Newcastle Go After Top Central Midfielder – Challenge Red Devils

The Mail are reporting today that Newcastle United are interested in signing Leipzig central midfielder Amadou Haidara.

The 23-year-old is rated very highly and Manchester United have him as a target, so it may be difficult the youngster to join Newcastle.

He joined Leipzig back in 2019 from Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, and he has so far played 101 games for the German club, with 10 goals and 6 assists.

Haidara is reckoned to be one of the best up-and-coming footballers in world football.

He would not be available in January since he is currently away on International duty with Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Haidara has let people know that Manchester United were his favorite club as a boy, so if there is a decent offer from the Red Devils, it’s difficult to see how Newcastle can get this one over the line.

The very fact Newcastle are trying, shows the level of ambition of our new owners.

It’s been reported he has a £33M release clause in his contract, and it seems the only way Newcastle can beat out the Red Devils is by outbidding them and then persuading the player to come to Newcastle, the richest club in the world.

That’s even though at the moment, we are still second-bottom of the Premier League.

We will keep our eye on this one, and we do have all month to sign the player, but as Neil points out – the summer may be a more likely timeframe to bring him in.

What do you think about this?

You said that you could see Fitz Hall as the only ex-Toon player on their books at CAA Base Ltd, but they also have Muto, Danny Rose and Jetro Willems.

I’m surprised to hear you’d have Yedlin back and that he’s better than what we already have. You never mentioned that before 🙂

    Good morning Dr Harrison,

I think this lad’s release clause isn’t active until the summer. We’d have to pay a fair bit more in this transfer window to pry him away. I’d definitely take him though, at a reasonable price anyway.

I think it’s time we stopped referencing ourselves as the richest footy club in the world. Only a small % of the PIFs wealth will be directed our way. Yes, still a sizeable fund but let’s not get carried away and stay humble. We just want to see our owners care for the club, make sensible decisions and strive to deliver year on year improvement. That will do for me.

Why is a CB so urgent? Am I missing something? Are we openly saying our captain ain’t good enough or that his worthy (better, if you ask me) partner, whom he’s keeping out, can’t see us through?

Apart from the others who can play there? I know we’ve conceded a lot of goals. It comes with the territory, when you’re defending and the other guy is attacking, it happens.

I’m not saying they’re world beaters, by all means replace them, but we need a top midfielder or two before that.

Even a goalkeeper is more urgent. (PS. I don’t understand why we haven’t brought in Darlow again, what must Dubravka do to lose his place?)

And a CF. Although with Wood maybe that’s it for now in that area. Always liked this player. Puts himself about, scores, experienced. A good addition, even if we (look away kids) go down. But he isn’t the future. He’s a rugged Burnley type player, which is exactly what we need right now.

    Agree about Darlow.
Dropped as soon as he made one mistake, but Dubs hasn’t had a good game for a long while. So hesitant for the Cambridge goal. Timid. Should have thrown his body onto the ball. Not thinking!

We aren`t the only club who have been targeted by the media when wealthy owners buy a club, i remember Citeh getting pelters for a good few year after the Sheik coughed up his dough.
Take it on the chin lads n lasses, it will all be worth it in the long run, just ask the Citeh fans.

Does all the coverage of a new CB all over the manor motivate or de-motivate Lascelles?

I’m of the opinion that if you put a very very good CB beside him, he will perform.

Whenever a club becomes major news (as we are now), there will be a lot of media attention. For many these days, it doesn’t matter if the article/post they write is true or whether it’s positive/negative about the club, if it generates hits/clicks/likes/comments etc. then they’ve done their job.

Agree with the above, it’s par for the course. Gotta ignore it or roll with it.

    O
Like I said before, I think he’s alright, a good shot stopper too, as is Darlow. But he has seemed nervous since he came back and that translates to mistakes. Yes, he should’ve been all over that vs Cambridge.

Darlow’s “mistake”, if I recall, was when he was beaten on the inside post. But that was a deflection.

Is it true Wood caught the train to town last night for his med,?
Seems odd that, he hasn`t been banned from driving by any chance ha.

I wasn`t keen on the idea of Wood joining the club, and tbh i`m still a bit underwhelmed by his signing but, i do know right now he is what we need for this fight.
If his goals are the difference between safety and relegation then he`ll do for me.
He is a damn good professional, we don`t want prima donna`s at the club, and who knows, maybe his professionalism will rub off on a few of the younguns.. i.e. Stephenson and White, which will only help their progress.

I actually think if we got the left back and defensive midfielder situation sorted it would massively help our centre backs

Even if we get Botman or prime Maldini if they have Richie at left back and Shelvey not tracking late runners into the box they are going to be under supreme pressure not to concede

We concede so many goals from cut backs so many preventable goals which a defensive midfielder who was switched on would just come and intercept that little pass and set us away on the counter

To maintain a balance in media reporting they should no longer refer to the second club in Manchester either by it’s given name or nickname, instead ‘the yankees’ might cover it.

    Cyprus,

I think the mistake people are referring to with Darlow is the Toney goal vs Brentford. To be fair, from memory he was at least partially at fault for all 3 of their goals that day.

His head goes when he knows Dubravka is near to full fitness, he’s solid as a rock when he knows he’s guaranteed a start. Same happened the season before.

But agree Dubravka has lost it in the last few seasons. He’s not the same player we signed on loan and a new keeper for me would be really good. Especially if that keeper is Henderson.

The centre backs are appalling though bar one and no matter how we feel about Fernandes he’s out of favour for some reason and currently injured for an indeterminate amount of time anyway. Lascelles can be good with a solid partner, but he’s not had that lately.

Seriously mate, it’s apparent to a blind man that we need new centre halves. Lascelles has been way off the pace and Clarke should never wear the Newcastle United shirt again. Fernandez isn’t fancied for whatever reason and Schaar has been a lost cause since Rafa left. Dummett is a relegation standard centre half too.

I agree that we need midfield reinforcements but CB is absolutely imperative, and infinitely moreso than a GK in this window.

Quite happy with Wood. Think he’ll do well and once again reach his 10-15 PL goals a season by getting 7-10 injuries permitting, in the remaining fixtures.

Can see him getting a couple at weekend and the pundits and critics looking stupid.

Rather get him a couple of years ago, but still should have 2 or 3 productive years in him. Looks like he keeps himself in top shape.

Some people would be loving it if he were Mitrovic. Similar players, just Wood is smarter and has a better character.

If the worst happens, him and Wilson will absolutely blow away the Chmapionship with ease.

    Mid fielder, yes please!

All our problems begin and end there…
We have zero control in midfield, we can win the ball but we don’t know what to do with it from then on. Our possession numbers, for years, prove it…surely!?!
    We need a hub!

Going to be critical if our goalkeeping coaches.
When Dubravka came the Toon – he was brilliant against Man Utd on his home debut – he commanded his six yard box – came caught punched the ball
Now seems to be stuck on his line -,same happened to Given and Harper tended to stay on the line when the ball was crossed into the box -,low or high

    Charlie,

My problem with him is his tendency to flap. He seems to get caught in two minds when a decision is needed. He will almost always get caught between catch and punch and it will inevitably end up with the opposition as our defence is so poor. Still great at reaction saves, but that’s about it.

Dubravka and Darlow look like the confidence has been knocked out of them a few years of constant shots in games must take its toll

Only have to look at Karius from Liverpool he made that Champions league error and is currently at Liverpool without a future confidence shot

Would be great if we got Henderson in he was the difference for Sheffield United staying up when he went they started conceding goals that he was stopping

Why don’t some of you lot trust ‘The project’, you have waited since the 1950s for success and when it is being laid on your table, squabble about it’s validity?
Have some faith if you do not understand the reasoning behind decisions.
