Newcastle On The Brink Of Adding Premier League Striker – Report

There is breaking news this evening that Newcastle are close to signing Chris Wood of Burnley. According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, the 30-year-old is heading to Newcastle for his medical tonight and should be announced within 24 hours.

Wood emerged as a target after Newcastle’s defeat in the FA Cup to Cambridge over the weekend. After the game, it was confirmed that striker Callum Wilson would miss the next two months with his calf injury.

Interestingly, Wood shares the same agent as our new right-back Kieran Trippier. There has been talk that Wood has a release clause in his contract. Edwards can’t confirm if Newcastle triggered a clause or have reached an agreement with Burnley.

The New Zealand international is a proven Premier League goalscorer with 53 goals for Burnley since joining in 2017. It seems unlikely that Clarets boss Sean Dyche would sell his main striker to a relegation rival without a release clause being involved.

There are other journalists confirming this news with Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reporting that Newcastle have triggered a release clause believed to be around £20m.

If Newcastle can have Wood registered by noon on Thursday, he will be available to make his debut in the ultra-important match against Watford on Saturday. Hopefully, this gets done in the next few days.

Newcastle will pay full release clause to Burnley for Chris Wood. Fee around £20m, personal terms already agreed. Deal to be announced this week. White circleHandshake #NUFC

Newcastle could also sign another striker this winter if they find a good opportunity/talent.

To me that’s the sort of signings we should be after, solid players who will improve the team.
If we can pull off a big surprise or two near the end of the window then that is a bonus, but we just need to strengthen certain positions which shouldn’t be too hard.

20mill is a bit steep but strikers needed asap

Hoping a young striker also comes in, would love Zlahovic, Isak but a Nketiah will do.

Not our 1st choice but he is a striker and we don’t have one. He is big, strong and creates problems in the box. He’s a menace for other teams players. If anything he will create space for someone to score. And for the record, he will score this Saturday.

Not worth £20 million but a good signing never the less in our current position, knows the league very well and is proven to score at this level, another good signing by the club in my opinion HWTL

Let’s hope he’s not another Hendricks. He’s clearly no longer number 1 at Burnley but will do a great job of bringing our other forwards and midfield into play. Actually better than Wilson at that but not so good at running the channels. And if we still go down he’ll get us back up. A lot more mobile than Carroll and has a good attitude. We have to trust in Howe and his plan. Footy is a jigsaw puzzle and sometimes the most unassuming of players can unlock a teams potential.

Nobody can deny that we are desperate, pretty sure that’s why clubs are rasing their prices. It is what it is. Do what’s necessary to see this season through then start building a proper foundation

Interesting signing. Practical is the word that springs to mind.

I’m assuming there will be another striker brought in, too.

I’m happy enough if he is in the lineup for Watford. He is definitely a handful and can only assume will be paired up with a more mobile striker by the end of the month.

Either way, fair play to our owners – they’re moving quickly and managing it all with professionalism as far as I can see.

Note how links to Wood were quiet until it’s almost a done deal. If a player genuinely wants to come it won’t be a three week publicized saga.

Just as I was thinking of taking a break from the blog for a few days because of all the pessimism we go and bag Wood.

    Hard working honest striker.

Will hold it up better than Wilson and will get himself in the box. Doesn’t quite have that golden touch or turn of pace like Wilson but a great signing, and I could see them working together well.

Should have great synergy with Fraser and Trippier who can put in some quality balls.

Even better it takes a key player from a rival. Now it is them who has to try and sign a striker when they’re facing the drop.

And whoever said he is 3rd choice? He has started every game this season, what tosh.

Probably not the player we expected but certainly a player we could use. Premier experience, can draw in defenders and hold the ball up rather than pinging straight back to the defence plus makes negotiation for other players easier, not because of name recognition but because it makes us appear less desperate. It’s always easier to negotiate when the other party don’t think they have you over a barrell.

He’s alright £20 Mill seems excessive and he’s not exotic but he will put himself about and do a job…. Didn’t we let a similar striker go at start of season…. Wouldnt rock the boat if we went down and it looks a bit like a cover signing or incase we go down. I’ll take him at this moment.

As reported elsewhere Chris Wood is on his way to Tyneside for a medical after #nufc triggered release clause at #burnley. Botman and Digne have proved extremely difficult and hopes are fading there. Other defensive targets being actively pursued.

It’s one thing to try and buy the player by triggering the release clause but the player must also agree. Wood could decline to move. If he comes to us it is because he wants to. So Abonglahor can shove it.

Also, Chelsea did this to us when they signed Ba.

I’m impressed our owners are willing to fork out 20 million for Chris Wood. They understand our predicament and are willing to do what is necessary.

Great to see, how bloody refreshing.

Stop being negative lads. That’s a solid deal and 20mill isn’t ridiculous, although paying more would be leg lift territory.

It also shows that we can get deals done if clubs are half willing to play ball. Lille weren’t, so we can’t hang Mandy and our ex Celtic guy (what’s his name?) for that.

    He’s not a risk.

He’s a player who plays a certain type of way, nothing flashy. Not too much of a form player, generally consistent.

He knows the league and will hit the ground running.

He’s worth £10m, but in our situation £20m is absolutely fine.
