Report – Newcastle Get Bargain Buy For Kieran Trippier

There were multiple reports out yesterday that Newcastle have (almost) agreed a deal of £25M (with add-ons) to bring Kieran Trippier to Newcastle and make him the very first signing for Newcastle’s new (very rich) regime.

Trippier missed training at Atlético Madrid yesterday, which adds to the hope he could be on his way to Newcastle.

The next big news we should wait for is that he’s actually on his way to Newcastle or he has arrived on Tyneside to undergo a medical and sign across the dotted line.

But there’s more good news this morning from the Mail’s Craig Hope.

Hope says Newcastle will sign the 35 times capped 31-year-old England International for an initial fee of only £12M and there will be various add-ons, depending on how he does at Newcastle.

If this is true, it would be a terrific deal for the Tyneside club.

Ir would also show the recrutiment  team we have in place has some (very) good negotiating skills.

If this report is true, it will reflect well on Nick Hammond and Steve Nickson, and the capture of Trippier would help bring in other top players before the end of the month.

If we indeed get Trippier, he will be almost a hero from the start of his Newcastle career, because he is the first top player to commit his future to the club, given our rather perilous position – second bottom – in the Premier League.

He will be an absolutely stupendous (that means very good)  acquisition for us – if we can get him.

🙂

Here’s hoping !!!!!!

Infrastructure aside, what I’m talking about in starting from scratch is what a club like ours can attract and what is now realistic. Man City had that rich Thai bloke before the Mansours and players like Kompany on their books. These have inherited a championship set up in a PL stadium. Attracting a Conte type manager from the off would have pushed the project on a quicker trajectory. No offence to Eddie H who, as you all know I’m right behind.

BOB, that would make sense from what I read today, £125K/week was being mentioned. Currently he is on £80K/week

Not trying to be the opposite here but IMO having Conte come in wouldn’t of pushed us on a level or two as I believe he would of struggled with this squad and his ways. It would of been a mistake in bringing him in at this early stage.

Having a regarded top manager doesn’t push us forward only results do.

We would still need to rebuild from top to bottom in every area across the club.

Build from the bottom up, try to make (most) signings better than you have. This could take 10 years.

    Dyslexic,
Perhaps the Saudis could build one of them 1000km/hr bullet trains to connect St James to London, Paris, BerlIn. Then our players can live where they want and be in London in 20 minutes. They could afford it.

    Mund,
That is my whole point, if we’d been able to attract Conte it would be because we weren’t in this mess, had we of been tenth we may well have got him and therefore in a position to make audacious bids for the likes of Sterling in January.

It was simply not possible to believe that the buying price had dropped that much. He’s supposed to have “buy out” clause of between €40-50M.

Because he’s in the last 6 -18Months of his contract (depending on which report you believe) he was always going to be bought for less than that, the exact amount was the subject of the negotiation, but Athletico had the upper hand, so it was never going to drop down to €15M.

    Doesn’t make sense.

Craig Hope had moved on from negotiating with club to player in his report (in my opinion) and like any decent journo should try to be ahead of the action. 🙂

I also don’t mind if PIF want to buy Inter or AC Milan to become our feeder club !!
But Amanda did say in November, “We talked to Inter Milan, AC Milan, but the problem was the structure of the league was a mess. We looked briefly at Bordeaux. But we’re not looking at Inter [any more].”

We have been in this position all season so there was no chance of anything other than starting from scratch.

    It is what it is.

Let’s be honest here there was a good few fans and yourself included who couldn’t see us signing Trippier never mind Sterling.

So I don’t think being in our predicament will hurt us in transfer deals as you suggest it could.

Come end of January we will all be extremely happy with who has come in I have no doubt about that.

    @GraemeBailey
Newcastle believe they can get deal for Kieran Trippier done at £15m.

Atletico had been looking for £25m last summer. They have now accepted that the player wants to move to England and are now brokering price.

I think the club first need to be able to show it’s capable of reaching great heights and becoming a powerhouse before we can think of superstar players or managers. That will take at least another year or 2. As it won’t be just down to league finishes, it’ll be about what’s been done in the background to prepare the club for long terms sustainable progress and success. A lot of that will come from investment into facilities so we can show them off to players/managers etc. We can finish 7th and say we’re on the up but if we gave a tour of our current facilities, I bet that would turn away a fair few people. We need the club to be attractive in every way, not just because we can flash a bit of money at someone.

Like you say the facilities are a mess and we are so far behind it’s not even funny but I do think when selling the dream to any player they will of spoke about the plans and the ambition of were they want the club and the upgrades that will follow.

I think we need to pull on the reins and accept where we are right now and who we’re going to be able to attract given our current circumstances. In all reality, we are looking more likely to still get relegated than to not be and that is going to weigh heavily on the minds of many potential players.

Not to mention the difficulty inherent in bedding in multiple players in January to then go straight into a relegation dogfight where the odds are stacked against us. We need players who can help us now, but can stick with us through a possible Championship rebuild. There will be zero global megastars and as much as ability will be assessed so too will mentality.

Howe is the perfect example of the sort of manager who matches that profile – Premier League experience and can take us towards top half, but also capable of taking on a rebuild in the Championship should the worst happen. This is why Coady or Tarkowski would be class signings. Anyone who doesn’t rate Tarkowski and are basing it on his poor form this season wouldn’t know a top centre half if they slapped them in the face.

I agree, but I think talking about the plans and ambition will work on some people but not everyone. It’s all well and good having big ambitious plans, but unless you can back it up with actual progress towards them, it’s just talk.

I’m not suggesting the new owners are just talk in the slightest. But it will take a year or two to get facilities, infrastructure, sponsorship, stadium, staff and the squad in a position where we can show true progress is being made and those ambitions can be reached.

the club has been ran into the ground for 14 years solid, its been neglected from the academy to the seniors squads ect ect ect its going to take a fair few years to put this right 5 to 10 years at least remember rome was not built in a day 😉

I’m not sure if ‘up for a relegation battle’ is an actual trait a player has or one that is overly important when recruiting in all honesty.

We need players who want to play for the club and are professionals. If they’re professional enough, they’ll give their all if we are sitting in 20th, 7th or 1st.

I don’t think there’s some magical traits a player has that means they’re more up for a relegation fight than others. What would those traits be? Determination? Spirit? Leadership? Fight? Calmness? All things you can get in a player regardless of if they play in England, have been in a relegation fight or not or if they play abroad at the top of their league.

If a player is a good enough and professional enough, they’ll perform to their best abilities regardless of what position the club is in.

cleveleysbob – I’ve been banging on for ages about the complete crap being circulated by so called journalists…they’re taking advantage of the fans to make a living for themselves by just creating clickbait. Loads of the discussion here is just playing into their hands really…discussing linked players that would be just as valid if you or I made them up as these Z rated hacks.

Trippier interest is obviously real, what the transfer fee is and how it’s constructed, only a few people will actually know. Personally, I don’t care, we’ve got proper people at the helm now so I’m sure they’ll do the deal the best they can. Don’t know why some people get so hung up on reports of transfer fees to be honest.

Adamn_92 – I think it’s the drive when the incentive is just to maintain the status quo. Doesn’t matter what the players do this season, our league position isn’t going to mean promotion, European qualification, or any kind of serious statement about the club. There’s no glory to be had this year, only getting stuck in and making sure we’re in the same league next year.

I think the Trippier approach is sound business,£12M for a 31yr old with 6 months left on their contract, is a decent offer.

    The elite manager debate.
I hope we already have him on board, and that Howe goes on to prove what a great coach and team builder he is, whether we get relegated or not. I’m not interested in getting a ready made elite manager in say 3 years. Manager changes bring instability. Just look at Manure. I prefer to grow organically. Much more satisfying.

Let’s not forget Trippier is one of the best 5 or so RBs in the whole world. His time under Simeone whose teams play the best defensive football in Europe will only have done him good.

He looks as fit as a butchers dog. If we get 3-5 years out of him he is worth every penny of the originally quoted £31m.

Also Bob, I think with these fees like Adam said very few people know the details of them. There will be some leaks but it will get lost in translation between fee, fee + add ons, wages / contract worth, fee + add on + wages etc. And there’s nearly always confusion between € and £ with the figures quoted.
