we indeed get Trippier, he will be almost a hero from the start of his Newcastle career, because he is the first top player to commit his future to the club, given our rather perilous position – second bottom – in the Premier League.
He will be an absolutely stupendous (that means very good) acquisition for us – if we can get him.
🙂
Here’s hoping !!!!!!

Comment #41If this blog was a mental health condition it would definitely be bipolar. At one extreme we have the “Mbappe is coming” brigade and at the other extreme we have “The window’s been open several hours and we haven’t signed anybody – it’s a disaster” lot.
Surely everyone is feeling better now we have got rid of Ashley, have rich ambitious owners who want to do right by the club and the city and actually communicate? Plus (at times) a team that puts in a shift, even if the quality is lacking in parts.
Relegation is realistically the more likely scenario but the future is bright, so keep taking the tablets!

Comment #43When people say really starting from scratch, what do you mean?
Ofc we would start from scratch as it’s not like you can skip a few levels.
Even if we got Conte that would still mean we are starting from scratch.
We have the most ambitious and richest owners in the world but we are still starting from scratch

The club was abused for 14 years without any maintenance across the whole club.
We probably have to start more from scratch than any other side as we are behind in so many ways compared to every other club.
Be a slow build but a glorious one

Comment #48Adamn_92 @26 – Spot on and we have just emerged from the Christmas break (even people who run football clubs are allowed some time off at Christmas). Also you can’t approach players before the window (accusations of ‘tapping up’) unless they’re in the last 6 months of their contract.

Comment #50We have to remember that only Everton have signed somebody in the Premier League. Brentford got a back up keeper on loan I think too.
Trippier deal does seem to be rumbling on. But the video of him waving bye, now missing training. He is going somewhere, I haven’t heard any other clubs mentioned so you have to assume it is here. Hopefully done by Friday.
The trippier deal does seem to have dragged, but I imagine this is just the typical length of these things. We found out really early on about him which might make it feel longer. He has a history of letting his mates know if he is moving. He got fined when he moved to Spain because he heavily suggested to his friends in a WhatsApp group he was away there, and they all slammed money on him going there.
I’m sure we’ve got plenty of irons in the fire. And I think we will sign at least 2 players we don’t get linked with until last minute. I’m also hopeful of a flurry of signings to come in at once, to really make a statement.
We’ve still got 10 days or so before our next game so we aren’t missing out on them too much. Nonetheless it would be nice to have them in an training.
I do have to express disappointment that we didn’t sign someone really early on though. Digne has been out of favour and is obviously moving, he is just in Everton so we could have been away to see him. After all Rafa signed his replacement on day 1. But perhaps Digne is hopeful of a Chelsea loan deal or similar, we might not ever know.
Fingers crossed, I’m anxious to get going, but keeping the faith that it’s going to lift off soon!

Comment #56I am very hopeful about this window. I’m not expecting a number of world class players at their peak to sign for us permanently. I’m not expecting us to “steal” players for the starting 11 of top European teams. However, I am expecting some top quality loans and maybe a couple of very good permanent additions, such as Trippier. There’s a WC later this year and players want regular football, and we can offer good wages and massive bonuses for staying up.
I am not certain that we will stay up, mind. It’s very much starting to look like 3 from 4 will go down.

Comment #57If we’d got a Conte type manager and been in a position to sign top PL players this window that wouldn’t have really been starting from scratch, we’d have been aiming for top six at the very least next year. As much as we’ve taken to him Eddie H was nobody’s first choice. Ergo we are starting from scratch imo.

Not to mention numerous managers always make a point of saying how tricky the January window is. Some fans just need to be realistic I think, we’ll bring in players but if we don’t in the first week it’s no cause for concern.
Mund
Starting from scratch as in we need to build infrastructure, facilities, hire staff in important roles we haven’t had for years, build a youth team set up, stadium needs work, need to build the squad up in terms of clearing out dead wood and bringing players in short term and long term, new sponsorship deals, expanding the club globally and the list goes on. There’s been so much mismanagement for 14 years that almost every part of the club need’s evaluating and likely altering, replacing or changed entirely. It’s as much of a club starting from scratch in the top league as it could be really.

Even with someone like Conte in, top 6 the year after would have been really pushing it and fairly unrealistic. I mean starting from scratch in terms of how much work needs doing to the club overall.

Whatever the situation we were starting from scratch. Conte or Klopp or Pep coming in would still mean we are starting from scratch. We are so far behind every other club there was no choice but to start from scratch.
You say in a position of signing top players?
Is Trippier not regarded as a top player?

Comment #69I’m fairly confident we’re looking at at least 4 players this window – by order of priority I’d say we’re in dire need of:
– CB
– ST
– FB
– CM/CDM (either a ball-carrier or a ball playing defensive midfielder)
That should be sufficient to keep us up between now and summer before a much more radical overhaul of the squad is underway. It has been mentioned a few times online and in the Ronny Gill about how Trippier’s signing is a real statement of intent that we can use as a signal to other quality players.
I like that we’re looking at highly promising young centre halves from Europe like Botman and Schlotterbeck but given the immediate choice of them over a Coady or Tarkowski, given the circumstances I’d go for one of the latter given their experiences in relegation dog fights and PL experience. 1 from each camp would be the dream!
Seeing how active we’ve been in the first few days of the window has been a breath of fresh air. Given our next league match isn’t for a few weeks too this gives us a chance to get them in and get a few sessions under their belts too. We may actually get out of the sh*t after all but worst comes to worst, the second half of this season should be a real rollercoaster!

Comment #70Unfortunately, I don’t see it as starting from scratch. Starting from scratch is a blank slate with nothing to fix. Under Ashley we were a basket case of a club, completely ruined and so mismanaged that we need to undo the mistakes before we can progress. I bet even now they are finding various timeboms and issues hidden under layers of deceit & bureaucracy. All things that take longer to rectify than institute correctly from new, a bit like rebuilding an old manor house rather than a nice new build.
