Sky Sports are reporting this morning that Newcastle are still in talks with Reims about their talented 19-year-end striker Hugo Ekitike.
And the good news is that Ekitike is keen to join Newcastle this month.
The urgency of getting a striker in has quickly diminished, with Burnley’s 30-year-old Chris Wood joining Newcastle for around £25M today – said to be the release fee in his contract.
But it may be even less than that.
Sky Sports report that Newcastle and Reims are getting very close to a deal for Ekitike and both clubs want to do the deal this month.
The latest is that Newcastle want to pay £22.5M upfront and then £2.5M in potential add-ons based on performance for the impressive young Ekitike, who has scored 8 goals in 18 games in Ligue 1 this season.
Newcastle also want to give Ekitike a five-year contract, and you have got to believe his wages will be a lot more than what he’s getting at the French club.
Here’s a piece from Sky Sports News’ correspondent Dharmesh Sheth:
“Talks are still ongoing between the two clubs. There’s still a will to get this deal done. It’s worth around €30M (£25M) – that’s €27M (£22.5M) upfront, with add-ons making it around €30M.”
“I’ve also been given a few details about the payment structure. It would be spread – like a lot of transfers are – across the proposed five-year contract.”
“As it stands there’s still a small gap in the valuation between what Newcastle want to pay and what Reims want.”
“Significantly, the player does want to come to Newcastle.”
This looks very promising, and it’s not an urgent signing as long as we can get it done this month.
But on the other hand, if we are that close – do the deal and get him in – it will add to the momentum and the fact that players are willing to join the newly rich Newcastle this month.
What we do need is a new center-back for Saturday’s game, but that’s now looking doubtful, with any new player needing to be registered tomorrow by noon to be able to play against Watford.
What do you think?

Comment #41Etikite just needs feeding up a bit and some fitness conditioning and body building in the amazing but yet to be built state of the art Training complex, coming to a site somewhere north of the city soon.

Comment #47Etikite would ideally be a signing for the future. But if he comes in and contributes this season too, that’s great!
I would love to see us back to signing promising young players who can grow with the club and potentially become fantastic. Not that we’ve had a huge amount of success in that area in the past mind you…

Comment #48Chris Wood’s just broken his leg in training. What a disaster. Going to need at least 2 more strikers brought in now. Would go for Aubameyang and Martial on loan.

Comment #53Wasn’t mad on this deal before the Wood signing as thought there’d be too much expectation put on him. Now we have another solid option I’m keen to see how’d he’d do for us.
Still eagerly looking for news on a central defensive midfielder. Our current crop in there aren’t up to it.

Not convinced by DVDB – he has never shown any form in the Premier League; have a feeling he’s not going to make it anywhere outside of the Ajax style of play, and NUFC are not that kind of team.

What position would you play him? Is he really proven for the EPL?
With Trippier and Wood we’ve got players who were playing regularly, so are football ready for a regular 90 minutes. Not sure DVDB could play 90 minutes on a regular basis from day 1, due to lack of football.

Comment #65In reality De Beek looks as much use as Willock for us
Every time he plays for Man Utd he looks terrible they bought a dud from Ajax plenty of teams have done it they produce players who look great for them but struggle when moving to other leagues and tactics

Comment #72Looks like the Newcastle Cup started in FPL, although I got a bye in the last gameweek.
I don’t think I’m in the blog league but will be interesting if I draw any of you in the next gameweek. Still, there will be a lot of people on FPL who are in the Newcastle league and cup!

Comment #73DVDB has class for sure. It’s weird that Man Utd can’t get the beat out of him but possible that he doesn’t fit in with the team tactics or maybe he’s just not right for the PL. Even possible he’s struggling with injury or illness.
He’s a player I’d be very happy if we sign but leaving to Howe and the rest of the recruitment team to decide if he’s right for us.

Looks like I’ll have to use my wildcard or free hit this week. Got 3 at Afcon and 3 out injured plus a keeper and defender from Brentford who face Liverpool and Manure.
