Newcastle Linked With Promising Bundesliga Midfielder – One To Watch For The Summer?

Newcastle have been linked with an interest in RB Leipzig’s highly-rated midfielder Amadou Haidara. According to The Mail, Newcastle are pondering an approach for the 23-year-old this month.

However, any move would be more practical in the summer when his £33m release clause becomes active. The report claims it could take up to £80m to pry him from Leipzig this month, which seems very unlikely. He also just signed a new contract last May.

Haidara is currently away with Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations so wouldn’t be available until next month. Midfield has taken a back seat in this window with the pressing need for a center-back and striker.

Newcastle have added right-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid and will soon confirm the signing of Chris Wood from Burnley. The duo will have cost around £37m which is not bad considering their vast Premier League experience.

Much of Newcastle’s remaining budget will be focused on a young striker and two center-backs. While a left-back and midfielder are on the agenda, Newcastle may wait until other areas are addressed.

Reims’ teenage sensation Hugo Ekitike is currently on the radar with negotiations ongoing. There are a number of center-backs that Newcastle are working to land. Unfortunately, the pursuit of top target Sven Botman has been blocked by Lille.

Haidara could be one to watch should Newcastle survive this campaign. His release clause will be very reasonable this summer. However, considering the need in other areas of the pitch, it seems improbable that Newcastle will spend what it takes to land the midfielder this month.

Don’t forget Norwich play tonight. Be interesting to see if Cantwell starts or is in the squad, if he is it’ll be interesting to see his reaction at full time.

I like Kets, apart from the odd inappropriate accusation on someones personality, his comments give the blog some quirkiness. I also loved Santon an all. I know most didnt mind. Good kid Santon.

check – I like Kets too. You’re right that there was 1 recent incident that was not quite appropriate but mostly the posts are entertaining and harmless.

I’d have Mbabu, Merino, Abeid, Santon, Thauvin, Slimani and Diame back. All better than what we’ve got.

I think Holding can play right back too? Could be useful if we don’t have Lewis fit as Trippier can also play on the left.

I’d love to see a really top centre back signed but I’d take Holding if not.

Chris Wood and I share a birthday (not the same year though, unfortunately for me) so he just became ten times better in my eyes. Get the lad in! 🙂

Didn’t Burnley get taken over by using the club’s cash reserves to pay the previous owners and financed so that they were in effect £90m in debt when the deal was completed (as opposed to £40m in reserves)?

Add to that that their new owners look at players through the moneyball technique and the fact they’ve sold a player they probably think is worth £10m for over double that AND got his wages off the books, makes it a decent deal for them too.

Just gotta hope he can whack a few goals in for us in the coming months, then it’ll be money really well spent.

Santon was a good footballer. Should never have been sold. Miles better than Paul Dummett. I rated Willems too.

    Happy 50th.

As a birthday present I’ll offer for the last time to bury the hatchet as long as you never again put my name and Ashley in the same post.

Let’s get back to the craic we had years ago.

I’m surprised that all our center back chasing so far appears to be buying outright. I’d be delighted if we can sign a decent center half on a permanent, but might be worth seeing if any decent center halfs are out of favour at their club recently and available to loan. Could always loan a center half with an option to buy at the end.

You said that you could see Fitz Hall as the only ex-Toon player on their books at CAA Base Ltd, but they also have Muto, Danny Rose and Jetro Willems.

Peter @75 – it was actually David Craig’s in-laws who lived in your street so close but no cigar 😀
Kets – when will you realise that Santon was NOT a good fullback – he played on the wrong side and was OK going forward but could not defend for toffee!

Santon was a superb athlete, good footballer and technically gifted.

    But…

A lousy defender and a bottler of aerial challenges.

He was also a right footed left back – if there is one position on the field where you need to be on your favoured foot it’s at full back. Very few players can tackle well on their weaker foot and therefore show wingers onto their favoured foot – in Santon’s case that meant showing them inside instead of outside.

We conceded plenty of goals where Santon was partly or fully at fault.

Nah, Santon and Bernard were the best left-backs we’ve ever had at the club.
