Newcastle’s Dual Mission Now Half-Accomplished With Wood’s Imminent Arrival

With Crystal Palace at Brighton scheduled for Friday night, Newcastle must have Chris Wood registered by noon tomorrow for him to be eligible for Watford. All indicators point to that not being an issue as he is presently undergoing his medical.

The Magpies have moved quickly to nab the 30-year-old from relegation rivals Burnley. If Wood can hit the ground running, his goals could be the difference between survival and relegation.

This marks the second breakthrough in what has been a window of toil. Newcastle are struggling to bring in any of their center-back targets with moves for Sven Botman, Diego Carlos, and Benoit Badiashile hitting stumbling blocks.

A few alternative targets in Feyenoord’s Marcos Senesi and Torino’s Gleison Bremer were linked on Tuesday. However, a report from Italy claims Torino are close to agreeing on an extension with Bremer which would significantly raise the 24-year-old’s price tag.

Senesi, who partnered with Fabrizio Coloccini at San Lorenzo, would cost around £18m according to Sport Witness, who cites numerous Dutch reports about our interest in the Argentine.

A popular option could be Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic. The imposing Serb was reportedly offered our way recently. Fiorentina are hoping to cash in before the 24-year-old’s value sinks due to his contract expiring in 18 months.

Newcastle set out to add a striker and a center-half this week. The mission is partly accomplished with hopes practically vanquished that a defender can be brought on board in the next few days.

Newcastle are also set to miss out on Everton left-back Lucas Digne. Aston Villa have reportedly reached an agreement on a permanent transfer for the 28-year-old. It doesn’t appear he was open to a move to Newcastle.

Once Wood is signed, the focus will be fully on Saturday’s six-pointer against Watford. Then early next week Newcastle must make inroads on a center-back. There are numerous targets but sealing a deal has proven a very difficult task.

    Kets,

‘..Why are we targeting players in their 30’s?’

I suspect it’s because younger players are more concerned about their career and their future prospects which given our current precarious position in the league would require a great leap of faith and risk to jump ship.

Older players don’t necessarily have those concerns. They may have an eye to the future without a football wage.

Just been having a browse who runs CAA Base, whom represent our 2 new guys as agents, trying to work out if there is any ex-player presence there? The only one that leapt out at me was our loanee whilst in the Champo, ‘One Size’ himself, Fitz Hall. Couldn’t spot any other names that were leaping out at me.

Rule U.23. in the Premier League Handbook states: “Subject to the provisions of Rule V.1, the deadline for receipt by the Board of all duly completed documents required by these Rules to effect the registration of a Player shall be 12 noon on the last Working Day before the date of the first League Match in which the Club making the application intends him to play, save that the international transfer certificate and evidence of eligibility to take up employment in the United Kingdom (in both cases if applicable) may be provided thereafter (but must be provided before the Player is eligible to play for a Club in a League Match).”

With Brighton and Crystal Palace playing on Friday night (8pm kick-off), some have interpreted the rule as the last working day before this week’s round of fixtures – which would mean the player would have to be registered by noon on Thursday.

But this is not the case, as the Premier League have clarified.

A Premier League spokesperson told The Gazette: “Rule U.23. is specific only to the team itself wishing to register a player, it doesn’t take into account any other team’s fixtures or the match round in which they will next play.”

That means Newcastle are able to register new signings up until noon on Friday, January 14 in order for them to play against Watford on Saturday.

    From previous;

Bob – exactly. I think our owners have one eye on the championship. The buys help us now and if we go down. I also believe we should sign some young promising talent like Botman and Ekitike to have that touch of class now in case we go down and we struggle to attract that calibre of player down there. We get them in now and can help us survive while building for the future.

    Zele,
I don’t think we’re specifically targeting players in their 30’s. We need short term fixes given our situation and both signings have been available and we’re prepared to pay it. A longer term strategy is where a DoF will come in to play and why I didn’t think getting one in was of paramount importance.

    Regarding wood
It maybe that he’s asked to leave as opposed to there being a release clause or the club wanting to sell, gave up his option for a signing on fee

I’m assuming because Ekitike is only 19 that he wouldn’t take up a space in the 25 man squad?

Any other fans having a dig over Wood is borne from jealously, not jealous over wanting Chris Wood in their own team, although a good few teams would, it’s jealously knowing we can spend £20M on a 30 year old striker because we need him by Saturday.

Neil, as Tom has pointed out, we have 1 x day more than you think to get someone in.

We have until midday Friday to register new players for this weekend because we play on Saturday- the Friday games are irrelevant to our situation.

Good point actually,if this had been last year they’d happy if we signed him coz that would be it for the whole transfer window…no more business at Newcastle…then take the piss saying we only spent 20m in the window!….cant win

Anyone seen the footage of Eriksen training? It’s only 3 seconds long and him braying a dead ball into the top bins. If he’s fully recovered I would piggy back him to the toon. Massive risk though.

Can we put a £12M bid in for Targett now or shall we try and get through until the summer and go for someone better.

Any fans worried about us playing a more direct style of play with Wood than the more attractive style we’ve seen under Howe should remember this…

That more attractive style has got us ONE win.

I couldn’t give two figs what style we play, how boring and defensive we are, and how little possession we have…

As long as we get the points to escape relegation.

Watford, for me, is a big test of Howe as a manager.

If he plays on the front foot and we concede more daft goals from breaks it won’t go down well with me. Trippier and Wood don’t address our weakness in CM or CB in defending against breaks and pushing forward has left us wide open since the style was changed.

In ASM, Miggy and Murphy we’ve go the pace to play a holding and break game, especially away from home.

Rafa when he way here played to the strengths and, just as importantly, the limitations of the players he had. It wasn’t pretty but I always felt confident he would keep us up.

Howe needs to show on Saturday that he can set the team up to maximise the chance to win, and not be bothered about trying to teach some of our old and limited players new tricks.

    BSIB,
The style of play should be the very least of our worries, I’m not sure if the Leeds team he played in the Championship were hoofball specialists, I’m not sure if New Zealand are either where he has a 1 in 2 record.

    @ Bills Son Is Back

I believe rafa set a precedent in playing style based on derisory resources made available by Ashley that is proving very hard to rid the club of. And that was compounded by Bruce.

    Bills

‘That more attractive style has got us ONE win.’

That doesn’t really tell the whole picture. Before Howe arrived we weren’t playing the ‘attractive style’ and hadn’t won any games. Howe arrived and has us playing differently and got us our first win. So its hard to say that the ‘attractive style’ is responsible for us only having one win to our name.

I agree with the rest though, I don’t mind too much if we play super fancy intricate football or go more direct sometimes so long as we get the points to stay up this season. That’s all this season is about now and a proper rebuild can start when safety is assured.

Really pleased with the signings so far (if Wood is completed). Just what we need at the moment to try and stay up.
No real rationale to it, but I wasn’t keen on Coutinho signing. Never been as big fan of his, though admittedly have never watched much of him, even for Liverpool, but it seemed all he ever tried to do was score curlers from the left side of the penalty area. He might rip it up with Villa but just had a gut feeling that he wasn’t what we needed.

Doesn’t really matter how old a player is, if he’s good enough then let’s sign him.

Given the chance I’d sign Modric and Viera (Portland) in a flash, both around 35.

Wood is not just some brutish lump up top. He actually has nice feet and brings others into play really well.

He scores quite a lot of technical finishes with both feet.

Don’t suppose many people have watched a lot of Burnley so are just assuming what he is.
