News tonight from various sources, including here, that Chris Wood is on his way to Newcastle to undergo a medical and sign along the dotted line.
Sky Sports is reporting Newcastle have triggered the New Zealander’s release clause in his contract, thought to be in the region of £20M.
And it’s interesting that Keith Downie is reporting Burnley didn’t think the Magpies would trigger Wood’s release clause since the release figure is so high:
Burnley were aware of Chris Wood’s release clause but didn’t think Newcastle would trigger it. They thought it was too high. Clarets angry that Wood would leave to a relegation rival. His Burnley contract was up next year #NUFC https://t.co/NinNfAlMA4

That’s what rich and ambitious owners can do, and we just had to get a striker in for the Watford game on Saturday, to have a decent chance of winning.
And we cannot think Burnley manager Sean Dyche is too happy either, but he has said a few times it’s not his decision when players are sold.
And we noticed on Saturday that we hardly won any high balls in the penalty box against Cambridge United on Saturday, so a big tall striker is a great acquisition for us.
He can get on the end of those perfect crosses from new signing Kieran Trippier.
And a coincidence – Chris Woods’ very first club was Cambridge FC, based in Cambridge, New Zealand.
So while the fee seems high we haven’t got a lot of time to get new players in, and in any case, the big, tall, and powerful Woods should link up well with Callum Wilson, when he is fit again.
We also believe a younger, less experienced striker could well be signed in this window – maybe Reims’ 19-year-old French striker Hugo Ekitike.
This is a signing we needed, and we are sure Newcastle fans will be welcoming the big man to Newcastle tomorrow – he can score the priceless goals that can keep us up this season.

Comment #201As I said on Sunday, Wood & Tarkowski in for us would be ideal.
Play Ritchie left wing in front of left back Dummet.
Then great crosses from both Ritchie & Trips.
Just what we need to grab some much needed points.
He is a proven goal scorer in a poor Burnley team.

Correct Bob, Wood is exactly what we need right now, has loads of premier league experience, is a big unit who will bully defenders and hold the ball up with his physicality and create chances for other players, is excellent in the air which will be very useful in both boxes, is a real warrior, and last but not least can score goals, as far as iam concerned another great signing mate.

Comment #204Macas – lots of people complaining about the absolute rubbish from journos linking us to anyone, even if totally made up for hits and clicks. I’m definitely in that camp too. Interested in genuine links but not the garbage.
Each to their own though. Unlike some (not you), I don’t have to resort to insults to get my opinion across…

Comment #205If anyone was looking for a comparison:
Wood – From 2017 to 2022: 54 Goals – 8 Assists
Wilson – From 2017 to 2022: 52 Goals – 18 Assists
Wood only turned 30 in December, Wilson is 30 next month, so virtually same age.

Comment #206I love old fashioned center forwards, in the Shearer mould, not that he’s as good as him. But he’s strong enjoys a battle, good header of the ball, plus he’s been in a few relagation battles so knows what to expect.

Comment #208See Gary Lineker giving his opinion it it too, claiming it’s overpriced and bad recruitment. Does feel like everyone just wants a reason to have a go at us over anything. Can’t wait for a few years time where they’re suddenly u-turning, talking about how well the owners have done, how well they’ve managed us and trying to be all complimentary to be on our good books.
Take notes of who’s trying to kick us at every opportunity, don’t let them come grovelling back in a year or two. F*** em. No need to be so negative towards a football club and it’s fans that have been through ownership hell for 14 years.

Comment #215Adamn_92 – definitely overpriced but necessary recruitment it seems. Worth doing if it helps us get 3 points on Saturday. Could still probably sell him to a promoted team for £15m this summer if we get better players in.

Comment #217Lot’s of people turning their noses up at Tarkowski, W Ham have apparently bid £12M for him and they’re aiming for CL, yet he’s not good enough for us?

Comment #218Apparently Wood has been poor so far this season, let’s hope all he needs is a new challenge and Howe can have the same effect on him as he has with Joelinton.

Comment #222Got some of my cockney mates from down here texting me asking wtf are our owners doing going for woods. They just don’t get it do they. I cannot even be arsed to explain myself. Them who laugh last laugh the loudest as they say. Our time is not far away, hopefully get safe this season then properly plan in the summer. HWTL!!!

Comment #225Good signing! Isn’t 20mil the minimum rate for any striker nowadays? Unbelievable that people are criticizing ownership for paying too much.
I was always scared watching wood go against our defenders. He constantly won his matchups against us. If he brings that to our team then we are much better off.
Can’t wait to see him and Wilson in a 442.
