Newcastle are closing in on our second signing of this window in Burnley’s Chris Wood. With Callum Wilson out until March, Newcastle are bereft of options upfront so the 30-year-old will be a welcome addition.
Wood was on his way to Newcastle on Tuesday evening for a medical. The move has progressed rapidly with Newcastle’s interest not reported until after our FA Cup defeat to Cambridge this past weekend.
The Mail’s Craig Hope is reporting that Newcastle have triggered the striker’s £25m release clause which Newcastle may have been alerted to by the player’s agency, CAA Base, when signing Kieran Trippier.
Hope is also reporting that Burnley boss Sean Dyche is deeply disappointed that Wood chose to leave to a relegation rival. However, Newcastle represent an outstanding opportunity for the New Zealand international.
Hope has also added the name of Torino’s Gleison Bremer (shown above) to Newcastle’s list of center-back targets. The Brazilian is also represented by CAA Base and has been linked with Liverpool, Chelsea and West Ham recently.
The 24-year-old joined Torino from Mineiro in 2018 for just under £5m. It took him a while to find his feet in Italy but has since made 96 appearances with an impressive 17 goal contributions (12 goals and 5 assists).
Bremer is a no-nonsense defender who is capable with the ball at his feet. He is outstanding in the air and possesses great pace. He has also captained Torino over the past few months in the absence of reported Newcastle target Andrea Belotti, who is out with a hamstring injury.

Comment #81Since few would be willing to join a team mired in relegation battle, what we’ve managed so far by way of transfers is probably as good as it can get. As for Wood, other than heading and blocking a squad space he may contribute precious little. No sign yet that someone is being lined up to fix our midfield. Midfield, I think, is the most nagging problem that is holding us down.

Comment #82Atleast the owners now have some more time to iron out the deals without the impending deadline of the Watford game. I feel one or two of these clubs may cave in by the end of Jan or players may throw a fit. There is no way all these CBs/CFs are moving to the PL at > 50m this summer or next summer.

Comment #83Think the last few days of the window attitudes to the toon will change , theyll be approaching us , just need to get players with quality and the minerals for a battle . Wood is horses for courses signing just what we need . Centre back in for Watford game and boom we are up and running , 3pts bit of momentum and more players will want to jump on board the Toon Express. HWTL

Comment #84I think we might start with 5 at the back against Watford….Trippier Lascelles Dummett Schar Murphy….Transform to a 4 later if scores are even…

Comment #85I think we can now take a chance on Solanke or Bereton Diaz, Gayle would then definitely become surplus.

Comment #90We might see very different signings based on the results of the next 2 games. If we are out of the relegation zone, we may get Schick and/or Botman.

I think it’s still a step too far getting the likes of Schick, we can hope though.

Comment #92Wood has been a 1 in 3 striker for the best part of his career. It’s not an awful signing. But does definitely seem to be panic driven. He’ll run through a brick wall for us, that’s for sure

Comment #93I work with a lot of Lpool fans, last season they were shyting themselves over not qualifying for CL in case they lost Salah and couldn’t attract the players they wanted in the summer. That CL has massive pull, as Man U will find out next summer.

Would signing a £30M French kid not seem like a panic signing. It is an excellent piece of business all you’re doing is putting needless negative spin on it.

Chris Wood’s now prepared to undergo his medical as Newcastle player today. Contract to be signed in the afternoon after release clause triggered yesterday for £20m to Burnley. ?? #NUFC
Ekitike deal still complicated – but Newcastle are working to sign one more striker.

Comment #99If he is already up north for a medical today, could be announced as early as this afternoon or this evening. Fingers crossed. Either way I’m sure it’ll be in time for Watford. Wondering if Yasir coming to the game on Saturday kind of have a nod and go ahead for the club to do what’s necessary. Be interesting to see if we get another one in fairly quick after Wood.

Comment #101£20m may be on the high side for Wood but it’s a predetermined release clause and they can’t revalue him out of contention.
It’s the way to go in the next couple of weeks.
All you players with a release clause wanting to be part of the renaissance raise your hand. Take who we need.
Sorted.

Pretty sure it won’t do, I’m sure there’s been cases where injured players have been signed. Medicals are more to find out if there’s any underlying issues I thought? Like heart problems or if they pick up something they think is too big a gamble, like a sign of knee problems down the line.
Could be wrong on that but seem to remember reading/seeing something explain it before.

Yes, CL is important for the players…and the club.
I remember the time we lost to Partizan Belgrade on penalities in the qualifier. Somewhere I feel that set off a chain reaction of bad decisions.
Little chance of getting Schick I agree.
Fingers crossed Woods groin injury isnt too bad and that he passes his medical and can start Saturday.

Comment #110I think Wood is a brilliant signing. Wood may not be as prolific as Wilson but I think he’s a better target man and certainly holds the ball up better. He is exactly what we need at the moment – an experienced Premiership striker who will lead the line and provide a focal point up front. Yes we’ve probably paid over the odds for him but we always knew we would have to in January and frankly who cares if he gets the job done!

Comment #120No nonsense decent ball playing CB next please, £12M for Rob Holding and it’s another step closer to solidifying us and also shows the likes of Lille we won’t be shoved in to a corner. A Rob Holding type still allows you to bring in a big name while providing excellent bench cover when the time comes.
